NCAA Baseball Regionals

Upset of the day ALMOST came in the last game of the day, played when most of y’all were asleep. #3 seeded Oregon State needed a walk-off walk in the 10th inning to knock off sub .500 New Mexico State. All of the of the other nationally seeded teams , with one other exception, romped in their opening games.

San Diego’s win over Vandy was probably the biggest surprise of the day.

Not a big upset but UConn beat Wake.

Wake CF pulled a Jose Canseco. He went back to the wall for a fly ball only to have it hit him smack on top of his head. Only difference was is stayed in the park.

Stated this in a series of other posts, but UConn should be the Northeastern role model that we emulate. Their scheduling strategy is exemplary and they recruit well from a broad geographic area. We should play them annually.

For the most part. They played a couple teams early that were highly ranked and enough wins put them in the Top 25. They stayed there the rest of the season by beating teams they should. By the end of the regular season their SOS was worse than RU and RPI wasn't as good. Didn't matter because they won a really weak Big East tourney.

I understand with the help of UConn MLBers they raised enough $ to have good facilities

No reason RU MLBers and a few good boosters can't do the same. But I can't be spending other people's money. Maybe the team players can conduct an annual candy sale or wash cars, until they raise enough cash for stadium upgrades.

Looks like we have the bones for this already. Just have to pretty it up and add proper seating without blind spots.

1 guy unless you count EY, the Braves 1B coach. I agree you can't expect them to pay or make large donations for it. Perhaps if they're willing, put their names to the effort or maybe glad hand potential donors.

Moot at this point…I cannot root for that place…
That’s where we disagree somewhat. If what happens this year gives the committee members pause to reflect on how they treated the Big Ten, it’s not totally moot. I also want Coach Owens to be able to make the best argument that this league is a solid baseball league.

Next year scheduling. Wouldn't be surprised if Owens just got off the phone. He's found three more local scheduling possibilities:
Hofstra- lost to UNC 15-4 and Georgia 24-1
LIU - lost to Maryland 23-2 and Wake Forest 10-4
Army-lost to USM 2-0 and Kennesaw St 9-8

Local teams, tournament tested! Perfect fit.

Ru Husky. Rutgers baseball fan from Mudville.

Absolutely Rutgers and the conference got screwed.
If you do a side by side with teams like Dallas Baptist, Grand Canyon, and Ole Miss it's pretty clear why they were chose ahead of RU.

I wanted RU in as much as anyone but the numbers just weren't there. For example, did you know that RU's OOC SOS was 243rd out of 301 D1 teams? That RU only played 4 games out of 59 against Quad 1 going 1-3?

You can’t go play southern teams OOC when you’ve been in a gym with snow on the ground.

Then it'll never change Zap. Rutgers played 1 very good and 1 average team in the Myrtle Beach area this year going 2-1. You don't have to play Tennessee, Arkansas, and Texas but you can get into a round robin or a 2 game series. The way the RPI works you really don't get punished losing to a top 25, it's basically a push. Win a game or two and it can carry you a la UConn.

Rutgers passes the eye test.

common now. Did you watch our team this year. ? As the Iowa coach said , the RPI is a joke as it has the built in bias against northern teams. Tell me 5 other teams in the country that have the offensive fire power 1-9 in the lineup. We are tops in every offensive category. So we are fun to watch as well as being very good. The only thing we lack are top end starting pitchers although Florence and Fitzpatrick coming back from injury would have won us a regional.

We were projected in by every baseball person as a 3 seed in the regional. Losing to Michigan after going 3-0 and winning that last game by a run rule at 3 am was and is not a reason to exclude us. Just tells you that the committee knew shit about our team and Maryland , Michigan and Iowa. For the last month and a half we were just outside the top 25 in the coaches poll. That is a definite at large team not close to being a bubble team. Your comparisons are bullshit because it is based on some teams beating supposed other good teams. We did not play enough of them but we annihilated almost every other team in the so called Quads 3 and 4. Anyone with a set of eyes and actually watched our team this year would have said they are a damn very very good team offensively and defensively. Your defending the committee is just bullshit and every baseball person in college baseball knows it.

"We did not play enough of them" Exactly. That had to be a big factor. RU just didn't have enough wins that impressed.

Tell me who RU should have replaced in the tourney. Here is a comparison of 3 teams others have questioned....

Dallas Baptist - RPI #29, SOS #10, Non Conf SOS #1, 13-10 vs Quad 1.

Grand Canyon - RPI #50, SOS #80, Non Conf SOS #11, 8-7 vs Quad 1

Ole Miss - RPI #40, SOS #18, Non Conf SOS #107, 8-13 vs Quad 1

By comparison

Rutgers - RPI #43, SOS #148, Non Conf SOS #243, 1-3 vs Quad 1

Pilking up runs vs some of the worst teams in the country doesn't help. Neither does losing to Princeton, SHU and 2 of 3 to Omaha.

So percentage wise they are only slightly ahead of the big 10.

Looking at the regionals so far there is no doubt RU belonged and would have been competitive. If RU had Ole Miss metrics, the committee would still have found a way to keep them out.

I posted that a few of the 9 teams from the ACC that were at-large picks were a joke.
In particular, Rutgers was clearly better that Florida State.

Florida State lost 21-7 against Auburn.

With the new indoor facility we should be at somewhat less of a disadvantage.Pitching would be behind but non excuse for hitting and fielding. There isn’t a person on this board who hasn’t made our pitching out to be lacking overall. I remember Rutgers under Hill Sr.opening with Miami and going 2-2 … May have even been 3-1. The U Conn program has done a great job in scheduling . Their coach is a proven recruiter of different areas in the country . Owens is in the same mold.
