Chris Ash, Rutgers
It was just last season when Rutgers had seven current and former players dismissed for coordinating robberies, star receiver Leonte Carroo suspended for a domestic violence arrest and head coach Kyle Flood suspended for illegally contacting a tutor. The Scarlet Knights were the most visible mess of any program last season, and the administration responded by firing athletic director Julie Hermann and Flood. This comes just three seasons after moving from the Big East to the Big Ten, where football wins already were bound to be at a premium.

Welcome to Rutgers, Chris Ash!

As Rutgers tries to rehab its sullied public image, the Scarlet Knights face a daunting conference schedule (trips to Michigan State and Ohio State and a home tilt with Michigan) and open the season at Washington, a game which it’s almost sure to lose. The Scarlet Knights do return a competent, if unspectacular starting quarterback in Chris Laviano (former blue-chip QB recruit Hayden Rettig and TCU transfer Zach Allen will also compete for the job), but will be installing a new ‘power spread’ offense under offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer. The running backs, Robert Martin and Josh Hicks, are considered strong options. The offensive line, however, isn’t.

With so much uncertainty entering fall camp and the departure of the team’s best player (Caroo), Ash likely will have a difficult first year in Piscataway.

If anyone thought that he was going to come in here and go 8 and 4 has no idea as to where this program is. It is going to take 3 years or so to start seeing results. This is a long term project. I think he is the right guy for the job, but like Coach Schiano it will take a few years.

So Dawg a few posts, mostly negative towards RU? The Huskies are perfect? What weaknesses on your side of the ball. Just interested.

Hmm, @Purple_Dawg, seems Petersen has had his own issues with player arrests. And it looks like he let Miles back on the team. How nice of him. Rutgers dismissed all of the players involved in a fight, even the ones that were not charged, along with the TWO players arrested in a robbery.

Oh, and Sam Ukwuachu says Hello to Chris Petersen.

http://blogs.seattletimes.com/husky...ally-filed-against-uws-damoreea-stringfellow/

Stringfellow and Miles have been suspended indefinitely from team activities since Feb. 5. Neither has participated in UW’s spring practices.

According to the charging documents, Stringfellow assaulted a woman at a celebratory bonfire, where a large crowd had gathered near UW’s Greek Row shortly after the Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos.

Miles, wearing a Broncos beanie, and Stringfellow were both present at the bonfire.

Stringfellow “was shoving a Broncos hat or beanie in the faces of celebrating Seahawks fans. An unknown male ran into the crowd, grabbed the hat from Stringfellow’s hand, and threw it either on the ground or towards the fire,” according to the charging documents. “Stringfellow and the unknown male began fighting. Bystanders quickly stepped in to separate the two.”

A woman who lived on Green Row and who had rented a digital camera from UW was taking pictures of the celebration and “snapped multiple pictures of the aftermath of the altercation, though she did not realize at the time precisely what she was photographing,” the documents read. “After being separated, Stringfellow turned, saw (the woman) with the camera, and headed straight towards her. He grabbed aggressively for the camera, and the two struggled over it. (The woman) had the strap around her wrist, so Stringfellow was unable to wrest it from her. Witnesses characterized the struggle in varying terms ranging from (the woman) being shaken around violently to her being moved around a little bit.”

The woman reported having a “mild fever” that day.

During the struggle, “Stringfellow hit (her) in the head. (She) fainted, though it appears she was not out for a long period of time (it is unclear whether she passed out from the blow or due to the exertion and the fact she was ill).”

The camera lens “either broke off or came loose in Stringfellow’s hand. He then threw it into or in the direction of the fire. Someone yelled, ‘yo String, let’s go,” and Stringfellow and Miles left while (the woman) was carried into a nearby fraternity house.”

About 50 minutes later, Stringfellow and Miles got out of a car and asked a man if he was a Seahawks fan. The man “replied something to effect of ‘yeah of course, are you Broncos fans? When Stringfellow said yes, (the Seahawks fan) said ‘tough night to be a Broncos fan’ and tried to walk past them. Stringfellow blocked his path and got up very close to him. (The Seahawks fan) put his hands up in front of and close to his chest. Stringfellow said he felt threatened and pushed (the Seahawks fan) into a hedge. (The Seahawks fan) pushed him back, and Stringfellow began punching him, striking him at least once in the lower jaw. (The Seahawks fan) tried to get away by running downa nearby path … Stringfellow and Miles chased him, with Stringfellow in the lead.”

After catching up with the Seahawks fan, Stringfellow “punched him again in the head and cheek.” An unknown female in the car “yelled at Stringfellow and Miles to come out and get out of there. The two ran back to the car, which drove off …”

The Seahawks fan had a black eye, a cut lip and scrapes on his elbows.

The fan and his girlfriend, also present, identified Stringfellow as the “primary aggressor.” Miles had chased the fan, but neither the fan nor his girlfriend “could state with any certainty that Miles actually struck” the fan during the assault.

Stringfellow transferred to Ole Miss. Perfect fit.

