UConn’s Dan Hurley calls out conferences that ‘claim’ to be the best without NCAA ‘championship trophies’

Well, I'm saying a lot of things (not all toward you specifically):

(1) Hurley saying the Big East is the strongest because xxxx is the same as Pike saying the Big Ten is the strongest because yyyy. Neither of them have analyzed this they are just hyping up their conferences. I'm fine with this but it's weird to me to say it's somehow bad for Pike to do it but good for Hurley to do it.

(2) Hurley's specific argument is stupid. "Which conference contained the champion?" is basically useless when comparing one larger group of teams to another larger group of teams.

(3) No one can agree on what exactly it means to have a "strong" conference which goes back to #1 (a bunch of coaches can coachspeak their conferences up, who cares?).

(4) To the extent that people CAN agree on what it means, and actually measure it, the Big Ten has been stronger recently than the Big East, though probably neither have been the best which has been the B12, and they are both good, strong conferences. To that point:

Torvik rankings
2020 B10 #1, BE #2
2021 B10 #1, BE #5
2022 B10 #2, BE #4
2023 B10 #2, BE #3
2024 B10 #2, BE #3

Massey ratings
2020 B10 #1, BE #3
2021 B10 #1, BE #5
2022 B10 #2, BE #4
2023 B10 #2, BE #3
2024 B10 #2, BE #3

Sagarin
I can't find historical but last year he had B10 #2 and BE #3.

You will notice in this sample that the B10 is ahead of the BE every single time.

(5) People here have a really weird obsession with:
(i) Denegrating our own conference
(ii) Felating Dan Hurley
Odd thing though is pike says the BIG has “hall of fame coaches.” Not really sure what he means . The only guy that is a hall of famer now is Izzo …maybe painter can be

When Pike says our conference is the best….what does he base it on….Out of conference records..tourney wins..Gavitt Games or ACC challenge results? In each category I am not sure our conference is the best. Now, some make the case that we beat each other up…but at some point championships do matter. FWIW, the Big East has won 4 of the last 8 championships…different teams too.
When Pikiel is talking about the Big Ten as the best basketball conference he is surely relying on its long proud history. The Big Ten’s tradition of excellence does mean something. What other conference can point to four of its current members being part of the NCAA final four in the same year. I am excited about Rutgers being part of that tradition. The Big East was more of an up and down conference which is up again with UConn, but I don’t see it back to how dominant it was in the 1980s, especially 1985 when Villanova, Georgetown and St John’s were all in the final four. They had great teams with great players. Rutgers has two potentially great players in Dylan and Ace, but unlike players like Ewing and Mullins they will be here only one year to make an impact on the college game. Who knows where Rutgers and the Big Ten will go this year. In basketball, it would be great if the Big Ten got another championship to keep its tradition going even though it seems unlikely this year. Purdue seems to be the favorite to win the Big Ten this year, but I don’t think it’s better without Zach Edey. The only way the Big Ten can win it all this year is for one of its teams to far exceed expectations. Fortunately the Big Ten is on much more solid ground than the PAC12, which Bill Walton called the Conference of Champions. I bring this all up because in the 1980s, I was incredibly pissed that Rutgers wasn’t in the Big East but could have been except that Rutgers wouldn’t join because it wanted to be part of a football conference. However, now as a basketball fan, forgetting entirely about football, do I wish our basketball team played in the Big East, I honestly don’t. I like playing the teams we play in the Big Ten, I like that we beat Purdue when it was the number one team in the country on our home court, and I look forward to UCLA with its history playing here at the RAC. If history didn’t matter, and the Big East was truly a much better basketball conference, I would be disappointed that we aren’t part of it, but I am not. As a basketball fan, I am glad the Big East survived as a niche basketball conference, but I truly would not be more excited playing Big East teams rather than Big Ten teams. If the championship drought in basketball for the Big Ten goes on another year, I don’t see the Big Ten losing its relevance. If the Big East has a number of down years, I don’t know how it will stay relevant.

He’s not wrong. Their conference has the last 2 natties. Love that he talks shit and backs it up.

I don't care what conference teams are in when it comes to the NCAA Tournament. Its a one and done event if a team loses a game .Uconn under Hurley has won two straight NCAA Championships which is a remarkable achievement.

Yup. And it’s likely there will be a new best conference by his metrics this year. “Best” really is based on what arbitrary metrics you want to use.

He talks his shit. But he wins. And he won’t cower when he doesn’t. And I respect that. Frankly, I’m a big fan.

And Pikes metric is probably based on deepest and most competitive. There are probably arguments for 10 teams in the B1G to win the conference this year.

I swear you’re like an AI bot. Every post is some generic stuff loosely related to the topic at hand.

You play each season with one end goal - to win the NCAA championship.

Big East is top conference right now.

Any other claims about top-bottom quality or whatever else does not translate into winning championships.

So conferences that consistently win ultimate prize are the easily the best.

UConn basketball has a lot to crow about given its success. Not sure that translates into the conference being the best. As of now, I am not aware of any conference that wants to swoop in and take UConn because of the state of its football program. But if UConn left, how good would the conference be? The Big East is certainly the best conference for schools without football. Glad the Big East survived and hope it stays viable. The Rutgers Seton Hall rivalry game is one of my favorite games of the season, it wouldn’t be if Seton Hall played in a conference that stunk.

This is mega dumb.

By Danny’s logic, the runner-up would be from the second best conference, the other 2 Final Four teams would be from the third and fourth best conferences, and so on.

So in 2023, thanks to FAU getting to the Final Four, Conference USA would have been one of the top 4 conferences, which no thinks is true (normally it would be around 15th).

This is the beauty of the NCAA tournament, the possibility that one team can emerge from an otherwise mediocre conference.

People need to stop worrying about what coaches say regarding their conference. They always overstate their own conferences. It's just more coach-speak.

It's a silly debate.
Yep and that's the special sauce of all internet forums. I mean, you said it's a silly debate and immediately then entered into that debate yourself. Followed by lots more posts debating it. 😀

Not giving you crap here - your comment and post were good and the thread is perfectly fine and all. I'm just enjoying the comic Zen of fanbase duality. 🙂
