In 2006, the year prior to taking the head coach job, Stanford was 1-11. Stanford was awful 2002-2006, posting a record of 16-40.

In 2007, Harbaugh was 4-7, and in 2008, he was 5-7. In his first game as Stanford head coach, they lost to a crappy UCLA team 45-17 at home. They got walloped 2 or 3 more times in 2007. In season 2, they got shellacked by Arizona State 41-17. Stanford started to look more competitive in the middle of season 2 of the Harbaugh era, and in year 3, they went 8-5 with no blowout losses.

Is Chris Ash Jim Harbaugh? No. Were Stanford fans going ballistic after the first game loss to UCLA in his first season? I don't know. Just thought I would put this out there.

It is commonly said that a team improves the most from the first game of the season to the second game. The baseline for performance was set yesterday against a very good team in Washington and will need to be interpreted after a game next week against a non-power conference team in Howard. I believe the radio guys said that Washington was the defensive team leader of the PAC 12 last year and had a lot of returning starters back. They were just a tough team to open up with and initiate new offensive & defensive schemes through a new coaching staff. Conversely, RU should be more superior to Howard on athleticism alone. It will be easier to execute well offensively & defensively using the same schemes. Overall. RU will not be as bad a team as they looked against Washington or as good of a team as they should look against Howard. The real proof of the team beginning to jell will be against the average type opponents as the season progresses. Don't make any final judgments on this team because of the first two games. Some segments of the team might need more time to improve season-wise than other groups. Put the measuring sticks away until mid season.

Maybe Mehringer or Ash need to pump up Laviano in the pregame like Harbaugh did with the Michigan QB:

The Michigan QB's first pass was an INT. [roll]

Thank you. It took exactly 3 hours for half this board to lose the big picture.
I think you're being too kind. I was checking in on the board from my phone and it seemed clear to me that half the board lost it's perspective before the game started.

Not that upset, Virginia with new coach lost to Richmond. Still have the other coach's players.

I was very upset, but I’ve calmed down now that it’s the next day. After all, we lost to a good team and Ash could still turn things around. As much as I am disappointed, things could be worse. There are some other fan bases that have to feel a lot worse than we do, Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi State, Temple, Northwestern, Buffalo, Virginia, and Kentucky.

A RUTGERS "Feel Bad" isn't as Bad as those other Fans "Feel Bads" because we are used to having "Feel Bads".

I couldn't care less if Ash went "wacky and a lunatic" like Harbaugh if he achieved the same success as JH.
