OC Drew Mehringer Postgame Press Conference - New Mexico

I wish we would settle the QB rotation. Tylin and Gio must have had rough weeks in practice. You wonder how many reps any of them get during a game week at this point.

I think Ash has the potential to be a really good coach. But this hire speaks of RU cheapa$$ budget limitations. You go to Houston and you hire their OC to be your OC. You don't hire some kid overseeing the WRs to be your OC. IF Ash somehow gets the right pieces in place, Mehringer might have some success running his O. But he is showing no adaptability to tailor his system to the players he has.

Wow. This is quite ignorant.

Bunch of coaches on here. The staff is doing what the staff needs to do. Is there a better option than Lav right now? I'm sure there is. But is that option ready?

Ash wants to win. if he thought he had a better option than Laviano, that kid would be playing QB. Obviously, Ash doesn't think he has a better option yet. Hopefully that changes in the coming weeks.

I agree. He's surely making mistakes because he's young and he's learning and he's human. But he seems pretty damn good so far. I hope Ash finds the money to keep him here for awhile. But I think you're right. Probably gone for a head-coaching job or a higher-paying OC job after 2017.

I think he will be Herman's OC once he takes a P5 job. Until then he will stay here most likely if we can keep competitive pay.

IMO Mehringer was trying to adapt his play calling to CL. -The problem was/is that Laviano can't connect on passes in a real game situation that most D1/P5 conference college QB's would view as simple "pitch and catch" kinds of opportunities.

The possibility of substantial yards-after-catch was there a lot of times against New Mexico, but if your QB can't get the ball to his receivers on short throws of a few yards in order to give them a chance to do their thing, then an offensive coordinator can try to adapt, adjust, tweak, modify, simplify, or throw burnt offerings on the field as much as he wants and the result will simply be what happened repeatedly in the 1st quarter on Saturday...a series of 3 and outs.

You mean if Major Applewhite gets a HC position? Bc that won't happen until then. And even at that, I don't think Drew becomes the OC for Herman...unless it's 4-5 years down the line.

And btw, who the hell would think Ash could hire Applewhite away from Houston? Totally clueless. SMFH.

Not sure when Herman will get a P5 job offer he likes, or if you're right. But keeping our coordinators for a few years would be very helpful in recruiting. Good news is that each year, at the moment, we are getting a bigger slice of the Big Ten pie. So that will help us either keep Mehringer or find another good OC.

I think this young OC is struggling . Can't see what's so obvious to 25,000 fans in the stadium.
Wow it's only game three and we are starting to diss the coaching staff. Can we stop for a little. This staff inherited last year's team. Did anyone really think we were going to be AP top ten? Patience.
At least during the interviews Ash and Mehringer are telling you like it is and not praising Laviano, but actually putting him on notice. With four quarterbacks in the last two games, looks like the thinking caps are on.

Picture this:
"It's early December 2015. You've just guided the Houston offense to a #14 ranking, a 12-1 record, an American Conference championship over a stout Temple defense and you whipped some tail along the way, albeit in a non power conference. You're scheduled to face a juggernaut team in a big bowl game soon, even though you'll be solid underdogs. You're making $300k as the OC for a hot shot first-year HC out of Ohio State. Now you get a call from another name from Ohio State. He was a DC there and worked alongside your HC. He just landed the new HC job at Rutgers. Yeah, it might be rehab job, but it's a solid P5 job, paying $450k. Yeah, it doesn't have the shine of your old office in Austin guiding the 'Horns offense, but it's a step in the right direction to an eventual HC job."

But then it sunk in that when even Rutgers FANS don't think a Rutgers job is worthwhile, why the hell would Major Applewhite? And it doesn't have to be Applewhite. But when a P5 team looks for an OC, they tend to go to G5 team and snatch their OC. Or if they're well heeled enough, they snatch an OC from a lesser P5 team. Why? Because there's less chance. Maybe you're the clueless one and the reason we can't have nice things. SMFH.
