OT: Bo Ryan retires

Michael Cuddyer
Bo Ryan
.????????

Some time these things come in threes - I can hope

I think this move was to give Greg Gard a chance to prove to Barry Alvarez he could take over the Badger's MBB program and not miss a beat from how Bo ran it.
Before this season started Ryan was talking about retiring after this season and tried to get Alvarez to commit to letting Gard replace him.
That didn't work out to Bo's satisfaction .
Looks like Bo found a way to give his top assistant a chance to impress the AD and know he did what he could to give Greg Gard the opportunity he tried and failed to do before this season started.
Now it's up to Gard to make the most of that opportunity.

After the Bo spoke at the press conference, Barry Alvarez spoke and said that Gard was the interim coach.

Obviously, Gard has to be successful the rest of this year in order to be named the coach for next year and beyond. That is pressure.

I guess Bo Ryan felt this was the best way to get try and let Gard be the head coach if he was rebuffed by Alvarez(in naming Gard the successor) when rumors of retiring at the end of the year had come out.

Best of Luck,
Groz

To me this is a classy move giving a chance to his long time assistant coach. Sounds similar to what Fred Hill Senior did.

Agreed------have a friend who played with Bo in college.

His whole team goes out to Madison for a golf weekend and a football game every Fall.

Swears he's the exact same guy now he was then which is rare.

I disagree totally. It's not Ryan's job to select the next coach and put the AD and the university over a barrel. Where's the loyalty to the university that had compensated him so well for so long?

Glen Crooks did this too

It's really an ego thing. For perspective, a HS FB Coach in NJ tried to do something similar.

Apparently Gard has been with Ryan for 25 years. all he is doing is giving Gard a chance to show Wisconsin what he can do for 2/3 of a season.

Bo Ryan owes nothing to Wisconsin because of his compensation. it's not like he was joe paterno or Derek jeter and got overpaid based on his career.

Whether you agree or disagree with what Bo done, it shows he is loyal to his assistants and Alvarez has has trouble keeping his football coaches, because he's loyal to the school but his coaches are looked at ( my opinion) in a financial way and not in a personal one .
Which is why they bolt for other P-5 programs.
Ryan must know that and knew BA's loyalty is to the bottom line, not those working under him,
and Gard being loyal didn't mean much in BA's eyes.
So Bo did what he had to do to give his assistant a chance and did right by that assistant.

If I were a Wisconsin fan I would not be happy. Ryan is loyal to his assistant but overstepped his bounds and put his assistant and his own ego ahead of the fans, the university, his players, and set up Alvarez to look like the bad guy if he doesn't hire this guy.

Or BA will look smart for not assuring Bo his assistant will be hired to replace him when Bo first talked retirement.
If Gard doesn't make the Badgers better than their 7-5 record looks now, he'll be out at the end of this season.
If Wisconsin turns it around, he'll have earned to have the interim label taking off and given permanent status.
To me this is a win-win for Alvarez, he didn't have to agree having Gard the HC in waiting this year, but now has a chance to see if he deserves it or not without a long term commitment.

I guarantee Alvarez doesn't see it that way. Plus, they've just replaced a great winning coach with a guy with no experience at this level.

Bo Ryan took a Program that was a complete non entity and made them into a consistent Top 20 Program.

I got no problem with him trying to get his Assistant the HBC.

IMO he's earned that right.

Lots of people on this board didn't like bo after our win last year . Lots of name calling right here at the former badgers coach .

Yes, Bo was not gracious in defeat. He was pissed that he lost to RU - who as we know lost the next 15 straight - without his best player for entire game and his 2nd best player for 3/4 of the game.

He is a curmudgeonly sort, but losing to that/this RU team had him pissed.

Dean Smith did the same thing at UNC. He retired after the deadline for the school to legally conduct a search for a replacement.

He did this to give his friend, and long time assistant, Bill Guthridge, a shot at being a head coach.

Wisconsin was in the final four two seasons before they hired Bo Ryan. The season before the final four, they were in the NCAA Tournament. Hardly a complete non entity.

Yes, this is an entitled guy forcing his bosses hand. If I was Alvarez I would not be happy.