We have very little talent. Hoping for 4 to 5 wins.

I just pray Ash can keep the recruits believing by signing day. I expect a few blowouts. He needs to pull a Schiano circa '03, "You guys come, we light this place up."

RU might as well forfeit this game as the great SI Swami says there is no chance to win. Washington is good, but Rutgers has seen better in its own league. Tell the Huskies to overlook RU, since they pose no threat.

If anyone thought that he was going to come in here and go 8 and 4 has no idea as to where this program is. It is going to take 3 years or so to start seeing results. This is a long term project. I think he is the right guy for the job, but like Coach Schiano it will take a few years.
Agreed, although unlike with Schiano I don't think it will take until year 5 to break through. The cupboard isn't nearly as bare as it was then, we had a roster that was at best resembling an FCS squad. Right now we have a roster that resembles a good G5 program aka not enough to compete in a tough Big Ten East, but not one that can't win a few games. Bottom line, I'd expect to breakthrough in year 3 with Ash. This year you have to write off already, next year we should see serious improvement, but yet not quite there.

Frankly (with what was written in the original post), I actually had already forgotten about most - if not all - of that stuff. I've spent the last 6 months focused on Ash and everything he's been bringing to the program, including lots of great recruits. And, I'm sure that a few of those recruits will be starting this fall (to make up for what folks above have been calling a "bare cupboard").

Ash will survey what he's got to work with and if he/the coaching staff feel as though someone else can play/start at that position (other than whoever started last year), then they will probably give that person an opportunity. For example, Hayden Rettig or Zach Allen may wind up starting over Laviano. I'm just trying to be a bit more optimistic than some of the comments I'm reading above.

Oh and - to the OP - what first-year coach ever has a walk in the park? Nebraska had a ton of talent last year and Riley brought them a 5-win regular season. Todd Sherman, meanwhile, (from the same coaching tree as our very own Coach Ash) brought Houston an 11-win regular season, after they had a slightly-better-than mediocre year in 2014 (7-regular season wins). I think it has a lot more to do with the coaching staff more than anything else.

Wow, that article was really going off of a hazy understanding of the details of last season.... it's like the source of information was a guy who talked with a guy who knew someone who read a Star Ledger article once.

This is definitely a "rebuilding" year for us. New coach, new staff, new offensive philosophy, new defensive philosophy, new tackling technique, coming off a couple of leaner recruiting years, replacing the entire LB corps and rebuilding other positions, with a very tough schedule.

Not expecting us to be a full steam ahead this season - just looking to stop the water that has been gushing into the ship, bail out some of the water that's already there, get our bearings, and start moving forward again.

RU, like almost all first year coaches who take over for fired coaches, will struggle. We are changing our whole system and almost everything around it. That takes years in football to show wins on the field.

I think we have the talent to be good but we are VERY thin at spots. Unfortunately we have a tough schedule this year that may limit our wins...

What these preseason analyses never seem to consider is the impact of a (hopefully) healthy Hamilton and Turay. I'd have no problem if they were labelled as question marks for health reasons, but they shouldn't be ignored.

This season is largely a giant unknown, so I can't really knock prognosticators for being conservative. (I can knock them for factual inaccuracies, like above - which is just lazy journalism).

- We don't know who our QB will be, nor how well that QB will adjust to a system he's never run in a game before
- We don't know who our OLine will be, nor how well that line will adjust to running a power spread scheme
- We have largely untested WR corps, the depth of which will be leaned on heavily in a scheme that likes to spread the ball around
- We have all new LBs
- We return Hamilton from injury and hopefully will have Turay at 100%
- We are installing an entirely new tackling technique
- We are changing our defensive calls and philosophy
- Our secondary from last year was patchwork due to dismissals and relied on some true freshmen, which should be alleviated a bit this year
- Our new coach has two years of experience playing many of the teams on our schedule, which may help mitigate some of the transition growing pains
- The overall schedule sets up very tough this season

Lots of unknowns, which makes the season very hard to predict.

Clarifying facts is fine, we all know these articles are constantly off.. You did not personally attack him, turning this into a "whose program is worse" thread is defensive and antagonistic.

Read your response here, your overall demenaor is nothing but inflammatory in both posts.

Isn't the general consensus that Turay is going to miss a significant portion of the season?

As of last month, Ash expected Turay to be ready for training camp.

"He's gone through some stuff. It's no secret," Ash said. "He had end-of-season issues and they've been taken care of and he's in rehab and everything like that. But everybody that missed any time, we fully anticipate them to all be back by the time we start camp."

I deal with reporters in my line of work, and I often find myself cringing when I read an article after they interview me. I'm not talking about slanted opinions, I'm talking about reporting the basic facts of the story - names, numbers, timelines, titles, etc. Basic fact checking in journalism has gone out the window.

No he came here with troll intentions. Any attack towards the OP is warranted. You really think he came here to educate us by posting a disparaging nonfactual article from si.com about RU and Ash. It's not even a Washington based outlet, but national anyone can see it. Use common sense please.

