Ollie out

Heard that they are firing for cause, but cause not so clear yet, although speculating it's "improper workouts" whatever the hell that is. Seems like they are finding a reason to can him w/o paying. I mean Calhoun had the stolen laptops and sailed right through it so they must really want Ollie out of there. Word is he is not a good recruiter.

Interestingly the reports say he is being fired for cause due to the NCAA investigation. Obviously that's a cop out, but speaks to the possibility that UConn is going to be affected significantly by the FBI investigation.

Or it speaks to available funds for paying him to leave and getting new coach in...

They owe Ollie $18mm, they just re-upped his deal last year. Ouch. Definitely trying to get out of paying him. They're going to have to pony up something, everyone knows that. Combine that payout, whatever it ends up being, with the lousy AAC conference payout, will they have the cash to buy out Pike for another $5mm to boot?

Kratch on nj.com thinks they should go after Danny Hurley.

Conn board mentions workout issues. Would guess they are trying to wiggle out of paying what they owe him--like maybe 10 mil? A couple of posters have mentioned Pike, but others say he doesn't have the resume to coach an elite program like UConn in the fast-rising AAC.

That elite UConn program is that fast rising AAC couldn’t draw flies to their home games. It looked pathetic.

Weird but could happen
Calhoun brought back
Will UConn fire Kevin Ollie, bring back Jim Calhoun?
>Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun, who was replaced by Ollie in 2012, has been itching to get back into the coaching game for the past several years and could offer Benedict a short-term replacement that would surely get the thumbs up from aggravated alumni.<

Five UConn coaching candidates to replace Kevin Ollie as head coach | NCAA Basketball | Sporting News
Jim Calhoun
>Why he makes sense: It sounds far fetched, but why not? Sure, Calhoun turns 76 in May. Sure, he hasn't coached since the 2011-12 season. But this wouldn't be a long-term move. Bringing Calhoun back would almost certainly stability to a program not performing to the level it's fan base has grown accustom to. If Calhoun can play Bobby Bowden and raise and rear his Jimbo Fisher-like successor, he'd be an ideal stop gap. <

Sometimes it is hard to say no to your alma mater, but Pike has the program moving in the right direction. If he truly believes in RU's Big 10 potential, he sticks around.

Ollie is Uconn royalty and they are clearly trying to f him. Not sure Pike would feel too comfortable being part of that family.

Ollie should have had Sean Miller’s agent negotiate his deal, then the NCAA issues would not constitute cause.

Just like Rutgers trying to get out paying Gary Waters, "for cause" firing of Ollie sends a chilling message to the coaching fraternity...unless there is something huge behind it.

BTW, if I were UConn, Providence's Cooley would be #1 on my list.

Why would Cooley leave The Big East for Connecticut which plays in a much worse league and hasn't drawn flies lately.

UCONN better give up their football pipe dream or the entire institution is toast

it is hard to imagine a former player that has a possibility of coaching his once great team/UConn not wishing he could take the job. It HAS to occur to him.

BUT it seems they cant detach from Ollie & we have a good contract with coach Pike.
Thank GOD Hobbs locked him in !

Because it makes sense to shoot high? I doubt that Pikiell leaves just btw he says B1G is the best conference in the country every chance he gets and how much he loves Rutgers and great boss and AD in Hobbs. Never underestimate being happy in your job. I would stay forever!

Article in today’s Star Ledger. Not sure if new information here is the reason for firing.

Did I miss something? Or am I in some kind of time warp? Wasn't Ollie fired months ago and Hurley hired?
UConn just finally officially giving the reasons he was fired.

Pretty weak if you ask me. Those appear to be Level II violations. It is not like Ollie had a violation record like Larry Brown. Just self report and keep it moving, unless you just want to fire someone and avoid paying them.

Far worse violations occurred under Jim Calhoun and UConn didn't fire him.

Pretty it's the "want to fire someone and avoid paying them" angle. Similar to what we did with Fred Hill, Jr.

What are the odds Vegas Knights win the Western Confernce or Eagles winning the Super Bowl? If sports gambling were legal I might invest a few dollars.

This would be a true statement in 2004. Now it's a facetious one.
