No doubt that the conference is down considerably this year, but everyone including ESPN has viewed MSU as final four material, right along side Duke. So, I can't help but think that if a middle of the pack up-and coming ACC conference foe beat Duke, ESPN would extol the depth of such a great conference. But, when OSU upsets MSU, we get this headline:

Michigan State's loss highlights that the Big Ten is a mess -- and boring
http://www.espn.com/blog/collegebas...s-highlights-the-big-ten-is-a-mess-and-boring
Anyone that doesn't think ESPN has an agenda, think again.

The big ten is a mess? What an idiotic statement. Purdue and MSU are two outstanding teams right now. OSU's coach is no joke and has his team playing at a very high level and they can be ranked before you know it. There's some disappointments like North Western as an example but other schools are rebuilding and have proven coaches like Indiana and Illinois who you know are going to be very good. Maryland and Wisconsin are very young teams and Rutgers is getting better and better. Michigan will always attract good players and so will Iowa. It's definitely a down year for Wisky. But to say the BIG 10 is a mess? Just stupido!

We’ve played the best in the conference. I guess we will see what happens with Ohio State. Big 10 is pretty far from a mess.

Mess is a bit of an overstatement by them? Curious where their ACC overrated article is after Duke and UNC lost this week

Duke has enough talent to beat anyone on their day but they don't defend.

UNC is good not great--------UVA is the best team I've seen in the league thus far with Miami and FSU right there--------Clemson a real sleeper.

Most improved is BC-----excellent backcourt .

The ACC has GREATLY benefited from conference realignment. It has raised the profile of every bottom and middle tier ACC team especially. ESPN knows that they’re doing.

You are obviously confused. That’s just a sign of how ultra competitive the ACC is. [eyeroll]

Author of article is a graduate of Minnesota State University. He's been watching too many Coach episode reruns dreaming of his school winning an NC while going undefeated.

In the column he mentions that Purdue and Michigan State are very good, and that he's very much looking forward to their game. He points out it's unfortunate that they only play each othet once this season.

He also points out that Michigan State's blowout loss to Ohio State illustrates the Spartans inconsistencies.

Beyond Purdue and Michigan State I can't think of a single B1G matchup that makes me feel like "Oh I've GOT to see that game."

Several B1G teams have injuries to key players or have a player suspended for one reason or another. That takes the shine off of several games.

Neither Illinois nor Iowa have one a B1G game this season. Outside of Tyler Cook you'd be hard-pressed to get me to watch an Iowa game unless you could guarantee me their head coach was going to have a full-blown meltdown on the sideline.

Meanwhile the ACC has some excitement going on with the teams that are really solid and someone else pointed out in this thread, like Virginia, FSU, Miami a resurgent Clemson. Some good storylines there meanwhile when North Carolina or Duke play it will still draw lots eyeballs to TV.

The columnist seems to be a fan of the B1G but he just feels that with the conference being down this year it's kind of boring to watch.

I got to admit I watch a lot of B1G basketball and just the other day I forgot to come back during second half of one of the games.

Wouldn't sleep on Michigan. They beat UCLA earlier this year. Their moment of truth is tonight at home against Purdue and this weekend in East Lansing. Michigan State, Purdue, Ohio State, Michigan. It's not all bad.

While you make a lot of good points I agree with, I think the OP is trying to discuss the misappropriation of this game result, using a forces perspective to try and down play the big ten.

I agree with the OP. This article could easily be “Surprise Ohio St team beat consensus final 4 Michigan St; elevates to big ten contender”.

The ACC is now getting the SEC football treatment. The ACC is still the stronger conference. But ESPN makes sure to keep trending the same narrative no matter what the result is or what else the story could be. ESPN knows that they are doing.

Yeah but the guy is a columnist, his job is to stir things up a little big and instigate discussion and debate which, TA-DA, he did.

I read the column through that filter.

All fair points. But, IMHO, a media outlet’s bias can usually be discerned from the headline, which often the columnist does not write. I don't think the headline was fair and I also think it exposes ESPN's bias. Just one man's view.

I was going to point out the same thing. In this day and age of publishing without an editor's "intrusion," sometimes a writer can write a headline, but more often than not he does not. I thought the column itself was all right and the headline just wan't fair.

Feel better -- read cbssports.com's "Poll Attacks" for this week and see an AP voter get ripped for having Purdue too low.
