Montez Mathis on an unofficial visit NOW

Obviously this is a good sign if his family was there. Players don't make unexpected visits to schools they don't like with their family. Remember, recruiting is a long game. My guess is he was showing his family a school he really likes and wants their approval since we're a top choice for him.

Or he's young and his parents drove him from Maryland to New Jersey. Not sure how many kids travel to University's without their parents.

But it is a good sign that he came.

I think the point is that most parents are not gonna put their time and effort into visiting a school that is not an option. Especially considering the fact that it's an UNOFFICIAL. I think the parents visiting with is more of good sign than just "hey lets go see Rutgers". Of course, it doesn't mean we are his choice as of now.

You're right about his parents visiting and the genuine interest in RU.

Hope we close him.

Lots of patience needed in recruiting. Seems like much more for hoops because you are filling less slots. Seems like the 5 star kids commit earlier to the dukes and Kentuckys as they really feel the pressure of limited slots. Others play the waiting game and hope the dominoes fall our way.

I see what you're saying. It makes sense. But you're not going to have you parents take you on an unplanned trip to a school if you're not seriously considering them. Athlete or non athlete

I have not read this entire thread but in a couple of recent posts I've seen "unplanned visit" & "unexpected visit".

Why do some people think his visit was unplanned or unexpected?

Heard from D1 asst coach who is a friend that Montez M can ball, would be really nice get for RU. Told me Hobbs and Knight really can out work some other programs with recruiting, that is why RU is involved with more kids now than in a very very long time. Playing time, the social aspects of the school (girls), along with (amazingly!) Playstation4, are biggies. Even the younger coaches are amazed how much time this generation spends on these games. He also said the kids are more into nutrition now, but the food and eats have be readily available and easy.

This may have been an unexpected visit to some of the Rutgers fans but Mathis told me that the visit was scheduled last Tuesday.

whether we as RU fans knew about the visit or not, we are happy he made the scheduled visit and appeared to have had another good trip to Piscataway/New Brunswick.

Russ Wood, are you able to share any items that you may know about how this visit went or anything of note (good stuff of course is preferred....!!)

The usual stuff. Loved the campus, visit was great, all schools are equal. Always a good sign when recruits make an unofficial visit.

I expect him to also take visits to Connecticut, Xavier, Virginia Tech & maybe Marquette.

Other than Marquette those schools are reasonable drives from where he lives

I don't think a 2-1/2 hr drive is much of an obstacle for a kid with options.

Using an official visit is a much more important "milestone" since those are restricted. Glad to see him interested; looks like a strong prospect.

That's a strong list of contenders but all have been the names of schools I've seen as far back as the winter as well. If that is the eventual final list Mathis cuts down to at a later date, RU will have to work really hard, but will have potentially outworked a strong group of contenders.. RU (of course), has made him a priority and I'm not saying he doesn't have to work hard to start, but he really fits here the best out of that group of schools (playing time, fit, conference/competition and ability to grow away from home, but not too far away....the SG spot has his name waiting for it, hopefully he steps through that door and takes it.