As far as Washington's weaknesses ... that's an easy one. The Huskies gave up 34 sack last season and had the worst 3rd down conversion rate of any team in the PAC along with a horrible redzone record. The Washington OC is pure crap imo and he's the only asst. coach that didn't get a contract extension last year. This will be a make or break year for him.

You should have done your homework. Petersen was on the job for less than a month when that took place. One player was given the boot and the other one was forced to transfer. Both of those kids were 4* players yet Petersen didn't have a problem getting rid of both of them. Marcus Peters ... 1st round draft NFL pic last year was also given the boot halfway through the season for having a bad attitude and berating the coaches.

The incident in Boise...player was given the boot and transferred to Baylor.

Yeah it's always interesting for a fan base to hear another article about player arrests(probably read this over a 100 times), how RU is going to be sh*t and our new coach is going to struggle. He's going to need a few years to get his players in place. Fans want wins NOW and they don't realize it takes a good 4 - 5 years for a HC to get his recruits on the field.... filling the recruiting pipeline so to say.

I didn't write the article.
Yeah, but you posted it here, with no comment or anything. Your first post was a throw-down thread on how we should fear the Huskies. You seem like you want co come over here to start trouble. Like @koleszar said above. Did you really need to post the article here? Was there anything in that article Rutgers fans did not know about?

Did my research just fine.
1. Fact- Cyler Miles was involved in the incident with Stringfellow. From the Seattle "Miles had chased the fan, but neither the fan nor his girlfriend “could state with any certainty that Miles actually struck” the fan during the assault."
2. Petersen named Miles the starting QB after the incident.
3. I said Stringfellow transferred to Ole Miss.
4. Petersen's Words: “After Sam Ukwuachu was dismissed from the Boise State football program and expressed an interest in transferring to Baylor, I initiated a call with coach Art Briles. In that conversation, I thoroughly apprised Coach Briles of the circumstances surrounding Sam’s disciplinary record and dismissal.” Why did he even bother doing that for the kid if he was already charged with rape?

5. Rutgers promptly dismissed all of the players initially charged in a fight and in the robbery, and none of them were allowed back on the team. Three of the players in the fight ultimately were not charged, and at most programs, these players would be allowed back on the team. Did not happen at Rutgers.
6. Kyle Flood was dismissed at the end of last season. He did not do anything "illegal." He violated Rutgers policy on coaches contacting professors. He was dismissed. We have a new Coach Chris Ash. He did not let the players involved in both incidents back on the team.

Again, what was the point of posting the story? We are well aware that this will be a transition year with a new coach and a new offensive system. Maybe you should have done some research.

Charges against Miles were dismissed yet you failed to mention that. It wasn't Washington that won the Fulmer Cup.

As far as the article goes, It wasn't meant to be a troll. It was an article on 1st year coaches that are expected to struggle and the Rutgers HC was mentioned and seeing how this is a Rutgers board I thought some posters here might find it interesting to see what's being written about Rutgers in manor media sources.

We're Rutgers. To be blunt, yes we do. GS would have been "ok" in the B1G, but we went in with HS coach. Now we have a LEGIT Power 5 coach. We'll wait another 3yrs before we start bringing the Big Boys to the brink week in and week out.

I did mention that he was not charged. The difference is, Rutgers took care of business right away in dismissing players and not letting anyone involved in the incidents back on the team. And as a matter of decorum, I would NEVER go to another team's board and drop a crappy article like you did. No harm, no foul. Let's move on. [cheers]

I will say this ... there was something fishy about the charges being dropped on Miles. There were several witnesses as to what had happened and the next thing you know the witnesses changed their story and pointed the finger at Stringfellow ..the UW WR. Miles was supposed to start at QB the following season.

Back to football, will the Huskies be a stronger running or passing team this year? You guys should favor the pass to test out our defensive secondary, which had a tough year last year. Hopefully, a year of experience of trial by fire, some new players, and Chris Ash coaching them up will yield much better results.

That kind of stuff goes on everywhere. Rutgers has taken a very hard stance with any kind of shenanigans. Carroo had charges dropped, but the whole situation/arrest was very sketchy. One of the players involved in the fight last year had an assault charge that was dropped because the witness would not testify. That player was allowed back on the team, which was out of character for Rutgers. It's a tough call when the charges are dropped. Sometimes the kid was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes it is a misunderstanding and the kid is not guilty of anything. Sometimes the kid gets away with something because the witness is afraid to testify or they are otherwise persuaded to not testify.
Wisconsin's RB Clements had a situation where he started a fight last year. He claims he was not the aggressor, but campus security cameras proved otherwise. He got a one game suspension and kept playing. Think he had an otherwise clean record, and if a kid has a minor hiccup on a clean record, a second chance seems reasonable.

Arkansas fans did not think we were a threat and we beat them twice. We are the underdogs here but Hamilton back is big. Still remember a post on another board where a Penn State fan wrote he never wanted to see hamilton play again vs PSU. Hamilton was that tough to block.
