First, let me say I HATE having games at The Meadowlands (especially the new stadium). I have been at every Rutgers game in East Rutherford, including the season we played every game there. What my question is (for those in the know)--where would Rutgers make more money ? Will we make more money selling out Rutgers Stadium (52,000)with x amount of tickets selling for dynamic pricing or would we make more money selling out The Meadowlands (82,000) but with seats priced more moderately (say, best seats go for $125),thereby making it more affordable for more people PLUS more money from parking, food, shirts, etc.? Anybody know the answer or at least a fairly good guess.

First, we wouldn't sell out the meadowlands. Second, only way I would want to play a game there would be as a neutral site game to kick off season. We keep out 7 home games and play a Texas, USC, ND type name while splitting revenue.

I wouldn't want ANY games in East Rutherford. Just a hypothetical asking where do you guys think we would clear more money (since we don't have any $ for a few more years)

This. I would never want to lose our home field advantage by playing at the new meadowlands. It's not the same as playing at Rutgers stadium.

There would not be a reasonable priced ticket for that situation. Meadowlands buys the game out so that they can charge and make a profit....

How much RU makes depends on what the Meadowlands wants to pay. They payed a riddicolous $3.2 million for RU-Army in 2010 and did not break even on it. There were other reasons for that

Doubt the offer price would be that much higher

Its definitely something we have to look out. With OSU and Michigan raising 20M more from alumni, how are we supposed to compete? OSU/Rutgers and Rutgers/Penn State would sell out the Meadowlands.

Maryland is playing PSU at M&T stadium in Baltimore. its something we should investigate as well.

I know you are or were a Bergen County guy, but no way Al. College football belongs on college campuses. The fan base woul rightfully revolt if RU ever pulled a stunt like this.

It's not a good atmosphere for college games. The seats are too comfortable.

I'd rather have all games on campus, but if RU gets the right guarantee for a Meadowlands game then RU has to do it before the B1G money comes in. One game there could pay for the cost of attendance stipends.

DJ Spanky,
This thread is going to go wayyy off track.--If I ever to decide to create a TV game show, I am going to spend way more time on the rules. LOL

Busch stadium in St. Louis? Would make for a tough home game road trip for our student fans.

It was "Busch Stadium" when I was a student there ('78-'81), and, so, it will remain Busch Stadium, for me and the old gang. Always.

rutgers home games should be played at rutgers stadium. but if we can't raise enough money, then extraordinary measures need to be taken, inclusive of playing games at giants stadium.

fanbase either needs to open its wallet or shutup. fanbase has all these expectations but doesn't want to support them. And then we wonder why we can't land recruits.

There is no good reason (financial or otherwise) for Rutgers to ever play a home game off-campus.

EVER

NEVER EVER

NOT EVEN ONCE

NEVER

Just go back into hibernation for another 4 weeks al...we may make a few $$$ more at the Meadows but at this stage we need any advantage we can find...a game at HOME is an advantage...perhaps after we win our first B1G Championship we can play an out of conference team as was suggested...as for opening wallets? ...I would bet that many who make that statement are one's who need to look in the mirror.

No you're not. And I still have splinters from the Wooden seats when I first went to RUTGERS STADIUM.

Shack, you are right on the money. The only way RU makes beaucoup $$$ is if the Meadowlands gains control of a game and gives RU a hefty payout. The Meadowlands would then gain control of tickets, parking and concessions. Simply put, RU will never play a game at MetLife in which it controls tickets etc. because the cost of renting Metlife is prohibitive. The profit-margin would not be large enough for it to make sense for Rutgers.

Look at the numbers:

RU home game on campus -
42,000 tickets at an avg price of say $50 is $2.1 mil (10k seats go to students).
10,000 cars parked at $20 each is $200k
42,000 fans spending about $10 each on food and drink is $420k
Required seat donations - not sure if this can br broken down but if we have 6 campus games and not 7 it may lead to lower donations.
Total is about $2.7 to 3 mil for a home game (revenue)

For a Met Life Stadium game you would need to get $3.5 mil or more
82,000 seats at $50 each is $4.1 mil (it is really 72,000 seats plus 10,000 free student seats so an avg of $57 a ticket)
82,000 fans spending about $10 each is $820k
20,000 cars at $30 each is $600k
Total is about $5.5 mil based on a sell out
if only 60-65 k seats are sold then you are in the $4-4.5 mil range

42,000? We closed an end zone a few years back...we hold 53,000 now.
Would we even get the parking and concession revenue?

First, We need to stop worrying about how much money those schools have because we will never catch up. Second, no way you give up a home game so PSU can outnumber you. Third, bet this game is way under attended and the Ravens lose money thereby never offering it up again.

Of the 52000 to 53000 about 10000 are student tickets that are basically free. You can't figure them into a calculation for revenue.

I thought that at first as well but I'm assuming he's considering students free. which they mostly are

My opinion as an outsider is out of conference, neutral site games are the only things you should consider for MetLife. We played Syracuse there 2 years ago and it was OK. Marginal tailgating, stadium was corporate but fine. Comparing that to playing UCF the following year in Dublin probably negatively affects my opinion as well. Actually Syracuse in MetLife might be the perfect game for you guys.

And yes as a Penn Stater we feel it's a little ridiculous that the first time Maryland gets us at home they were willing to sacrifice the atmosphere of playing on campus and sold out for a bigger payday. That's small time thinking if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure that parking alone brings in $1M in revenue per game.

If Met Life does a season opening neutral site game I doubt RU is chosen. They will pick a team like USC or Texas and probably select a team like Penn St as their match-up.
