NY Times - college/university art museums

TX thanks for the article. Zimmerli has been at the forefront of on campus museums for more than two generations (opened in 1966). It's a 70,000 square foot teaching museum with a permanent collection of 60,000 artifacts, drawings, paintings and sculpture.

I believe the recent donation of the private collection to expand the already significant Soviet-era non-conformist artwork and related pieces is a big step in raising Zimmerli's profile and the monetary value of its collection.

it'd be great to hear that Rutgers were planning to incorporate a new building into the redevelopment of the College ave. campus

The Zimmerli building is pretty interesting actually. It's built in the burnt out remains of Ballantine Gym, which burned down about 100 years ago. You can actually find hints of Ballantine's brickwork if you walk around the outside of the museum. Not only that, but Zimmerli's art storage room is the old pool of Ballantine, complete with shallow and deep end, pool tiles, and grates.

The museum connects directly into Voorhees Hall, which was once it's own, stand alone library. (Many of its windows have been filled in, but it was the University's main library after Kirkpatrick.) Voorhees Hall of course, is now physically connected to the art library.
