New DC is confirmed

so if the staff budget was stated as 2.5 million, and no way they can give this NIU guy a lot of money as the d cord,so...where is all the rest of the money going for staff salary, with two spots left open? Either Im missing something or moneys going somewhere else? anyone else wondering the same?

I think the rest of the money is going to the coaches with the famed title "quality control"

I agree that it feels like it's not his first or second choice. He said he came in with a 5 deep at each coaching position, and this seems more like a comfort hire then his other hires which have been young up-and-comers rapidly moving through the ranks.

Seems like a guy he knows and is comfortable with who will do what he tells him. Not clear how much value is adding, to be honest.

Not down on the hire, per se, but don't see the upside I've seen in all the other hires so far.

Golden as Quality Control.

Stop being obtuse. First of all using another negative poster as an ally does not make your negative comments any more real..

Second, let's just go with what we know. Schiano was a killer DC at Miami with a boatload of talent. He came here and got whupped repeatedly for a few years. When he did have enough talent he looked like a Defensive wizard again.

Third, of course this will be the Defense Ash wants to run but it can be Schiano, Ash, Neiman or god himself calling the Defense and it will only work when we have either veterans who have developed or young studs to execute it. A combination of both is always good..
put down the kool aid

Just skim reading around...it seems the "Drake Boys" are fond of each other. These guys are also values people who aren't looking to uproot their family and go around the country every two years chasing a career. Niemann also isn't one to aim for "statistics" and has said as much. Coach says he wants to be involved in 4 key areas of his players lives "spiritual, social, athletic, academic".

Drake guys sticking together:

"Niemann and Huskie head coach Dave Doeren's relationship can be traced back to Drake University. After Doeren wrapped up his playing career in 1993 as a Bulldog, Niemann was the defensive coordinator at the time, and hired Doeren to become a graduate assistant to help coach the defense.

Niemann stated that the door for a reunion was always kept open even after him and Doeren went their separate ways after working together at Drake.

"There wasn't necessarily an understanding," Niemann said. "But I think there was always a thought there that, if one of us had the opportunity to hire the other, whichever way it would work out, that possibility did exist that we would come back together and get chance to work again. Fortunately, it came here at NIU."

Stats = meh:

"Jay Niemann is the defensive coordinator at Northern Illinois, a program that also employs a fast-paced offense, ranking 12th in the nation with 1,022 offensive plays.

Niemann, whose defense ranked 85th in scoring this past season, said an up-tempo offense is "a double-edged sword."

"You love the fact that you can score points and you never feel like you are out of a game as a team," Niemann said. "The downside of that, defensively, is you are often times on the field a lot. Often times you are on the field without chances to make the kind of adjustments you need to make.

"I think it's important as a program that the No. 1 goal is to win the game. You don't worry about the stats -- how many yards you give up, how many yards you make." Niemann said he watched "parts" of the Orange Bowl when Clemson committed three turnovers in the second quarter...

"Unfortunately in the world we live in, in Division I athletics, when you do stub your toe and lose a game, everyone is looking to point a finger at somebody," Niemann said.

"And often times with offenses that play in that style, if the defense can't get its job done, that's where the finger points."

I hope your fans will be patient. This is not a 2 year fix. Give the caches time. I hope they can give you guys a B1G quality defense. Best of luck.

A very reasonable post, St_Henry, but asking for that on this board is like asking the captain of the Titanic to slow down in an iceberg field; a prudent idea, but one that will often go ignored, (and usually by the same posters over and over again).

The last coaching "savant" we had here was given 4 full years to prove his incompetence as a head coach before finally being shown the door, yet we have some people already predicting doom and gloom for the new regime before Chris Ash and Co. have even had the chance to coach their first spring practice, let alone their first real game.

You're a visitor to this board, (and welcome, I'd like to add), but if you frequent it often enough you'll find there's a core group of posters who just don't seem to be happy unless they're continuously complaining about something. -It's just their way.

All good points. Still not sold, to be fair, but I understand Niemann's comments. Even with a de-emphasis on stats, though, they had a pretty steep dropoff this season within the same offensive style with a nearly intact defense returning - which gives a little bit of pause.

I have no reason to doubt Ash's judgement, and the defensive identity is coming from him - I'm sure he's looking for a right hand he can trust to do it the way he wants. Only way to judge is the product on the field.

Edit: The quotes from Ash in this thread make a lot of sense: https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/threads/ash-quotes-on-hiring-dc.63545/

Too bad you didn't hire him a few years back, you might have gotten 2 geat LBs out of the deal.

Son #1 is a current starter for Iowa, and #2 will be an incoming freshman next season.

I would never want to play for my father in college. That is a tough situation. Best to go somewhere else.

Rossi's defense gave up 36 points per game (not including Norfolk St.) so even 28 points would be an improvement!

And as others have said, he probably wasn't hired to totally run the show....

#90. vrs pass 2015/2016 243 yrds per game. NIU
# 117. RU vrs pass 2015/16. 275 yrds per game. RU

#72. vrs rush 174 yrds pr game. NIU (MAC)
#85. vrs rush 186 yrds pr game.RU (B10)

not overall excited about this new DC.
