Men's Lacrosse Alumni Game

I went yesterday (did not play) this was the best alumni team I have seen in a while. Field was littered with MLL guys to a point where Mattes who is a great Fogo with the Launch did not take face offs. Yet the current team still won and actually dominated parts prior to the 4th quarter when most freshmen were playing. They held some kids out so some others got a chance to play. The attack looked strong as expected. I thought that the poles looked good in transition although Sikora had just a rocket to the back post. They rotated several middies, they are very athletic as several of the freshman who did not play till later looked impressive athletically. overall a fun day

Why doesnt RU Athletics market these types of games for fans? I had no clue this was going on otherwise I would've attended it instead of watching football get destroyed by OSU. Now Women's lax is doing a sort of round robin today down at Hopkins.

Good to hear, Family. Wish I could have made it back. The momentum seems to continuously grow.

Matt- great question. They do a terrific job of marketing to the alums, which is driven by the Coach Brecht. Hopefully the marketing staff can do the same for the public for these types of events moving forward. I'm sure it would have been exciting to watch. 17-15 would have had some great goals.

Sorry, will try to share more. The team is scrimmaging at UMass on Oct 22nd and the are having an alumni tailgate on Oct 15th. The announced the schedule this weekend and they have added Brown to the home schedule so that's Brown, Maryland, Princeton, Ohio State, Army and Stony Brook as part of the home slate that is pretty nice

That's an awesome home schedule. I'm getting season tix for MLax for the first time...am a season ticket holder for football for 7 years and wrestling for 2 years. When is the Brown match?

That is a great home schedule. It's the year to get season tix if you don't have them already.

What's the goalie situation like as it currently stands, Family?

Sounds like they have all been playing at a high level from what I understand.

On Sunday I thought that Jack Ayre and Liam both looked very good at times. Max is a little banged up and did not play

Thanks, Fam. Looks like the position is being solidified which is one of the few holes we need plug.

For those that didn't see, here are some current team centric highlights. As you can imagine, there was a lot of talent on the alums side, who had some nice goals of their own. Steel sharpening steel, Scarlet style. Gotta love it.

Is faceoff solidified this year? That was a big time weakness last year and our offense would be even more explosive with a top grade face off guy.

I know we brought in one or two guys at that spot, but I am not sure how it is shaking out. Family can speak to it. Below is the alum centric video which I am guessing Coach Brecht got a some fun nature'd ribbing for, for making the initial video all about the current team. You can see there was a very high level of play, especially for an alumni game. Coach Brecht is doing an amazing job bringing the alums together even closer. A few highlights in the faceoff department here. I wouldn't use this a barometer though. Nardella is probably one of the top 5 faceoff guys on the planet right now, as is Mattes. Good for our guys to be able to go against them, though it sounds like Mattes didn't take any. I am sure he passed along some wisdom.

With our offense, if we can get an ace at that spot, it's going to be big trouble for other teams.

If a top face off guy emerges, with our offense...teams are going to need to score 15+ to beat us this spring.

If we can get a high level of play in the goal and win some faceoffs, you are right. Teams might have to score more than that.

The kids have to work really hard to play this style of ball, but it must be really fun to play this way. Recruits are surely paying attention. We are at the forefront, along with a couple of other programs, of the new (which is old) style. Nice to be leading the charge. Big props for to the staff for taking the reigns off and living with what comes with this style. Most coaches just can't give up that control. Good for us, bad for them.

My take on the team is very much like yours if we find a good fogo we could be a very dangerous team. The attack can be special and Connor Murphy looked very good but I still feel like Mullins figures out a way to take the third spot which gives us great depth with Murphy and Scarpello and Verycrusse. The middies are a deep and talented group they bring all four ssdm back and they bring back George, Trasolini, Rose, Tolliver Jordan and the kid from Cranford. I do not see any freshmen breaking that group although they like the Gillespe kid alot. The next to see action may be Cunningham or the transfer from NCC. The defense, which was missing 2 guys from the team that will play also appeared fairly deep as I do not recall seeing freshman until later, the top 2 freshman in that group appear to be Thompson and Nordhausen.
Cali- is right we need to play well in the goal as well remember Max was the starter until he got hurt, but his replacement was KA who was Big East freshman of the year and had played alot. If Max gets hurt of is not ready his replacement has not seen a live shot in a college game.
While this type of offense is fun it is harder to run and teach than you think and your roster need to be deep enough to play 4 ssdm and 6 poles. Almost as big a missing piece will be Sikora who could play the ball and play in transition.

Sikora will definitely be missed, though I like what I am seeing from Pless. Assume that shot in the highlights from Sikora was the one you reference above. What a rip.

Yup,that was it Pless is good but they need to find a guy to spell him some and it could be Bullit or maybe one of the Freshmen.

Hopefully whoever it is has the same ability to go from D to O. Seems Bullett would be the next man up. Groel solidified himself on the close end, but he could easily play that role. Nice to have options. One good thing about having kids from emerging type areas/programs is those kids are so versatile. They do it all, which is a big plus for systems like ours where our style lends itself to being a fully formed lacrosse player. Not a ton of specialists as compared to those slow go programs. Saw Groel more than a couple of times in high school. He did everything for them. Man up, man down, faced off...only thing I didn't see him do was play goalie. At the time I thought lowly of it because I knew he was coming to RU to play D. Little did I know that it would help his game given the style we now play.

I noticed they put a pole in the hands of one of the first year guys from Florida, who was pretty prolific on the offensive end in high school. I am guessing based on the success that Sikora had doing the same, making these types of moves get easier and easier, and in fact, something they see as a big plus.

Playing on D mid on other teams must suck. At Rutgers, as a middie, it's probably the best position. You get to to it all.
