No. 10 Rutgers Women's Soccer at No. 8 Northwestern

Down 1-0 early. We have to stop giving up early goals and playing from behind.

1 goal in last 5 halves played … hope they get back on track … looking like they are 3rd best team in B1G

Daigle & Banks = weak links. Daigle still trying to dribble first. Tried to dribble through 3 defenders & lost it when we had a nice build up going. Giving us nothing in the middle. Banks is who she is.
We can beat these guys. GO RU!

Initially I was disappointed but I did not realize NW ranking. Good tie on the road.

Amazing game of soccer. Second half was so fun to watch. These are the best 2 teams in the Big Ten and wouldn’t be surprised to meet them in the final.
Meg unreal saves today, 3 that are easily the top 3 of our season so far. Highlight reel stuff

We take too many touches. 3 touches and sometimes 4, seems every time we are waiting for defenders to close in before passing. Other B1G teams they take 1 touch and pass it. Inexperience maybe but can be frustrating. That’s the difference between last year and this year. Still, a fun team to root for and with PSU loss today, conf is wide open

A win would have obviously have been better but we'll take the tie coupled with the Penn State loss at home. Gotta beat Purdue on Sun.

Tiernan & Daigle prime offenders with too many touches. Yes, Meg saved the day.

There are many problems with the offense the main thing is he(O'Neill) has reverted to his former offense where it was fine when you had Amirah up top but still way too many times Riley has the ball with no support and we can't mount an attack because all our girls are back we have to become more offensive and I do agree many times we need to make quicker passes and spread the field more; I will have to rewatch last nights game

Its readily clear this seasons team lacks the offenssive fire power as compated to last year.As such the margin for error is small and losse/ties occur.

Well we lost our two top scorers in Amirah and Frankie so that is a lot to replace; I believe there is enough fire power I just don't think it is being utilized properly

I think the problem with the offensive starts with the high pressure that teams are putting on the RU defense. The D is not handling this well at all and has become disorganized and ineffective. As a result the midfielders are dropping back, which makes them ineffective at starting the offense. Teams then pack their box, forcing RU to come down the sidelines and try long, low percentage, crosses.

RU likes to build from the back (which is normally good), but if teams keep so much pressure up high, we need our defenders to quickly hit the pivots rather than pass sideline to sideline. Quick attacks from passes to the midfield, even from punts, will force other teams to adapt.

Think you've got something there UMRU. We've struggled with high pressure in the past.

Because we hold the ball too long!!! Like was said above we always seem to take 2-3 touches instead of 1 touch passing; We also still go back too much and he has to figure out what the hell to do with the back line I think Emma is still hurting and Kassidy as we have stated has been a liability that play or shall I say lack of a play on the Northwestern goal was just basic soccer 101 and she just watched her girl score

Not looking for an argument but only offering an alternative opinion.

what we saw was an issue that every team is facing playing NU. They , to me, have a newer very fast surface that everyone, but them, has problems adapting to. Again , to me, those missed passes are under hit balls that is caused by fear of hitting or harder and have it run off.
So this year in six home games , prior to us, there have been zero goals scored at home against them. And no they are not facing cram puffs. They have at home beaten number 6 Stanford and 19 Xavier.

again , to me , we are a much different team , on grass, at Yurcak. And , yes, this is a seriously good team , in all aspects, that except for that indefensible error caused header we held scoreless

I have no evidence but I think our ladies are playing exceptionally tight rather than enjoying the game. And yes several are trying to do it all by themselves.

and no I don’t know what do do about Kassidy. All those grad transfer center mids are flawed and the trust is not there to play them. So it’s Kass or Adriana ( who doesn’t offer the athleticism ) and we simply will need to live with that. And rest assured our opponents will attacking that left side repeatedly …..especially on counters

anyway that’s my opinion and we have played three ranked teams now the picture should be clear of who and what we are

I didn't know anything about the turf but I 100% agree with you about them playing tight; Now remember we have only 2 seniors playing but most of the girls playing all played last year; We only have 4 freshman on the roster and on Allie Post is really seeing anytime; I definitely agree with you about the girls pressing and unfortunately I think the one pressing the most is Riley as she is trying to do too much herself; As you say I don't know what the answer is at center back; I wish he tried other people early on I liked the one freshman Naiya the little she was in but I don't know what her true position is; I also still don't think Emma is 100% and I think that affects the defense but Kassidy is definitely cost us a few goals and a number of other near misses but overall I think they really have to get these girls to make one touch quicker passes and stop keeping the ball on their feet

The answer was Courtney Ruedt but for some reason Mike didn't play her & she transfered to Columbia where she is a starting CB.

Agree. I mentioned it early in the thread.

They struggled with touch.

It is not so much the number of touches, it is the purpose of the touches (BTW, I did not see the Purdue match, so maybe things changed). The defense is working sideline to sideline with their passes, which is great if you can build from the back. With the high pressure this is not possible - they need to start playing their passes quickly up field to midfield. You beat pressure like this with quick attacks because you should have the numbers on offense.

The other way to beat high pressure, ironically, is to pass back to the keeper. Often this forces the offense into messy shapes that are easily beaten. EPL teams do this all the time these days.

The game changes - my fear is that O'Neill does not.
