Kid from Wall Twp. Repeated 8th grade this year. Guess this is the wave of the future. Hmmm

wave of the future? its always been the case. top athletes with low academics have always been highly recruited at every level.

"McKenzie, who repeated the eighth grade this year and turned 15 March 28, is one of New Jersey's most coveted young athletes in recent memory. He already has drawn comparisons to some of the state's top football players such as Knowshon Moreno, Donald Brown and Jabrill Peppers, and some coaches and recruiting analysts believe he's even more talented as a wrestler."

I may be wrong, but I think in most cases they repeat a year for Athletic Advantage (a year older than the majority of the kids in his class). I guess it helps w academics in some cases as well. win/win? lol

The best comparison is that Josh is the next Knowshon Moreno in Footbal whilealso being the next Suriano in Wrestling.

As far as him repeating 8th Grade, he was a Top 10 student in the Wall Intermediate Eighth Grade Class in the class of 2014. The question is does his brother Matt, a Wall HS sophomore, follow him to BC.

Wall has a good HS Wrestling team too, no? Now Bergen C is on another level, getting close to Blair status in wrestling. Seems like he is built just like Johnny Sebastian (now at NW). Maybe having Campanile's brother on our staff might help at some point.

We really have people who follow what 8th graders do? Someone needs a life.

It's on the front home page of NJcom. NOt the Sport page, the HOME PAGE. And the story is as much about the controversy of Publics vs Non Publics, separating them in conference play, as anything else.

Abro,

Wall had 3 kids at AC this year and bring back an outstanding team next year. One of the 3 at AC was Matt McKenzie, Josh's Sopomore brother. Matt placed 6th at 192 and is a physical beast as a sophomore. Matt is also an outstanding Def. Lineman.

I follow high school football & wrestling quite closely. Used to be an NJSIAA football offiical. I know Wall HS has had an excellent program in wrestling for years. Football seems to have faltered a bit. Not sure what this kid's sport will be in college, but guessing it might be Wrestling.
70 miles each way (sometimes in traffic) is quite the haul.

I mnow there was an article a few year's back on Bosco detailing how they had a Van that went to the coty to pick the NY kids up. I forget the details, but it was a service provided at no cost, it may have been an volunteer driving. The whole private school set-up is out of whack. Also local public districts are obliged to provide the cost of bus service for these kids, which is shocking. All of those schools advise the kids to check their local districts. I know our school board meeting is littered with bus fee approvals for kids to go to privates and Bergen Academies.

By the way saw the headline, didn't click.

Why is it assumed he will be driving back and forth everyday and not just put up somewhere?

Publics (north Bergen football) have done it and (rightfully) get stripped of titles. Non-publics do it and it's lauded as a nice opportunity.

My son turns 19 two months after he graduates HS. Luckily he is a July baby. Huge advantage sports wise. He's in the 6th grade. 5' 11" 190 lbs, size 15 feet. Plays baseball.

I was 15 when I started my junior year in HS.

This kids a beast! He played Pop Warner in Ocean TWP while living in Howell. Great support system and an uncle that is very involved in his development. We should offer him now.

...and the 'collegification' of the North Jersey parochials continues; we're now having public 'commitments' for farging 8th graders...is Rivals Jr. following pee-wee sports far behind?

Now we are calling out 8th graders on here??

Some of you are beyond creepy.

No, Whitebus, not calling out the particular kid who I don't know from Adam; I personally think the whole (adult-created) construct of HS commitment announcements for sports from 8th graders is beyond creepy. Whatever happened to 'just' graduating middle school and progressing to high school, wherever that may be?

Just to clarify, local BOE's are responsible for transporting students to other schools, including parochials up to a mileage limit. I don't remember the exact limit, but it was somewhere around 20 miles. If they attend a school further than that, then the schools are not responsible. Somehow, I think BC will figure out a way to get this kid to and from school, or provide a place to live nearby.

"After much consideration, Timmy Smith has committed to Springfield Elementary School. Timmy's work with Play Doh in pre-school projects he will be an all-state performer in football, basketball and wrestling. His parents worked closely with Timmy on this decision and the 3 of them think it's best for his athletic and academic growth. Springfield Elementary in only 72 miles from his home, but his parents are considering selling their home and living in an RV in Springfield's parking lot."

He will be driving himself for a good portion of his high school days. $$$$

I think Carroo stayed with someone when he was at DBP.

Q. Are there any limits on nonpublic school transportation?

Yes, there are several limits on nonpublic school transportation. They are:The school must be a nonprofit school; The school must be located within the state, except for certain counties of the third class (Warren); The school may be located no more than twenty miles from the student's home; The cost of the transportation may not exceed the annual maximum expenditure set by law each year ($884 for the 2014-2015 school year);Students must be in grades kindergarten through grade 12; andStudents must meet the entrance age requirements for students in the resident public school district.

Abro,

Football is coming back at Wall, outstanding sophomore class.

I believe Josh's uncle is looking farther down the road for his Professional future, which Wrestling doesn't provide. Maybe he'll be the next Caldwell and do both.

A missed opportunity for my Crimson Knights

Don't worry about him having to commute to school, since he can do what all the Public schools do when they recruit athletes from out of district, let him live with an "Aunt" or "Uncle" near the school, been going on forever with the publics & privates.

Local Boards of Ed technically reimburse families who go private if they are not willing or able to provide the transportation.

My mom used to love getting that check from Clifton every year ;)

He played on my nephews' national championship team a few years ago. I can't even describe how good he was at running the ball. The best youth football player I have ever seen, even after being injured. It was like watching Pete Maravich play against third graders--a kid playing on a completely different level than everyone else.

srru86,

Hopefully Josh's uncle will allow Matt McKenzie, Josh's soph brother, to stay at Wall. Matt is a potential All Shore Football player and State Wrestling Champion.

Why hopefully?

kids repeat 8th grade all the time. Karl Towns did it then graduated HS in 3 years when he got the Kentucky offer. There is no reason to repeat 8th grade if he is as good as they say. It just pushes your potential earning window a year down the road.

Good to know, thanks.
