Tired legs. Two games in three days for a team that is short handed is not a recipe for success. I know Indiana played Saturday. But you can’t expect Corey to carry us every game. No Mike or Eugene really hurts us

yeah if they got tired 2nd half that would be one thing, they were beat in their dreams last night....

Then we better start getting in better condition. Because Indiana played Michigan St. on Saturday. They didn't need an excuse to crush us.

We have a very thin roster and limited playmakers though. Corey shot 1-11. We have no one else who can step up

I agree with the announcers ....the one bright spot was Freeman
he had 13pts and 8 REBs 2 assts 2 steals...

Our entire bench went 2-7
our starters went 11-45
we shot 24%

Very frustrating

When you can't score over 50 points, you can't expect to win. Although Wisconsin-Green Bay managed to win that way for years. First half averaged less than one point a minute, not one basket, one point !
Amazing how we manage to shoot consistently bad and not even average. Do our guys actually practice ? It was a back to back game, but no excuse for not showing up at the beginning. When Corey and Gio have bad nights, this is what happens. Most of the other guys still only score 4-6 points, so no help.
It's a shoot bad, look bad situation and we're stuck with it for now.

Its a team that fielded 3 P5 caliber players tonight. Need 2 more years of Pike recruits. Then the judgements will mean something.

Rutgers fans have watched too many of these nightmare type games where the team can't score which results in a lack of energy and the defense disappearing as the scoring margin between the teams widens.Indiana is a mediocre team that had to travel to New Jersey after playing on Saturday. They didn't have tired legs as shown by their 3 point shooting and the way their offense was run .In contrast Sanders,Baker and Freeman were missing in action for most of the game and there were no other players on the team who stepped up to put points on the score board.

It seems like Sanders is either not in it, is going through a tough streak, or he is going through life issues that every human faces. His body language is telling or something, whatever it is. I am not make any judgments or trying to start gossip. Far from it. Just what my eyeballs are seeing.

Sa played some good defense tonight. Our whole team is dealing with confidence issues. To us fans on here we see a division athlete who is probably liked or envied by most on campus. Personally, these kids are still kids who spend the majority of the time trying to improve, and little time to be a college student. Do what regular kids can do on campus. I hope they can get some swagger back. Looking at how this season has gone, I am sure it changes next game.

its not going to change..this is the same Sanders for the past 3 game...one NBA type game....2 middle of the road games and one horrific game in 4 game stretches...so RU will get this next year too if he comes back. Will this help the program to go through this again?

I don't want to hear any excuses. We were favored by a point and Indiana played on Saturday night and had to fly into NJ. We were out off it from the start. I would rather see Luke Nathan play than some of our regulars. Thiam once again looked like he had no confidence and Corey is one of the least consistent players that I have ever seen. This was hard to watch tonight. We need kids that play with heart every time they step on the court. We had very little ball movement tonight. How many times did we keep running a weave or dribbling the ball too much and than force a shot at the end of 30 seconds.

Give me a break about tired this and too many games in a few days. Indiana is a 12-13 team coming in and beat our brains in. Our kids looked like we had fed them Castor Oil and played like it.

agree with the last two posts...gosh the bar is so low in this program that excuse get made all the time why a team lost by 20 plus while showing no pulse from opening tip and could not make a basket to save their lives. Listen it was ugly and unacceptable...and its actually not part of the process to be this bad against an Indiana that didnt play all that well on offense. I will say that their defense is much improved. Miller coached circles around Pike tonight with his defense.

Indiana's defense was superb. We had no answers. Never saw so many possessions where we got no shots off until 2 seconds left on clock. Indiana will be top 25 squad next year especially if they get commitment from Langford. Miller is excellent coach.

A few thoughts on tonight’s debacle. This is what happens with a depleted roster when your starting lineup and I mean all 5 do not mentally come ready to play and then you start missing incredibly easy shots. You lose confidence and Mike and Eugene are not there to bring energy and to come in and actually score. Instead we got Jake, Souf, Bullock , Sa and Shaquille on the court and you try to score. I understand why Coach subbed out the first team, but it is almost impossible to come back with that unit on the floor. Deshawn missed so many easy shots and he took a more difficult shot than was necessary that it got the team out of sync. Corey did not seem to have the energy to put us on his back although he was still playing defense but something was off. Issa had probably his poorest outing so that left Geo to try to get some points . When shots do not fall there is no where else to turn. The team got sloppy , lazy, and totally out of rhythm.

