Scratch him off the list.http://espn.go.com/mens-college-bas...th-hawks-basketball-coach-new-5-year-contract
That's good.. Don't want him.
I think either Bannon or Mike Rice could have turned it around except for their unique character flaws which prompted their dismissals. There has to be a less flawed version of Bannon or Rice out there, available for the poaching.
I can think of at least a million reasons, probably more. We would at least double this unnamed coaches salary, maybe closer to triple. And exactly why would he come here ?
You just described the football program,pre-Schiano! With that said, the list could be very large, not short, since like Greg, taking over"the coaching graveyard" might fall upon a very young HC, or a young asst.coach coming from a consistent winning program. Hence, large pool to pick from.It does not matter who RU puts on the list of possible Coaches, what they need to determine is what Coach would be really interested in taking the job & that will not be a very long list. Total lack of institutional & Alumni support for the past 25+ years, non existent facilities compared to our peers, lack of money to hire quality assistant Coaches & decades of losing has turned off HS Coaches & players, & RU does not play the game with the AAU Coaches that is needed to land top recruits. The job is a career killer without very much upside in the eyes of prospective candidates.
Totally different from when Schiano was hired & Schiano was around the 7th choice for the job. Schiano had a list of 32 "demands" to take the job & most of those demands involved RU spending money that they had never spent before, Schiano had an AD who was receptive to these demands & a University President who allowed the AD to spend what was needed to upgrade the program. We now have an Athletic Department that has the largest Athletic subsidy in the nation & a President who is hellbent on doing away with the subsidy, & will not agree to the rampant spending that is needed to turn RU basketball around. Unless Hobbs can find donors with deep pockets willing to invest tons of money into basketball things will not change until the B1G money starts flowing. You just described the football program,pre-Schiano! This job, for all its warts, is still a P5 job, and there's only so many of those available.
I don't doubt anything you just stated, but thinking back about it,if he was that low in the pecking order, then it was pretty ballsy of Greg to ask for "32" demands, lol. I don't think I was that off in saying you were describing pre-Schiano football. In fact they are going to spend money they haven't before on a practice facility, and the new AD Hobbs has said all the right things as far as what's needed. I thought there were plenty of articles stating the President was getting in tune with what needed to be done, and even the State is starting to see the light, and has already passed one bill to help. Sure, private donations will be needed, just like was the case for football. I think the basketball program might have a better chance to turn around, and quicker than football,if this next hire is a home run. It doesn't even have to be a house hold name. I also remember, very clearly, at a TD Club meeting, during the question and answer segment, Big Bob Mulcahy saying there wasn't much they could invest into the RAC, it would be too expensive a fix, and a pipe dream. If in fact, at that time,we had as you said,a President who was willing to let the AD spend what was needed to help the football program, and Bob didn't try at that time, get money to invest into the basketball program, then I could see why there has been as many posters on the basketball forum that trash Mulcahy as there are posters that praise him on the football forum. Before you say it,football drives the bus, we all know that, so Bob felt that's where the money needed to go first, but whatever your going to say to defend Bob on how he treated the basketball program, and surely helped in it's demise, will fall on deaf ears here.Totally different from when Schiano was hired & Schiano was around the 7th choice for the job. "A P5 job" actually refers to football conferences. It's not the same thing for basketball, although it would be a step up for many.
Barchi remains totally committed to eliminating the subsidy & he is getting his marching orders from Trenton on that. Schiano was not ballsy at all to make demands, he did not need the job, RU needed Schiano more than Schiano needed RU. Trenton giving RU a tax credit is a start but that does little to change the fact that there have been no new facilities built by RU for 30 years & there are multiple major projects that need to be addressed soon & the money will have to come from donors, not Trenton or RU.I don't doubt anything you just stated, but thinking back about it,if he was that low in the pecking order, then it was pretty ballsy of Greg to ask for "32" demands, lol. I'd be curious of peoples' responses to your question too. Of course I wouldn't want a guy with a UNC pedigree who turned a woeful team that made a big leap into a much tougher conference and is now on the verge of an NCAA berth. Not to mention he's an awesome recruiter.Guy is one of 10 Finalists for National Coach of the Year and you don't want him ?
I feel committing more than 5 years to any coach is wrong. It seems that a thread started by NewJerseyHawk indicates there are several well thought of coaches ready to come here without many demands, which of course remains to be seen, but it's encouraging. I do believe between Hobbs energizing the fan base, pressure from Delaney {maybe} and a new coach getting us to at least Gary Waters success by year 3, the money will be there to help with what's needed for the program. Barchi, might have to give in despite his feelings,if pressure mounts from outside forces, that for the betterment of the overall view of the University, money needs to continue for sports programs. Listen, I don't have the info people like you and Tru have, so I'm just going on gut feelings, and hope that this will turn around. For those who think Hurley would make a good HC ( not trying to argue that issue in this reply) ,
you can see the difference between the Schiano hire TRU2RU points out and the way RU handled
Danny's demands.
Schiano received assurances he'd get what he wanted and took the job, Hurley didn't and the walked away.
Unless Hobbs can meet the type of demands Hurley gave, RU will not be getting the candidates
that demand to get what they feel needed for them to succeed at RU.
I don't think money was an issue, it was the time Danny felt he needed and when that wasn't given Hurley decided not to take a chance on ruining his career and walked away.
Don't know if Hurley demanded more than the time he felt it would take to turn RU MBB around.
But the refusing to give that time shown that RU wasn't fully commited to do everything it took to rebuild the program and wee afraid to commit to longer than 5 years to a HC.
