Now that we’re well into the season and the rotation seems set, I thought it would be interesting to discuss how the transfer-in class has performed thus far. In order of their jersey numbers:

- #3 Sam Stephan (FOGO) - he and freshman Luke Romanek have split the backup FOGO duties. Stephan is 22-56, for just 39%. Good to have an experienced backup, but the percentage is disappointing. Incomplete.

- #4 Mitch Bartolo (A) - 25 goals, 11 assists for 36 points, second on the team in all three categories He has been everything we hoped for, seamlessly replacing Connor Kirst’s production. Huge win here.

- #8 Ronan Jacoby (M) - 22 goals, 5 assists for 27 points, third on the team in goals and points. Another huge win.

- #10 Toby Burgdorf (GK) - has only seen 36 minutes in three games, and let up 9 goals on 14 shots, for just a .357 save percentage. Disappointing statistics, but hard to judge in such a limited sample in games where we have our 2nd and 3rd teamers in the game. Is he the answer next year if he stays for his super senior COVID year? Hard to say. Incomplete.

- #11 Brian Cameron (A) - 20 goals, 6 assists for 26 points, fourth on the team in goals and points. He has been a terrific option on attack, giving RU five legit shooters/scorers. Another big win here.

- #43 Brian Ward (LSM) - sat out last season, and was supposed to have played this year, but hasn’t. Still injured? Or just stuck behind Ethan Rall? Incomplete.

- #55 Brad Apgar (D) - played two games early on (with mixed reviews) but hasn’t played since due to injury. I thought somebody on this board said he would be back for the B1G schedule, but I didn’t see him in the OSU game. So another incomplete.

- #90 Bryant Boswell (D) - has 14 ground balls and 9 caused TOs (second on the team in CTs), and seems to be coming on in the third close defense role (sharing that spot with Jack Stahanczyk). Solid pickup here.

You have to think that our success in turning transfers into productive, key players will make Rutgers a desired destination for players entering the portal this year.

Offensively we have proven that we're a plug and play team which will always lead to attackmen and offensive minded middies wanting to come here. We've become a destination for portal players especially on attack/middie side.

It will be interesting to see how deep Rutgers goes into the portal after this season. It appears that 16 or so key contributors will be using up eligibility after this season including the starting goal keeper, I think the starting defense, 2/3s of the starting attack attack midfield unit and primary rope group.

Yeah, it’s almost scary how many key contributors are listed as “seniors” on the roster. I don’t know if some of them might still have “super senior” eligibility next year, but we are going to lose a bunch of key guys.

We will be losing a bunch of guys. We have some guys coming back though.

As to Ward, he is sadly an injury casualty. However, that kid is invaluable. He would have been a huge bonus on the field, but he's like having another coach on the sidelines. Very mature and grounded kid. We are lucky to have him in the program.

Starting to fear we might not see what Apgar has. With the not surprising emergence of freshman Remi Reynolds at long pole, that has allowed Boswell to move down to his natural close position.

He had a really nice game against OSU and is clearly understanding our scheme better now. He's a big, physical presence who can run.

Do you plug in Apgar who has been out for a month and a half? Not sure at this point if that's a reward worth the risk.

Kid has immense talent though. Maybe redshirt eligible?

More of this guy/type, please.

Boswell is no longer sharing that role with Stahanczyk. It's Boswell's. They moved Stahanczyk up to midfield. He's the third pole. Some nice depth there.

If you really wanted to get Apgar on the field you could slide him in there somewhere. He's a long body that can run. Another great athlete to put out there. You still need to know the slide packages but that position relies slightly more on one on one coverage.

If it was me, I would consider putting him on the wings on faceoffs. Just let him use his ability.

Back to Boswell. If you watch the OSU game closely you will see he picked up a number of really good groundballs, as did the team. We were hoovers that game. Hopefully we can repeat that against Hopkins.

I think there is more than simply recruiting the portal, it is the way they use the kids they get. Connor Kirst was a middie his entire career at Nova, but Seremet moved him to Attack and keep him on the field while utilizing his playmaking ability from the top.

They have done the same with Bartolo and Jacoby as I was skeptical of there ability to play there natural positions at Rutgers but Jacoby at Midfield is a great compliment to Knobloch and Gallagher and Bartolo has really played well at attack.

On the defense, Apgar and Boswell were interesting additions and it appears that after a short stint at LSM Boswell has become comfortable at close which speaks to his versatility.

This team is led by kids who will and have done anything to win. 2 members of our rope group were real offensive threats and when asked the willing moved. Gallagher, Scott, Bartolo and Jacoby have all switched positions.
The entire second midfield group is made up of attackmen.
This team is the epitome of team first and it is great to see.

Team has a ton of experience. Guys who have seen just about every situation. When they lose games it won’t be because they got rattled or nervous. They’re a veteran group. Culture is very good here.

Is there a “Michael Jordan” type for face off’s that we’re. Looking at .

I’ve only watched a few LAX games but noticed that we got less than 40% …and think we’ll need that plus stout D and some luck against MD.

If I'm Brecht, I want Sissleburger bad from Lehigh in the portal. Hopefully our Lax alums and fans can make him a Godfather NIL deal to come here.