Coach was frustrated but part of the problem is that his offense is not running anything that teams are having a hard time stopping. We do not feed the post to Duke or Shaquille or Sa, or even try to play inside out, and even when we do , they just cannot make a simple move and convert like Shaquille who was literally almost 2 feet from the basket. Our offense features a lot of one on one with little ball movement . If you watched Indiana ‘s sets, their guys were in motion, with hard cuts , and easy cuts to the hole where a simple pass resulted in a layup. With our offense, once the other team’s defends the ball being swung , we get stuck and the ball ends up in Corey or Geo’s hands with 10 or less on the clock and a bad shot is forced up. Coach has to tweak his offense a little as the double stack has been scouted and we are running nothing else to make any adjustments.
I
One other thought, Indiana basically had only 2 players that could possibly hurt us, Johnson and Morgan . Coach spoke on the post game that they were supposed to try and take them away. Instead they both got the ball wherever they wanted and shot wide open threes all night. Either a terrible job by our players or by the coaching staff. Coach did not get his players ready to play and Miller did. Both teams came off of heartbreaking losses on Saturday with 1 day prep and with weary legs but Indiana was fine and we looked as bad as we have all year. On top of that , this was an easily beatable Indiana team which makes the performance even more frustrating .

I think this game was more indicative of our team of Matt Bullock, Jake Dadika, and Souf being in with considerable minutes, and Luke Nathan playing some too. The injuries on a team with our depth and quality of players, is detrimental. The Purdue game we just played over our heads and gave every last bit we had, which is why it's such a shame we lost due to the Free Throw discrepancy. If we had won that game with basically a team of walk-ons, it would have been the greatest upset in Rutgers history. Unfortunately I think today is how it's gonna be (hopefully not as bad) until Gene and Mike come back. Hopefully in time for Senior day and then the B1G tourney. So Important to win a game at MSG, 2 would be awesome.

Issa was terrible and threw some lazy passes. BB IQ not good with him.

17, 18, 19, 20 year olds tired??? Remember getting up at 7AM, playing all day, short break for lunch, then continue to play until 6 that same day. Then do it again the next day, and the next, and the next.
Cory's 30 points was the abnormal not the normal. They have to bring it every game, on both ends of the floor. When they don't(especially against teams like Indiana, Illinois, Hartford, Stonybrook), it really comes down to one thing; HEART

There are only so many ways that fans can rehash the ups and downs of a team that lacks talent .Most times its woeful shooting which is more than enough to result in a losing performance.Other times like against Indiana and Illinois the team showed low energy and complete confusion in running offensive sets.In either case the end result is another loss .

Until Rutgers puts on the court multiple players that can shoot/score on a consistent basis including bench players ,the disappointment will continue unabated for years to come. The B1G isn't a league where MAC level talent has any chance of being successful .There can't be any more wasted scholarships .

If you mean , he did not get his players mentally ready to play 2 days after Purdue, just like Archie Miller got his guys ready 2 days after Michigan State and have to travel, both coming off tough losses, you will get no argument from me nor the Coach as he admitted blame on his post game .
If you mean his offense is being scouted and the double stack set is not working and teams are making it harder for us to get good looks with reasonable amount of time on the shot clock, I can partially agree with you.
However, Miller although he is down Davis, had his 2 best players, Morgan and Johnson shoot well whereas Coach had Deshawn , Sa and Shaquille missing every shot within 5 feet of the basket. Then unfortunately he could not go to Mike and Eugene for instant offfense and energy. He had to turn to the second lineup that is offensively challenged and there were no where else to turn for points. Any coach where his big 3 of Corey, Geo, and Deshawn do not shoot well or bring it mentally and physically would have been whipped. Out coached in your context is just stupid and more likely out talented. If Morgan was on Rutgers last night , we likely would have won by 10-15. When you do not have low post scorers that can score and you are turning to walk ones for help , it is not purely coaching. You should know bettter but you have an agenda that is just stupid.
There is unlikely many like you that would not want Coach Pikiell as our coach. You can make a criticism of how the offense is run, but to say outcoached every time, even when we played with 5 top 20 teams toe to toe, is where you lose all credibility.

Miller outcoached Pike because the Indiana defense was very sharp from the get go in shutting anything easy down for RU. RU wasnt getting open. I agree that the RU players didnt show up mentally..that is on both them and coach. However Pikiell did very little to adjust to Indiana's defense. I saw the same offense run time and time again of running the shot clock down and then someone taking a low percentage shot usually Sanders. I realize the options are limited but I just question what is being run out there. Miller was impressive in all aspects of the game. Pikiell outcoached Painter the other day, last night he was outcoached.

