"I got a (direct message) from some of the players that are still getting recruited," Mitchell said. "Once I put out that I was looking to go elsewhere, I got a message from a couple of big names, Jersey guys, saying if I were to go (to Rutgers), they would come with me. It was good hearing from some of the younger guys in New Jersey, and hearing them saying if I went there, they would definitely want to come with me."

He and his family already knew Rutgers coach Chris Ash, who recruited his brother, current Arkansas Razorback Damon Mitchell, and also recruited Ahmir out of Egg Harbor City (N.J.) Cedar Creek.

"When I was looking at Michigan and Ohio State, coach Ash was the main one recruiting me at Ohio State," Mitchell said. "I already had a good relationship with him, and he also had a good relationship with my brother when he was getting recruiting by Wisconsin and Arkansas, and coach Ash was recruiting him. Me and coach Ash have a history.

"My heart pulled me toward Rutgers. I thought it was smart to make the decision and go there."

Jesus Christ. If Ash can somehow someway pull us to .500 this season with a sub par Flood roster, proving he is the guy, he'll convince these kids to stay. I truly believe if this happens, we win the B10 in 5yrs.

*Flood screwed us so bad, it will take a miracle, to get to .500

This "sub par Flood roster" comprises young men who will take to the field and play their hearts out for us. C'mon, man. Think. Think. Think before you post such "stuff."

We shall see. Ky Hester said the same thing and couldn't even deliver his brother.

So your saying Ky's brother made up his own mind? Imagine that. It can't hurt to have anyone helping recruit the state but you are not going to get everyone regardless. Even some Ohio and Alabama kids want to leave the state and explore whats out there.

Well i hope that Ash and crew coach them up and they can be successful i life and make the NFL. I want nothing but sucess for every single member of the team.

That doesn't mean we have to lie about the damage that Flood did to this program.

Ash had to hit the reset button.

It will be a miracle if we go .500 this year.

I am hoping for a miracle

Some of you love this narrative, but don't forget to also thank Julie, Mike Rice, the faux abuse scandal and the person who decided to hire Flood. Never look at any of the good Flood did and some of he really good recruits he got, and just keep whining about the bad. Take the hand you are dealt, and face it like a man. Stop whining already.

I think the issue now is depth mostly at certain spots throughout the roster. All the decommits and accordingly reaching on guys that weren't 1-A caliber. That said, those guys have basically been run off by this point - especially with Ash and Parker coming in. So the guys left probably can play a bit, one would think at least.

I actually think Flood (and his assistants) had a decent eye for talent for the most part. I think a lot of that stems from being located where we are. You get to see a lot of guys that maybe get overlooked and seeing them physically in person at camps on campus helps a lot.

Agree with you mostly, but not many guys were run off. Over the years we have done well with transfers, including graduate transfers to fill in gaps. Ash did a nice job of picking up Bailey from Tx and now Mitchell, who he had a previous relationship with to sure up the WR group, and we have several in the incoming class. Just sick of the persistent whining by some here blaming Flood for everything. He's gone, and Ash is a big boy who knows the areas he needs to recruit.

Fudd is now hunting wabbits. Something he can do better than football recruiting.

Just because Flood was a poor HC doesn't mean he recruited poor talent. This team could have more talent than several of you think. Why don't you let them play out the year before you decide they aren't talented. And, regardless of how good Ash may turn out to be as a head coach if this team is so devoid of talent as some of you suggest they will not be a 500 team. No coach wins over a season without talent.

This team has talent. Even with the 11th hour departures of almost the entire defensive backfield last year, we almost beat WSU and MSU. Flood had to go and we are in a much better position with Ash. But please, please do not peddle the narrative that we don't have talent. That's just not true.

Plenty of talent, not a lot of depth. But I'm cautiously optimistic because I expected a bunch of transfers which I did not see. . . and the S & C seem greatly improved.

Your distain for Flood is clouding your vision.
BTN said in their Rutgers review "This is a very, very talented team... Ash did not get a bare cupboard when he arrived here."

I still remember Shea arriving and saying "the cupboard is bare". It did not matter what the "cupboard" looked like.. there are things you just should not say in an effort to temper expectations and give your own career some breathing room.

How about this. ?Thanks for choosing Rutgers Mitch. We are happy to have you. Maybe some of your buds will follow
Maybe not. Their choice. Make us proud.

Flood and staff had a good eye for talent, and there are "under the radar" guys on the team who are better than advertised.

Ash will not be at Rutgers if he finishes 5-4 in the BIG. He could be on his way to the NFL. Hope he can do it this year. The bad news is we could get "flooded" again.

In a sense - both perspectives seem to have some validity - it was not quite a case of Flood being entirely unable to obtain any talent at all - there are many individual bright spots on this team that can legitimately be considered as as part of the Flood era - it just seemed that the Flood era had a serious lack of ability to build a full roster with legitimate consistency and depth - and really struggled with the pursuit of "glamour" prospects
plus - there were many "reaches" taken - too many - and some "reaches" were not potential 'high upside' prospects - too many were "oh if they grow in size & skill they can be a serviceable back-up" - you can't bring in 'reaches' like this ... while reaches can sometimes payoff, they should be "high upside - icing on the cake" - and not a significant component of configuring the 'core'.

Back up a bit. He hasn't coached a game yet as a head coach and you have him in the NFL!! Maybe he would like to finish the job he started before he leaves. Maybe he might just like it here. Let's win today and let the rest play out.

This is not true at all. Im not intentionally shilling for the premium board here but most on there know what happened. The only reason I mention it is because its not on Hester as to why his brother is elsewhere

If he goes 5-4 in conference we should add several years to his current contract...if we compete with those in the top 7-8 in conference Ash won't be running off to the NFL ...

Please, this is far from a talented team, much less a very talented team. We do not possess one WR who can create separation and we also do not have one single lineman who can generate a pass rush.

Hester mentioned he would get numerous NJ players to follow him. Name them. It wasn't just his brother.

Hope this happens...the idea of Rutgers WINNING the B1G/ NC....is a big dream. But no bigger than Rutgers getting into the B1G to begin with.

If we would have had the #1 player in the country, Walker and host of other Michigan (NJ) players (starting with Peppers) who knows where we'd be predicted to finish.

But I think we're finally on the right track....

In Hobbs, Ash / Rutgers I trust!

PS Note to Mitchell: Glad you've now made the right choice....prodigals R welcome!

He may have, but he also had a lot of guys wash out very quickly. There are good players on the team from the 2013 and 2014 recruiting classes, but there aren't nearly enough. If we didn't have 7 guys from the 2012 class still here, 6 starting in the trenches, we would be in really bad shape here.

Anyone still think we have the size speed and talent to compete?

God damn Flood f*cked us over.

Ash needs to be Greg Schiano 2.0 and find a way to get talent back on this roster.
