The 1975-76 Rutgers basketball team became the 19th NCAA men’s team to finish its regular season undefeated. They went 26-0 and made Rutgers only trip to the Final Four.
“I’ll admit I’m thinking of an undefeated season,” senior co-captain Nate Toran said. “The basketball team set the stage last year, now I’d like to follow it up with a season even better than last.”

Hawaii made its first ever appearance on the East coast and brought the chippy play from the year before when fights broke out in Honolulu. The October 7, 1975 Targum reported, “During the game Saturday 23 flags were thrown, including several personal foul calls, marring what was otherwise a display of hard hitting defensive football.” The previous day’s Targum reported Rutgers prevailed 7-3 and, “Nate Toran, John Alexander, Rich Wagner, Dan Gray and Dwight Lipscomb all shared the spotlight for the third consecutive Saturday. Those five compromised what has to rate as one of the finest defensive fronts in the East.”
