NY Times on a bad loss and the big picture

It is not a good article, IMO.

Its shows that its pure math and luck (which it is). Rutgers is located next to NYC with many eye balls (TV money). Every school makes more money off RU, gets better exposure to "fertile" HS recruiting, blocks out the ACC and we'll get a check at some point.

Right, the alternative would be certain death. But like I told my co-wokers who are OSU, Mich and BC alum, "You rather be the loser at the winner's party, than the winner at the loser's party."

In essence, the article was all about everyone else in the B1G winning, and we are just there at the party standing in the corner watching everyone else having a good time.

Basically, everyone gets to leverage our resources and what we get in return is to say that we are part of a big-time conference. The conference does not want us to win. In fact, they are more than happy to stack the deck against us. The B1G is headquartered in Chicago for a reason. They are a Midwestern conference and they aren't planning on changing that. They are using us for our east-coast resources - recruiting grounds, moneyed alumni and cable tv dollars.

No, we get to fund our Athletic Department and at least have a punchers chance to someday make a return trip to the top 25 in football. Can you imagine even trying to compete in any sport if we were stuck in the AAC with AAC money?

You mean like Houston of the AAC (with AAC money) beating FSU in the Peach Bowl...

Why would the conference not want Rutgers to win? You don't think the conference would LOVE to have a big time brand a stones throw away from the biggest media market in the world? You guys or going to take your initial licks...but in the long run you'll be fine, it's really just unfortunate timing that this couldn't have happened in the later Schaino years when you may have had more statement wins right from the start. If the Rutgers administration can spend the influx of B1G money wisely and upgrade the facilities, I think you guys will see a much different (better) program in the future.

No, because schools like PSU are jealous of our success. They are doing everything they can to undermine us. If you have a successful program, 30 minutes away from NYC and Philly, why would you drive 5 hours to Penn State?

best quote:
"But that is, admittedly, secondary. What matters is this: If you believe 78-0 makes Rutgers unworthy of the Big Ten, you are looking at the wrong scoreboard."

I'm not sure whether you sound paranoid or more like a crybaby. Maybe just completely out of it.

What exactly has the conference done to keep us from winning? We've done it all to ourselves (lousy Flood hire, mostly) and the only thing the conference has done is gotten up to full power after a down period.

Ah, the exception that proves the rule. Or do you think we would instead become the Boise St of CFB if not for our B1G affiliation?

Regarding Houston, a) We're not located in Texas and b) talk to me after they lose Herman (which they will because they can't afford to keep him...unless they move to the Big 12).

Good article. Obviously we don't want to read about our shortcomings on the field but it addresses the criticism from the uninformed about what Rutgers brings to the league.

And also reminds us that we have been successful in football in the not-too-distant past, even though there were those who said we never would be. There's a lot of upside on The Banks.

It should have mentioned the similar academic mission as other Big Ten state schools.. similar research levels.. shared borders.. enhancement to shared academic assets among Big Ten schools.. how Penn State membership in the Big Ten raised its academic profile... lots of not-sports and non-money related things to consider to show we belong... but the gist of it was correct... wrong scoreboard.

HUH? "Jealous of our success?" WTF?
Oh, and the answer is to play in front of 100,000-plus fans in a place with a long football tradition. Despite what we have, we can't offer that.
Jealous. Wow.

The paranoia and conspiracy theories astound me. Nobody is "undermining" us. We now have all of the advantages of being in the best all-around group of public universities in the nation, and the only "price" is not getting a full share of revenues for a few years. And even the partial share is still more than we would have had, and we get to welcome real teams with big-time reputations into our stadium every fall. Oh, yeah, and a great basketball league, the best wrestling there is and a little something called BTN. All ours to enjoy and use to build our program.

Undermining us. Please. It's called competition. You compete on the field, and you compete off of it. If we can hack it, we'll thrive. If not, we'll get eaten alive.

Rutgers brought all these riches to the rich kids' club, and after everyone else has taken their cut for a few years, they'll let Rutgers eat.

Of course the leadership of the conference would be very happy with that. But the Ohio States and Michigan of the conference are not going to hold the door for us. We need to assert ourselves. I think it will happen sooner rather than later.

First you get into the country club, then you steadily work toward getting named Man of the Year.

They were doing pretty damn well without us. Are we bringing them more money than they would have otherwise received--absolutely. But there is this (small) matter of buying our way into the partnership (or "rich kids' club" if you prefer). People seem to forget we were negotiating our way in from a position of weakness, not strength.

From a football perspective, PSU joined the B1G conference at one of its peak times, the '94 team was one of the best teams of all times...if you ask most PSU fans they will
Also say the conference has it out for us and doesn't want us to win...BUT this conspiracy theory (outside of some rediculous game changing referee mistakes recently) has no basis in reality. In actuality the conference affiliation has really boosted the profile of our non revenue sports teams (only men's basketball has been lagging with conference affiliation)

I still hold out the belief that with the right funding and spending wisely, Rutgers will have a top notch sports program in all sports not just football...and at that time the real rivalry with PSU will be borne as it will be an all sports rivalry not just football.
