Norries Post game interview

Stop caring about what they think--a coach needs to make a statement that is for the good of his program. We don't want a coach here that doesn't consider Ped a rival now.

Do you understand what the word rival actually means?

I went to Navy. Air Force is NOT a rival. It's an important game, but it ain't Army. For many years, Army and Navy could have combined squads and lost to Air Force by 3 scores. But no matter how much Air Force was dying for either game to be a big "rivalry" game, it never was. Why? Cause Army is our rival. Period.

It takes two to tango...

Yeh I's went 2 skool so I does know whut rivalry meens. A coach needs to lead his team to believe in itself and that it belongs in the B1G leagues no matter how poorly a game may go.

Which is fine and dandy but irrelevant to the idea that this is a "rivalry" game.

Of course he needs to prepare them in a way that says we belong.

The question your kvetching over was about "rivalry." He answered it correctly. It's not. Even if we wish it was.

You're entitled to your opinion.

I thought your coach did fine in the presser. Clearly not as polished of a speaker as a lot of head coaches but he did a good job. I think the "bizzare" comments are because he was basically calling on the reporters to ask their question putting the reporter on the spot. I'd say that's an atypical PC but not bizzare.

"What's your name?"

"Puddin’ Tame - ask me again and I'll tell you the same!"

Penn St. is not a rival. Maybe if we stopped jacking this game up bigger than others we might play better.

It's a conference game. Next.

Pathetic that we are now trying to down play this game. If someone takes a crap at PSU there is a thread about it. It's ridiculous to now say that Rutgers doesn't consider PSU a rival. Last time I checked Flood wasn't running around coming up with acronyms for any school except PSU. Yes, I get that PSU still views us as little brother but I don't want my coach ever saying that PSU is anything but a special game.

Speak for yourself. I'm not downplaying the lack of effort or execution.

And if you consider it a rivalry game, God Bless.

But if nobody outside of a few thousand rabid RU fans consider it a rivalry, guess what? It's not a rivalry game.

We're fans of Rutgers. This is our team. What do I care if a fan of another team doesn't consider RU vs. PSU a special game. Maybe you're hung up on the "rivalry" word. Whatever it's called the fact remains that this game means more to this fan base than any other game on our schedule. And, by the way, I don't use the word rival ever. I think it's stupid. But, when our HC (acting or otherwise) is asked about PSU I have an issue when he makes it sounds like just another game.

He just got his as handed to him by a team that was at best supposed to be a decided underdog and at worst our on field equal. We were non-competitive.

What's he supposed to say? Act like Pete Carroll losing the Super Bowl?

Ahh..gee whiz guys...you're right...I'm not gonna sleep tonight cause 1-1 PSU just cleaned our clocks in front of 110k and in primetime on BTN.

Come on. If he wants to keep the room, he has to downplay the game.

His responsibility is to the team, not assuaging fans desire to make the game more important than any other on the schedule. He does that and he loses the team for the season. He would be telling them that they lost the primary game on the schedule in week 3. When we have games with MSU, OSU, Michigan, Wisky and Nebraska remaining.

What do you mean "He just got his as handed to him by a team that was at best supposed to be a decided underdog and at worst our on field equal"? Who had Ped as a decided underdog last night?

Anyway, you're still missing my point, or maybe I need to clarify. I don't like the way Norries answered the question by framing it as one team having a lot more wins based on intermittent play over many decades-and most games more than 20 years ago--so therefore it's not a "rivalry". A better answer would be along the lines of saying it's another important conference game against a division rival and we need to play much tougher...

Wilson was thrown into that role very quickly this week. I don't think he was used to the spotlight.

I've seen - and worked - my share of press conferences, including Super Bowl press conferences. I thought Wilson was gold, under the circumstances. Hell, at this point I'd keep him on permanently just to do post-game.

But I did find myself wishing that someone like Polite would have said "what"...
