Anyone see the bigger dude wearing the "MIC-MAN" Jersey? Walking around the front of student section and helping get chants started. I think it worked well. You could hear him on tv a bit as well. I wonder if he is a student. Thoughts?

you could hear him on tv (at least in the first half... which was a bit funny)....

Thinking back to freshman year......... it's actually not a bad idea (for the first game at least)...... it can be the first RU game for a lot of folks........

Sounds bush league to me. Back in the day (Graber years) we didn't need the PA guy to tell us when or how to do the R-U chant. Kinda embarrassing that this is necessary. I learned all I needed to know (including the fight song) from fellow students.

back in the day.. there were 14,000 people in the stands.........

The leader can slow down the students response.
that is critical to a good RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
...................................UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
cheer. Without a person to set the pace the students respond too quickly and it first becomes
a UUUUUUUU...RRR cheer, and then becomes an overlapping mess.
It can be even better if they slow it down further.

Yeah, well, PSU used a mic man in front of their student section in the early 90's, and it worked perfectly. I think you might just be naive.

The chant was better on Saturday but hopefully they're able to keep it like this during big games when the student section is packed and full of energy. I can see the chant becoming too fast again in those games.

Other programs uses a "Mic Man" during their games, esp SEC teams. You can hear the ROLL TIDE ROLL, or LETS GO VOLS idk how many times on CBS. This could work.

Maybe it wouldn't be necessary to have a cheer leader if we had cheerleaders. Guess it's too much to ask to have around 50 cheerleaders actually attempt to lead cheers.

Cringeworthy imo. It's ok for the one time before the game, I guess, but not throughout the game.

Mic'd up cheerleaders are used throughout college football. IN stadiums and with fan support much larger and more established than RU's. USC, Tennessee, A&M,Texas, LSU, UGA all have some version of a mic'd up cheer leader. I have no issue with it as long as they lose the countdown to the cheer. NO need to say in 1-2-3 RRRRRRRRRRRR. Just say RRRRRRRRRRR and the crowd will follow.

During the game it's not over the PA. There are four speakers on the field wall which face back towards the student section. It was just so empty and quiet, you could hear it in nearby sections.

It's exactly what we need and he can even improve it even more. I've been saying for years that we need a "Fireman Ed" presence that has control over the students to get it right. If he took the approach of "wait for my signal", he could get a really long, quiet pause out of them.

Clemson has speakers that point towards their student section for their yell leader

Agreed. How the hell were we able to get it right, yet today's students/fans are in such a hurry? Could it be the cheerleaders? Man, that slow RRRRRR......... UUUUUU chant is so much more ominous.

Meh... just don't recall having to be taught something that should be relatively simple to pull off, as if we just started our program yesterday. Idk. Maybe it's the influx of so many new fans in the post-Shea era.

I could live with that. I don't usually sweat the small stuff like this, but you're right. That countdown is so, I don't know... preschool?

Remember the chicken at the RAC? Oh, and the cheesehead guy?

I distinctly remember a mic guy at the freshman orientation game back in 1996. He happened to be a preceptor in a neighboring dorm.

There were also handouts with all our chants printed on them, one page per seat. they quickly became paper airplanes, but they started out as a primer to being a good Rutgers fan.

A yell leader/mic man is fine as long as the students/fans respond well. A bunch of cute cheerleaders strutting around looking good is fine too!
