I know plus minus has flaws, but it has some merit.

In his 4 shifts
enters -7 at 14:32 leaves 9:39 at -9 (-2)
enters -13 at 5:29 leaves 1:03 at -9 (+4)

enters -8 at 16:23 leaves 8:58 at even (+8)
enters -8 at 6:01 finishes game +6 (+14)

The box score paints a bad game.

I like the stat, but in a game where there is a decisive 17-2 run over the final 5 minutes there is a chance a players +/- ratio gets “enhanced” by non corollary circumstances.

His defense and rebounding from the guard spot will be missed next year for sure.

Williams played a big role, not in scoring, but for his defense and rebounding.

Based on this I would assume that the +\- for Thiam isn’t pretty? This is interesting stuff.

Mike had a solid impact on the game, but to me Eugene was really the impact player and his near double double was only part of the story. The minutes he was off the floor we tended to let things slip. Despite his lack of a shot, he makes things happen on both sides of the ball.

Eugene
comes in -7 13:04 leaves -9 9:52 (-2)
comes in -10 4:37 leaves -8 2:38 (+2)

comes in -8 15:29 never comes out +6 (+14)

total +14

I had no idea he played the final 15:29

I mean it's really only a stat for long term use. Runs like this that may or may not have much to do with a single player. It can also correlate to substitution patterns, but over the long haul those factors are lessened.

Irrespective of any stats, I just love Mike's incredible effort and smart play. I only wish his three point shot would start to fall. If that happens, watch out!

Stats will never reflect what Mike means to the team. He's a smart, hard-nosed player who will not be easy to replace.

Ask Desi Rodriguez what he thinks

Plus/minus stats are interesting but limited when evaluating players such a Williams & Thiam who’s primary role/contribution was defense. So lately I’ve been looking at points given up in man-to-man defense.

So with Williams & Thiam mostly guarding him in man, Desi Rodriguez was held to 5 below his 20 pt average, along with a shooting percentage more than 10 worse than his average.

Desi scored 10 on Thiam including 2 threes, and maybe just 2-4 on Williams. They both caused Rodriguez to turn it over at least once. Desi only played 13 minutes in the 2nd half.

Plus, the further “psychological” impacts cannot be quantified with a player like Rodriguez who can drop 19 points in the 1st half alone like he did against Louisville, eventually shooting 12-18 for the game.

Especially if the team & coaching staff were confident prior that they could hold both Rodriguez & Delgado below their scoring averages.

IMO, it’s not an excuse but I do think that both Williams and Thiam struggle on offense more not necessarily by playing better competition but from their primary role of defending the tougher opponent’s best scorer at the 2-3 position.

I think you missed something there...I think he came out for a bit around the 9 min marker simultaneous to SHU pushing the lead back to 9. Further proving the point...

But how many minutes did Williams have with Rodriguez? (Another Limitation of player +|-).

Probably 7-10. And when you look at foul rate, it’s unlikely that those 7-10 minutes could’ve been increased, because Williams picked up 2 quick fouls in 2nd half guarding the much bigger Rodriguez.

Come on the rebounds Mike gets are incredible for his size. He got the rebound on the missed 3 pointer at the end of the Seton Hall game and went to the line to seal the game!! Wish he could make some more 3's but his hustle and determination are going to be really missed next year!!

That rebound was sick, and typical of what Mike brings. If you break a game down into key "moments", i.e., a key play at a crucial time, for which there are no stats, you would have to say Mike has as many of those as anybody.
