OT: Alabama baseball hires Maryland coach

That's life as a stepping stone. He's the third Maryland manager to be poached in about nine years.

Erik Bakich (Michigan, now at Clemson)
John Szfec (Virginia Tech)
Rob Vaughn (Alabama)

I liked Rob Vaughn, but he trickled into the job by attrition just as Swope did today. Vaughn was disliked as a coach early on, when it seemed like he was trying to reinvent the game (I think he had like a hundred different batting orders his first season), but really grew into an amazing motivator and manager. There's no reason to think the new guy can't do the same.

Lots of people last time were clamoring for a certain East Carolina assistant who is from Bowie. But I guess that didn't happen this time either.

I'm happy for Coach Vaughn, but sorry to see him go. I'm going to bet that he finds a way to take Hunterdon Central's Kyle McCoy with him...

Wonder who Maryland targets to replace him. I could see them trying to steal UConn's HC away. B1G money > BE money.
They don't really put much money into baseball. But I think before they put any into a new coach, I suspect that will try to upgrade the facilities some...

Big 10 is baseball purgatory. Oregon new head coach came from Purdue and won 51 games and took his team to the super regionals in his first year. Unfortunately his already thin pitching staff gave out on him and they couldn’t outscore ORU. The Ducks are now positioned to challenge in state rival Oregon State. The Beavs are already an elite program. .

From an easy baseball conference to that gauntlet…yikes

From this article …
“In fact, according to a recent report by USA Today, the average salary for head coaches of college baseball teams in the SEC was over $800,000 in 2021.”
