Happy New Years my fellow Grappling fans!! Decided to change things up a bit this week and see what y'all think... Definitely don't want this to be JerseyHawk long either...lol...
In a nutshell... Minny match played out to where most would've predicted...Really felt we needed both 157 and 174 to win the match..(those 2 bouts were the key for either side) Here's a few of my thoughts...
JVB... Lets remember that he has always been a fringe top 20 kid throughout his career...Last year at NCAA's he made a hell of a run that just fell short of AA status... He just doesn't have the overall skillset to be considered a top 10 wrestler at his weight... What he does have, is the ability to score huge in spurts and/or pin people... If you limit his opportunities to hit big moves by staying out of scrambles... It makes him have to rely on more conventional technical wrestling...
Grello… As we saw in the 3rd period, talent isn't the issue... Confidence in his skills is what's holding him back... Also don't forget that he is only a soph...Hopefully he can build off his 3rd period vs Skatzka and take it forward into this weekend...
Steveson… yeah I thought the "Ali shuffle" was cute in his varsity debut vs Ok.St.. But he has A LOT to learn about what being a "SHOWMAN" and "PUTTING ON A SHOW" mean... Nolf and Nickall put on a show.. Taylor and Dake put on shows... What do they have in common? CLASS and RESPECT!! They never ONCE did anything demeaning to their opponents!! They EARNED the respect of everyone!! Even from people who hated them!! Steveson..(who's first name was given to him by his parents, but has not EARNED the right to be called it by me...yet) could learn A LOT from them!!
On to this weekend...
I have Whisky being a real tight one.. I have a 5-5 split in matches.. Bonus points are going to be key here.. How close? If things play out to what I believe on paper.. I have it 19-18 Whisky... cant wait to see what happens tomorrow night...
Ok. St. Obviously pretty big underdogs here... But the 2 biggest takeaways will be 133 and 149... For both Suriano and Ashnault to be tested big time on the same day... In the same dual!! That's worth the price of admission alone!! Can the rest of the team step up and make some of these matches really interesting? Lets see!! I'm excited!! B1G weekend of wrestling coming up!! Lets pack the RAC and make ourselves loud!!