Outcoached? I don’t see it! I agree it’s on Pikes to get his team ready to play! But I would argue that Pikes & staff has gotten everything possible out of this team. I agree, I would like some better sets on Offense, but when you can’t make shots even when your open that’s not a coaching issue, it’s a talent issue! When Corey is hitting shots the coach looks great but when he has stinkers like last night it’s the opposite. I look at the defense they play even when they can’t set it up because they miss so many shots. As much as Corey can have spectacular games he has been extremely inconsistent. Pikes is in a tough situation because he has nobody else that can score! The fact that this team beat Seton Hall Mich State, and Purdue is a miracle!

We got out coached.
Pikiell continues to high ball screen for Sanders & Geo knowing that the screen defender will double Sanders & Geo. Sanders and Geo do not feed/trust the roll man. Screen defender does not respect the roll man.

Result: Sanders & Geo pull dribble out. Start the offense all over again, usually with less than 10 seconds on the shot clock.

Infuriating.

This. There's a second part to that set that is not being executed, for a number of reasons. Happened many times last night.

I agree! So infuriating! Would love to see some creativity on the offensive end. I think Corey does what he wants on the floor! A ton of dribbling and everyone stands around waiting to see what he will do. Nobody else on the floor thinks offensively. They just get the ball & want to get it back to Corey. This makes it very easy for opposing coaches to scout.

I found myself yelling at the TV screen and then said, "Why am I getting upset?" This is the team's MO. That's why they're not going to finish above .500. With Mike and Eugene out we just don't have the talent to score consistently when Corey is off, which these days seems to be every other game. Sadly, Thiam's game has gone into the dumpster on both ends of the floor. He really needs to go into serious S&C this summer and work on his game. He hasn't learned yet that if you're going to shoot from 3 point land you have to square your shoulders when you shoot. He's just too inconsistent. I love Geo, but in some ways the poor kid is hitting a wall.

Am I disappointed in last night's results? Of course. But I'm not surprised. Onto the next game.

Hard to argue with all the complaints about the lack of creativity on offense. Seems like the same "play" over and over. The funny is that this is a terrible shooting team that insists on taking contested jump shots late in the clock. Not a recipe for success. And the only thing rarer than seeing a ball passed into the paint, is seeing it come back out.

Re, Issa: ntirely diffrent player going left vs right. Going right there are things he can do utilizing his height, going left he’s a turnover waiting too happen.

Freeman didn't show up until late in the first half. He wasn't closing out on shooters, and they were draining threes over him. He couldn't handle the ball. He wasn't coming in for help defense. He couldn't hit chippy layups. He was taking ill-advised shots.

Sanders/Baker/Thiam were harassed on the outside, and couldn't find any breathing room. High pressure defense on the guards well out past the arc - and they had no answer for it, constantly running around help defenders and trying to find someone to pass to that could score the ball.

At the 3:51 mark in the first half, we were down 24-12 and the stats for our starters were:
Baker: 5 pt (2-4 FG, 0-1 FT), 2 rb, 1 blk, 1 PF
Doucoure: 2 pt (1-2 FG), 3 rb, 1 TO, 2 PF
Sanders: 1 pt (0-3 FG, 1-2 FT), 3 rb, 1 ast, 1 TO
Freeman: 1 pt (0-5 FG, 1-2 FT), 1 rb, 1 stl, 2 TO, 1 PF
Thiam: 0 pt (0-4 FG), 1 rb, 1 blk

That's about as flat as you can come out of the locker room.

I almost left with 14 minutes to go because it was evident at that point nothing was going to change in the tempo of the game.

I didn't because because of my alumni loyalty, and my love for the crystal clear waters of the Raritan.

If someone told me that the "most important" player on the team shot less than .250 from three, and couldn't use one half of the court when driving, would you believe that team could win games?

I don't know what to say.

Freeman was horrific in the first 10 minutes...I was screaming GET HIM OUT NOW repeatedly and I usually do not yell during games...he was that awful. I didnt want him to come back in at all...when he was removed the team played a little better. He was clearly hurting the team on both ends

Agreed. He was out of control. He's trying to do too much to impress scouts etc

In fairness to Freeman, he brought it big time in the first few minutes against Purdue and got the game off to the right start, unlike two days later.

My concern is that I have seen this woeful looking offense with previous head coaches which tells me that the lack of talent drives what happens on the court.Opponents know that Rutgers has so few shooting/scoring options so they set up their defense to overplay against Sanders and Baker .Its smart coaching strategy on their part .How many more consecutive losing seasons must fans endure before Rutgers actually puts on the court scoring threats at every starting position?
