More Hyatt

McConnell beat defensively on several plays last night.

He didn’t have a good game, but this year his presence is needed on both ends even when not at his best.

He does a lot of things that we really need on offense against teams with a pulse. Especially teams that play man. It wasn’t a strong defensive performance for him (he got beat on a few plays but overall he wasn’t “awful” we’re just used to better from him. To his credit, he avoided foul trouble the whole game which is important on the road.

We need to find 25 minute for Hyatt and 15 minutes for Simpson . Period

That’s 40 minutes to keep cam, Caleb, Paul , and mag number to 30.
Hyatt played 26 minutes yesterday. Simpson did not deserve more minutes in the game. He played 9 and did not look good in this one. Keeping the turnover count down (11 total) was a huge factor in winning the game.

When you play elite defense like Caleb did last year you have to find rest on the offensive end, which he often did. This year Caleb is exerting more energy on the offensive end so he is having a few more lapses defensively. It happens. There’s only so much gas in the tank. BTW, Caleb is still an elite defender (although admittedly not as good as last year).

His minutes came at the expense of Mag. It really is Simpson who takes minutes from Cam Caleb and Paul.

I am happy with Hyatt/Mag playing 40 with Mag getting 25 and Hyatt 15. People are happy with Hyatt today. If Mag doesn’t get in foul trouble I am confident NW doesn’t go on a run and we win going away with Hyatt on the bench.

Agreed. And it’s as much about offense (handling the ball / not necessarily putting it in the basket) as it is defense. When foul trouble is a major factor with any of 3 starting guards, Pike goes deeper into the bench and gives Miller a few minutes. He’s the coach and seems to know playing Mag or Hyatt on the perimeter usually does not work out that well for us.

The only game where he was stuck playing them together was UMass Lowell when Paul couldn’t go. Considering the competition, they were awful in that game.

100%. There was a play he was a step away from contesting a made 3 late in the game yesterday and he made a half hearted attempt where he barely moved his feet.

Caleb was gassed. Against MD Pike was able to give him 7 or so minutes of rest in half 2. He wasn’t able to do that last night. Hurts us in the short, medium and long term.

Pike knows his team obviously, but I wonder how close, if at all, he is to giving Miller minutes.
If Simpson is gonna continue to give us zero offensively he might as well. Then again I'm not convinced Miller is a better defender.

That’s not fair.

Simpson contributed on offense in nearly every game except NW and even yesterday he had a nice pass to Dean where Dean drew contact.

It was much easier to play Miller (I.e. a player who was zero threat to score and hasn’t really demonstrated great distribution skills) filler minutes last year when we had 2 guys on the court with him who could create their own shots (RHJ and Geo). Hyatt and Caleb are the only guys on the roster (and maybe Simpson but he’s not quite there yet) who can create for themselves and none are particularly efficient. To Caleb’s credit, he seemed to recognize yesterday that his shot is off. He didn’t force things - only took 6 shots yesterday and 2 of them were with the shot clock expiring.

Simpson is just not there yet. My guess is he is the better player in practice though. Pike is trying to bring him a long slowly because they are going to need him late season. That’s why he’s getting minutes now. If you need Miller late season on a defensive assignment, you can throw him in and you know what you’ll get. Simpson needs more development time.

Hyatt would be consistent solid player if he doesnt force things.
  • Just take open shots when he has them.
  • If he doesn't have open shot just pass it right away.
  • Stop trying to beat people off dribble with no dribbling skills. Every time he tries this, too many times he doesn't have control of the ball and gets stopped with his drive and loses the ball. He then gets lackadaisical and gets behind on defense.
Concentrate more on defense and run the floor harder. Take the open shot if he has it.

IF HE DOESNT FORCE THINGS - HE IS A GOOD PLAYER!

You mean the play where Dean didn’t draw contact and then missed the first FT. Lots of bitching about the bad calls that went against us but silence about the ones we get.

Hyatt doesn’t force. Mag, Caleb and Simspon do.

Whether he drew contact or not has nothing to do with the point I made. It was a very nice pass by Simpson. Miller has not shown an ability to make those kind of plays on ball distribution.

You can’t be serious. He didn’t force in the NW game. Great game from him. Are you seriously saying he generally doesn’t force though? That’s a huge problem of his. It’s why his overall shooting percentage is one of the worst on the team among players who see meaningful minutes.

Neither has. It was the only nice dish Simpson made this year, and I think Miller also has just one. If your point was that Simpson should be a regular player and Miller not, I agree 100%

So did Hyatt... in crunch time... back to back plays for a 3 and a layup

If Simpson is gonna continue to give us zero offensively he might as well. Then again I'm not convinced Miller is a better defender.
If Simpson is struggling Miller could make a cameo. He seems like his offense improved a little and he's willing to attack the rim and dish.

Defensively Buie or Audige are guys he could have given some quality minutes against

My point is that Simpson isn’t generally a complete non threat on offense the way Miller is. He scores and he has had some nice assists this season.

But Miller would still be a more appealing option to sub in for Pike than moving Mag or Hyatt to a role that involves ball handling should more than one of our starting guards ever end up in early foul trouble at the same time. That would be the scenerio where he would see PT.

I know this is a place where we all think we are experts and like to bloviate but can’t we enjoy a nice road win for 24 hours before ripping into each players weaknesses? At least some of you point out strengths and weaknesses but enjoy the freaking win!
