OC Drew Mehringer Game Week Press Conference - Michigan

Get the ball to Martin and Hicks no?

Hicks has dropped on the depth chart. Martin has carried the ball 79 times already this season with only 13, understandably, coming against OSU. So in 3 games (didn't play vs Wash) he carried 22 times per game. What more do you want?

We know you don't like this coaching staff, it's painfully obvious, so hopefully Flood will get a high school job somewhere and you can follow him and his staff there.

It's nearly impossible to run with 8 or 9 people in the box with no real threat of a pass.
You forgot no threat of read/option either, DE's and linebackers have zero contain responsibility.
Imagine playing against Pat White that way?

Patton dropped the one good pass CL threw...ok DB made a good play but a good WR still manages to hang on. Patton wasn't even that open

I cannot understand how our returning receivers cannot even catch one pass in an entire game. I know Laviano threw several passes at the feet of our receivers but where are Patton, Agoudosi, Tsimis and Flanagan. These guys were supposed to step it up this season and I really see very little from any of them. It seems like Harris, a redshirt freshman is the only guy getting open. I would think that players with experience should be able to get open once in a while. How hard can that be?

I wasn't too keen on Hicks returning kicks but maybe he's one of the few who can catch the ball? Seemed slow but it was OSU and he had no blocking.

Ffs our offense SUCKED with the current roster and that was even when they were recruited for the old style of offense. Now that they're playing in a different kind of offense for which many of them are not suited OF COURSE the offense is even worse. What did people expect???

D can't put 8 or 9 in the box when you have 4 WR's lined up out wide. This should be our formation every time, run or pass play. Agudosi goes wide to the side of the shorter CB, Harris wide on the other, max 7 in the box and the safeties may need to cheat a little if there is a big height or speed mismatch. More lanes for our quality rb's.

Our offense is boring because we don't have a QB. Our WR's are below par (especially without Grant) as is our line play. Our RB's are adequate.

Even with the below level talent (outside of RB's) our O has, a good QB fit for this offense would make a huge difference. This offense is very fun to watch, provided you have a QB. Even one who is run first and capable of doing so would open up the passing game. Put someone dynamic back there and see how much better the other units look.

Agree,
But as long as ball security and no interceptions are the number one goal of the staff, this is what you get...that includes no pitches, those are potential fumbles.

The issue - obviously - he MAKES those throws over and over again in practice. Receivers also make the plays in practice. The other issue is, well, they don't during games. I'm sure we're going to start to see more of Oden as the year moves along It IS only Game 4 so even I'm not going to get too upset about him still being in there just yet lol!
We do not throw those balls... not with any frequency. We do not throw enough go routes or posts. We do not throw the fades to the sidelines. We throw ZERO seam routes for the TE.

Those are the routes that open up the running game. They stretch the field vertically and put pressure on the safeties to stay home and not come up in run support.

What we throw are bubble screens and drags and an occasional quick slant. We attempt to throw some flares.. but they always miss. One of the easiest throws there is...routinely missed.

I'd also love us to bait a DB in on that bubble screen because they are all just jumping it now. Let them bite on a pump and then toss it over them before the safety can come up... though safeties have bit on that right away as well.. so go over the top.

Basically... seize the initiative. Force the D in reaction mode. Stop letting them do what they want to do and have us have to react. Punish them for being over aggressive and run blitzing and so on. It is not rocket science. I know I sound like an idiot for stating the obvious but that is why this is so frustrating. If we tried these things and failed.. that could be blamed on talent.. but it really looks like we are just not trying to be deceptive in the least.

And I'd love to eliminate that drag route on 3rd and long where the guy is covered 5 yards down the field and he ends up being the target. Just take that option away from Laviano... he goes to it way too often and even if he hits it he doesn't get us the 1st down. Just get rid of it... or do it on 1st down.

" we exchange no INT's for sacks, throw always and not even really trying to make plays for fear of the outcome."

Zap hits it on the head. The New staff has done a lot well I think have this thing set up in the future. That being said new coaches many times have blinders and stubborn spots. I think if she auto had to do it over again he would not have fourth Schwenk out in year one for cubit. We are now having very young coaches Who in some ways are feeling backed into a corner by the median fans to shake up the quarterback race and are holding steady to try to show steadfastness. We are living through some growing pains with the staff which is to be expected. They are knowledgeable of course but the tenet That they know best in all cases and there is no basis for anyone to question that, is just wrong and our own history since 2000 shows that in many regards Remember how much Schiano try to force beckford it as a linebacker and promote him as a leader of the defense. It just didn't work. Beckford later had success as a straightahead situational rusher, but managing the game at the linebacker position just did not work for him and Schiano waited for that way longer than an experienced coach would have. I think we're seeing a very similar thing here with Ash having in his mind a timetable of how he will slowly work out the quarterback position and is attempting to stick to it, rather than reacting to the circumstances, as sticking to a pre-ordained plan is more comfortable for a new and inexperienced coach then trusting your reactions as circumstances change

Can't do that, interceptions and fumbles might happen, ball security is our motto.
Two runs up the middle, a pass into the ground.

Imagine Drew is considering a little more risk this week. Back to back 0's would not be good for perception.
