Mike Piazza

Not a Mets fan but glad Piazza made it in. As said above, best hitting catcher in MLB history.

I always think of Piazza as a California player. Its funny but I see him as a Met the same way I see as Clemens as a Yankee - not by much. Will MP be going in as a Met?

Won't be announced until tomorrow but I would bet my car that he goes in as a Met.

I'm very happy he finally got in. It should have been sooner, but the plaque reads the same no matter how long it takes.

Great hitter, especially for a Catcher. Big fan of his and agree he was one of the best hitting Catchers of all time if not THE best. All around he is up there with Yogi, Johnny Bench, Pudge 1 and Pudge 2, Campy and of course Kid Carter.

Piazza stated in his autobiography he wants to go into the HOF as a Met. He played 7 years with the Mets. More than any team including the Dodgers.

Yankee fan here, glad Piazza got it. Side note- I'm sour on the baseball HOF. How does Jeff Kent not sniff the HOF but Biggio gets in, Jeff Bagwell 71%- sorry great player not a HOF'er. Piazza not getting in last year.

Would love to hear Zappaa's thoughts.

I guess this is a good sign for all the steroid users. Looks like the numbers went up for all the big names.

Mets fan and big Piazza fan and really happy he got in. Some great numbers and meaningful moments. I don't know why Raines has not gotten in yet. Great player hurt by Ricky Henderson.

You know, Bagwell ranks 7th all time in career WAR for 1st basemen. His career WAR is well above the average for HoF 1st basemen (by something like 14 points)

No doubt he goes in as a Met. He did not take being traded by LA well. He hasn't gone back to Dodger Stadium since he retired, despite lots of invites.

Wouldn't be surprised if Tommy Lasorda talks to him and to the Dodgers about honoring him with a Mike Piazza day making peace between them and having him go in as a Dodger .

Don't be sour…HOF is a never ending controversy that makes for good dialogue.
While your at it look up Albert Bell's ten years, also Fred McGriff.
Mr. Berra still has most RBI's, most MVP's and most championships for catchers.

Albert Belle had great numbers but no one liked him.
I know a lot of the voters, a player not getting consideration because he was a bad guy is a myth.
The Pete Rose situation is very difficult for writers, he was a great guy, and the veterans committee will never put him in.

Albert Bell was more than just a bad guy with the press. He was over the top on how he treated them. You don't bite the hand that feeds you. His loss, and I'm sure he'd say he doesn't care about the HOF, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was elected and cried like a baby during his speech, lol.

I'm not a big big baseball fan but I do attend 4 or 5 Mets games each year. It's just too expensive to try and do more. I do have an opinion on the HOF. First off let me say congratulations to Mike Piazza. However, until the following players make it into the Baseball Hall of Fame I seriously question the process.

1. Pete Rose
2. Dwight Gooden
3. Rafael Palmeiro
4. Fred McGriff

Players don't get to choose anymore after Boggs and Winfield got paid for their choices.

The percentage went up, but not the number of votes. They removed over 100 voters from last year, people who haven't been baseball writers for 10+ years.

Bonds for example went from 202 votes last year to 195 this year. Clemens from 206 to 199.

They're not getting in.

Seen a USA Today article that said he would like to go in as a Met, but you're right about it not being his choice.

You do realize it is the Hall of Fame that makes this decision, not the player.

Those are some strange candidates in your proclamation
1. Rose broke the rules he knew existed. Then he lied about them. Then he continued to break the rules, lie about it, admit it, etc... He disqualified himself and has no one else to blame.
2. I loved Doc (as a Mets fan) but by 26, he was no longer great. Had a stretch of dominating years, just not enough of them. Do you also put in Fernando, John Tudor, Nomar? How about Dale Murphy (2x MVP)?
3. Massive PED user - completely changed his career.
4. McGriff belongs in the Hall of Very Good. Long, steady career but was he ever considered in the top 2 or 3 1B in his career?

Will never forget the HR he hit in the first game played after 9/11 to win the game. It has to be in the Top 10 greatest moments in baseball history for a regular season game with all the emotion surrounding that game.

My buddy got me press box seats for that game. Unforgettable. Saw Liza Minelli up close... man that lady sweats a lot. Insane atmosphere and the game couldn't have been better.

Agreed-
Don't forget Jack Morris
I loved Trammel and Concepcion
Two guys that if they were around in 40s and early 50s,,,you'd of never heard of Reece and Rizzutto

I would put 1 and 4 in the HOF. No issue if you want to keep Pete Rose out of baseball due to gambling but he should be in the HOF. I read somewhere there is actually more Pete Rose memorabilia in the HOF than any other player (don't know for certain if that is true) so he is actually in the hall; just make it official. McGriffs 490+ homeruns and 280+ BA deserve consideration. As said above, Gooden was only dominant for a short period of time so I would say no. Palmeiro is the poster child for succeeding with PED's so no there as well.

Agree.

And as a Met fan I am happy too but for those complaining about his having to wait...If #8 wasn't a 1st ballot guy IMO neither is Piazza.

I'd say yes to Trammel, but I think Morris' 3.90 ERA may be a little high for HOF (great clutch pitcher though). I would put Raines and Belle in. Raines is probably 2nd best leadoff hitter ever and Belle had a shortened but amazing career. He did play 12 years and averaged > 100RBI/year, went over 125 RBI 4 times, and had a career .933 OPS. He was great for a lot longer than Doc, Fernando, Nomar, etc.

BTW, I think Trammel is a classic veterans committee induction and I think he will get in. Really good player appreciated more by his peers than nerdy statisticians.

Congrats to Piazza and Mets fans.

While talking about those that should be in, don't forget about Jim Edmonds. Better hitter than McGriff, played a more demanding defensive position excellently at his peak and very good for most of his career.

How can you put him in the same category as the best in the game.
The guy was a terrible catcher. In the American league he would have
been a D.H. Calling him one of the greatest catchers is an insult to Yogi,
Campy and the rest. But I don't blame Met fans, they have to come with
someone.

Pitchers who worked with Piazza had much nicer things to say. “He did a lot of things well behind the plate,” Tom Glavine told NJ Advanced Media in 2014. Glavine added:

Yeah, he wasn’t the greatest thrower. That unfortunately translated into people thinking that some of [his] other game wasn’t as good as it was. He called a good game. He received the ball fine. He blocked balls fine. But so often catchers are defined defensively on how well they throw and there’s much more that goes into just being a good defensive catcher than being able to throw.

#5 on this list too:

Read the article. His pitch framing and blocking of pitches more than made up for his poor throwing ability.

Not sure I agree. 100+ voters were purged from the voting process this year, meaning many players received a jump from that.

Must be a Yankee fan. So take that in consideration.
