BB Recruiting Noah Fernandes visiting RU

if Noah comes

PG - Noah
SG - Cam
F - Gavin
F - Mag
C - Cliff (assume he comes back)

G - Simpson
F/C - Wolf
F - Hyatt (if he stays...)
F/C - Chol
F - Ndongo
G - Davis

not bad... would love another veteran Big Man
Love it.
I'm hoping we see Ndongo or Mag as small ball 5's
and IF Ndongo can play some 3 (or we get a transfer), Griffiths as a 2 at times

IMO, Paul is back but he’s playing the 4. He has the size, can rebound, and will create some interesting match up problems. I could be wrong but I’m also the guy who said that Simpson should be starting instead of Hyatt when Mag went down and was told I didn’t know the game. Haha.

Dont call me crazy but I think our defense will be better next year than this year...

I hope Paul comes back to have a veteran on team but he cant play the 4.
Only 2 or 3 at best. (dont mean to be mean...) but Our defense is better without him on the floor...
He had hard time with rotations. Pike's defense is all about rotation/help defense. 1 player is late, it leaves guys open because we are 1 or 2 steps late...

I agree Paul is not a great defender against quicker guards. That won’t be an issue at the 4. He’s a better defender than Hyatt FWIW

Against, small, quick guards? I can see that.
sorry, if Cliff stays, we will have better defense.

Simpson & Wolf will have 1 year under their belt on help pressure defense.
recruits coming in are huge upgrade on speed and quickness compared to guys who are transferring out.
We all have been drooling on Gavin's offense but I think his defense will really surprise us.

Elite 8 - shortest starter
Miami - Nigel Pack 6'0"
Texas - Tyrese Hunter 6'0"
Creighton - Ryan Nembhard 6'0"
San Diego State - Lamont Butler 6'2"
Uconn - Tristen Newton 6'5"
Gonzaga - Nolan Hickman 6'2"
K State - Markquis Nowel 5'7"
Florida Atlantic - Bryan Greenlee 6'0"
Darrion Trammell started for SDSU at 5’10”. This would be an excellent addition with a good chance to start. Derek and Paul will still get minutes and as we saw this year, we need more depth when injuries hit.

why?

dude shoots over 40% from 3s

imagine what this will do...

Cam, Gavin, Noah outside.... (these guys will shoot over 40% from 3s)
Slashing Mag.
Down low Cliff. (Cliff could have a field day)
Because that was the change he made taking over the program. He chose length over lateral quickness. I realize Jacob was short.

Fernandes has some Tyson Walker type moves, just not nearly as quick as Walker, but more crafty and in charge as a lead guard. Walker is wired to score, Fernandes is a playmaking person on and off the ball.......he would immediately upgrade Gavin's and Cam production in shot attempts, just on transition alone.....

Gavin's ability to move without the ball with Fernandes, oozes potential freedom and lots of shot attempts.....Same with Ndongo as well.

If Paul is here as a fifth year senior, he’s going to start.

And this creates a problem for RU in order to move forward......the most productive players should play the most minutes and earn a starting role, not based on past experience or performances. Every quality roster likely has 7 starters on it, but only 5 can start. If Mulcahy is about winning and the team, it won't matter if he starts or not. If there is a better guard/player, Mulcahy can contribute off the bench.

This is a 35+ game season and peaks and valleys. RU isn't in a position to automatically start Mulcahy, if he returns. He will or should have to increase his performances and play more consistent basketball in order to "start".

I thought that as well but then realized that many of his first options went elsewhere. Alvarado, McClung, Tai Strickland, Bensley Joseph and others.

I'm sure Pikiell is not looking for 6'7 guards. Plus, Mulcahy and McConnell grew to that height after enrolling. They were tall at 6'5 and 6'4 but not giant guards

We’re coming off an all time tournament performance from a guard that is like 4 inches shorter than this guy. Yes, I know there are outliers, but at least this player has proven he can get it done at the college level.

I love Simpsons game, but I don’t think he’s ready to be a starting PG for a good basketball team. He will still get his minutes. He can be a great 6th man next season.

Why would he potentially not play 32 minutes per game? You figure he slots in for Caleb's minutes. Even if Paul returns there is still going to be plenty of time to go around.

I dont see 32 minutes if Paul returns...Hyatt hasnt left yet either..

Dont get me wrong I would take right now

I’m just gonna put this out there, but looking at a lot of his advanced defensive numbers, he would’ve been pretty easily our worst defensive player this year.

Pikiell rewards experience and loyalty to the Rutgers basketball program.Mulcahy will start bur his minutes as the point guard should be reduced.

I don’t know how you people are thinking this guy is getting 32 minutes a game. At UMass, he shot a similar percentage on 1 attempt less per game than what Cam did at Loyola. Meanwhile he’s listed as 5 inches shorter and 30 pounds lighter and is a worse defender. Cam got 31.5 MPG this year. And especially if Paul comes back, the 2023-24 guard room will be a lot deeper and better than this past year.

put it back.....watch film and assess. Statistics arent going to tell a defensive story. Now if you have PPP when he is on the floor I'll listen.

Spencer’s 3P shooting took a significant jump from Patriot to the B1G. And Fernandes isn’t all of a sudden gonna get 0.7 more SPG in the B1G and get to 2 steals PG like Cam had this year. Cam is still a better shooter and defender and bigger. So I don’t see how he gets more minutes than Cam did this past year.

Because we had poor offense this year, and he can do some basic things we really had trouble with, like bringing the ball up the court with any type of pressure, getting the offense initiated, penetrating to the basket, and making good passes. But other than that he doesn’t help us much . . .

Noah sounds like almost a perfect fit for our biggest needs (assuming Cliff stays)!! Come to RU buddy!
Plus he was coached by Frank Martin last year, right? That guy always looked … how to say… tightly wound and likely to be a taskmaster. Coming to visit Pike and RU I have to think going to be a little refreshing in this regard.
If he chooses to go elsewhere hopefully we get someone similar.

5'11"? Are there other Big Ten guards with similar size?
How is his defense going to play in the BT?

Is HC Pike going to bury a sophomore Simpson for a 1 year rental?
Team needs offense.Simpson still hasnt developed a shot outside 15 feet.be nuts not to give him a starting position

I'm not convinced on Simpson's dribbling skills yet to be true leading PG for Rutgers. I think he is better PG than Paul towards end of the season but Noah is huge upgrade from Simpson.

fyi: Pike never said he is going for lengthy players... lol...
Pike recruited who is available to him. No offense to our current and past guys but if Pike had the option to pick up 4 or 5 stars like he can now, Derek, Wolf, Mag, wouldn't be on our team.
I remember him saying most of the time players gets rated based on their offense skills and not defensive skills. Because he couldnt get those 4/5stars guys, he picked up guys who are 4/5 stars in his defense ratings. Thats why we have team full of guys who can fly on the defensive end and cover. We are able to compete at the top level even with players who were mostly 3 stars because according to Pike, based on their defense, they were 4/5 stars.

Rieber, Palm, Paul, they were brought in for offense than defense.

I expect Paul to play more of a point forward. Expect the ball in his hands a lot. Pike trusts him, I wouldn’t expect a big change. Simpson will get a lot of time on the he ball too but Paul has been Pikes guy for 4 years and when he is healthy he is an all Big Ten player.

Gavin’s defense could determine how many minutes Cam ends up getting. Cam was a defensive liability against a bunch of B1G teams. If Gavin isn’t 100% ready defensively it could end up being Gavin or Cam.

hmmmm..... i think you missed towards end of the season, where the ball was in Simpson's hands most of the time and Paul was playing SG/Wing.
