Men's Lacrosse: 2020 in Review

Don't want to steal the kids thunder but I heard we got a really good middie/attack transfer. Checked out the kids tape. He's legit.

Somewhat off topic but Hopkins just let Dave Pietramala go.

18 NCAA appearances in 20 years isn't bad but 2015 was the last final four so a bit of a downward trend for them.

This was expected. He had to have a heroic season to get another contract. Haven't heard any names but one I'd keep an eye on is Richmond's coach.

Interesting op ed by Mike Preston in the Baltimore Sun. Thinks an otherwise D3 school like Hopkins put themselves at a real recruiting disadvantage by joining the Big 10.

Btw Cali - Do you remember a Sun sports writer who covered the Colts and Maryland basketball named Clark Judge. Went to college with him. 2 years ahead of me. Was good for Hopkins lax playoff tickets in the early 80's.

Sorry, I don't.

I was having this conversation today. Hopkins is in a tough spot. Over time, they are going to have to invest a lot to compete, and those funds are going to have to come from the school and alums. They have their own tv contract which is probably ending, and they draw well, but they don't get B1G tv distribution outside of some nominal amount from airing network games. As B1G teams are continue to invest in the sport, which every one of them is, alums of the school are going to have to go deeper and deeper. Now, they have very wealthy lax alums. I know a couple of them (one is a billionaire). But how willing over time will they be to continuously fund a program that is up against the B1G rev machine. Time will tell but the inherent advantages Hopkins used to have are long gone. After our facility is done, they will have the worst facilities in the conference. Unthinkable 10 years ago.

Hope guys like Charlambides (sp?) come back - but this season started horrible. Would been heard to follow. Feel horrible for the guys though.

Hoping for success recruiting at the x and another year of Brecht’s staff together get things clicking.

I think things were starting to click a bit. You hate to put it on one spot but reasonable at the x and we look at lot different. Some potential transfers being looked at and a freshman coming in with credentials. Let’s hope the guys returning come back better and fitter.

I wouldn't expect many guys that were truly out of eligibility to be back to use the awarded extra year...again, when you look at the season being halted essentially two months before graduation, guys have jobs lined up, or they are just ready to get on with the next step in life...unless you had no job lined up, and really had no plan in place yet, then yes, coming back make sense...

The current juniors are in a much better situation to evaluate and make a sound decision on this...they have time to meet with the staff, discuss roles for next year and "if" they take an extra year, etc...they also have to to assess where they are academically, research grad programs, meet with the team advisor, and then sit down with their parents and discuss the pros and cons of taking the "extra" year...and frankly that extra year might be a grad transfer at another school that has a program they want to get a masters in...it might not be...but my commentary is that the current seniors have very little time to pivot...some are already one foot out the door...while the Juniors now have time right now to evaluate all facets of this decision and make a sound one...I'm living this right now with my son...so I know

Looking ahead, as Cali notes, I do think this team can progress and bounce back...I may be one of only a few, but I still liked our chances in the Big Ten regular season...I felt we would have made the BTT...I know that's not the ultimate goal, but it would have been a small positive...

We HAVE to solve the issue at the FO-X...it's killing us...and yes, part of that is wing play, but if you broke it down, it's 70% on the execution at the dot, and 30% wing issues....a guy that can command better control in the "dot" battle will make the wing play better...markedly...

The off season will give kids time to reflect and re-purpose...some guys were coming on hard in new roles, some young guys were looking solid...we will lose a few pieces, but as Cali points out, we will backfill with some talent...the kids will work hard in the off season...and the staff needs to really reflect as well about things and find out if they were truly pulling the right levers, etc...it's on both parts...staff and young men.

Hope everyone is healthy and well

Thanks for the insight Golfer. It is always great to read first hand details about the team and how they are fairing day to day.

Well, I don't think I'm offering too much but thanks for the note...

The team has multiple meetings every week via zoom meetings, they all seem engaged, and focus IMO is on three things...

Academics - making sure the guys are taking care of the classroom
Health - All the guys are given workout plans and they are working out at home
Team - Ocassonally I over hear the calls from the other room...they all seem light and lots of laughter

I would add that the coaches are calling individual guys, they're having phone meetings, talking about all of the above...and plans for next year, etc...

Look, like all of us, this not an ideal situation...but the staff is engaged, the guys are talking almost daily, so while everyone is isolated and far from campus...they are still actively together (via technology) almost everyday...

Tomorrow should be a good day for the kids. RU great Jules Heningburg will be addressing the team.

I think your top point is spot on, I have heard from many coaches and players who have said that many kids are simply ready to move on kids have good jobs waiting for them that may not be there in a year. Many don't want to sacrifice that job so they can pay to go to school for another year and I am not sure that they can just GO to grad school I think there is an application process. Sounds like schools are looking at the economic impact of all of this and realizing that they can not add scholarship money for all of the sports that had been canceled. This means that the coaches will be able to keep a small number of players or add them from the Portal. Some schools are at or over there roster limit and adding players would force those staffs' to cut existing kids in the program. Just look at how few kids have come out and said they are coming back.

as it comes to face-offs's I will say that I am pretty sure we have a shot at adding one from the total, the FOGO from UPenn Gallagher almost came to Rutgers from Hofstra originally and I have to imagine that they are on the phone with him. There may also be a few others that might be available, but we also need to give them some help.

I hope all of you are staying safe and I am holding out hope for a season here in NJ

Can't argue anything you've said...

I believe, and this is just my opinion, that each program and each coach will take the extra year on a one by one basis...it sounds harsh, but if the kid fills a need, is a good program kid and can help, that kid probably gets the extra year extended to him...I'm not sure that would ever be the public protocol in these situations...but that is the reality...with that said, the kid can graduate and put his name in the portal and maybe someone wants said kid...see how it plays out

High school season cancelled here...really feel bad for seniors in high school....

Stay healthy and be well...

I sure hope we get something to his season.

Dugenio looking to play very close to home?

I wish, and I think Gallagher is in the portal and Dugenio is not. I am hearing the same as others about the number of kids in the Portal. After the top couple the rest will fill needs. With so many kids in the portal the coaches and teams can be selective.
Remember we still have Ott who will be another further away from his ACL surgery and a freshman coming in, they should be in a better place next year at the X

I was told we were getting a lot of interest from kids in the portal. The key is getting the right kids as transfers. First and foremost, they need to have the right make up to fit in the locker room. Brian needs to figure out if they are Rutgers guys. That's probably not so easy when you don't have a typical recruiting process.

Hofstra has a really good, lock down defender in the portal. I would take a long look at that kid.

Ohio cancelled spring sports - official yesterday.

Think it will be hard for coaches to recruit in this environment.

Recruiting has essentially stopped from what I have heard

Recruiting is very, very strange right now. Most have gone quiet.
