Michigan becomes first CFB team outfitted by Jordan brand

Can't say I am surprised by this. It seems like Michigan is losing its prestige a little bit. And before people jump all down my throat for saying that let me at least finish my post. I know it isn't the biggest deal, but it is just another "thing" that makes me feel like the Michigan "brand" and "aura" is weakening and they are getting into the headlines for not so important reasons these days. I am aware that Jordan is a very popular brand, but I am kind of getting a whiff of desperation from Michigan where it is no longer relying on it's tradition and winning pedigree (Probably because they haven't been winning much).

Obviously, the brand of your jerseys is a very tiny thing is the grand picture, but IDK it seems like Michigan is trying to gain attention again in other ways other than winning football games these days.

And for whatever reason, I know other big name teams have Jordan brand jerseys, but when I think of Jordan branded jerseys I think of Marquette basketball for some reason... Not the winning-est college football program in history... but hey who knows maybe the recruits will think its cool. I am in my twenties, but that is a light year away from these kids when it comes to what is "cool" and what is not. ( aka whatever they are being brainwashed into thinking is "cool" without them even realizing it, by guys/girls in suits and ties sitting in a marketing meeting, but that is a whole other unrelated topic haha)

More about $ and less about attention. Michigan got this opportunity because they have the Michigan brand and people tune in to watch them play,

Agreed.

When I heard Michigan had signed on with Nike to be their jersey sponsor I immediately assumed they were going with the Nike jerseys. Little did I know they were going with the Jordan brand. Maybe the whole Jordan thing was actually discussed in the actual negotiating meetings for the initial sponsorship deal and that is why Michigan was able to get so much more money because they agreed to go with the Jordan brand rather than the Nike logo.

why the jordan brand still exists is kinda silly. i mean, you would expect the love for the jordan brand to have faded away.

who would have expected todays hs kids to love the jordan brand as much or even more than the kids growing up in the 90s?

i bet if you showed them 10 pictures of random african american basketball players and 1 pic of michael jordan, they wouldnt be able to pick him out.

Yet Air Jordans are everywhere...one of the best marketed and successful brands ever...

UM has long had a brand on their uniform. Is it just the Jordan brand making you feel this way?

It isn't silly. It is great branding and marketing.

This is awesome for Jordan I guess.... but honestly I think its kind of weird seeing a jumpman symbol of a dude holding a basketball on the front of a team's football jersey. Why not atleast debut it for basketball season-------

----ok.. nevermind I get it. The fact that I even thought about it proves that the marketing technique worked

I respect your opinion but completely disagree. Michigan will never lack presitige in your lifetime.
There are hicups in every program at this demanding level.

$169mm reasons for Michigan football and basketball. If Rutgers was getting that revenue I think we would all be happy.

Funny, but I think we agree more than we disagree. I don't think Michigan is lacking in prestige either, it is probably still the most prestigious program in the country.

I'm just saying that it has been "weakening a little bit" and that it seems like they are moving in the wrong direction from a "brand and aura" perspective in the very recent past.

Bring back Bo!

Bo knows football.

Jordan's legacy is talked about so much that even those that haven't watched him play personally have it ingrained in their heads that MJ is the greatest to ever do it.

Kind of wonder if they would have considered outfitting North Carolina if not for the scandal.

Jordan brand will never die. MJ alone made $480 from Nike contract from 2000-2012. Think about what that means for sales numbers.

Huh? Whaaaa?

psst...more Air Jordan's were sold last year than Lebron's, Kobe's and Steph Curry's...

COMBINED.

Air Jordan will go down as one of the top 5 marketing and branding campaigns of all time.

My son is about to turn 8. Has a life size MJ fat head on his wall, about 12 pairs of Jordan's and other than some UA, won't wear any athletic gear that isn't Jordan (and RU). And his friends are the same way.

You're waaaaaayyyyyyy off base.

Then we have the Harbus... it will begin a nationwide tour beginning next week. It is FOX's way of promoting their upcoming college football broadcast season which starts with the Michigan-Utah game.

Media hype....sure.... but the kids love this stuff.
