OT: Boston Celtics suspend coach Ime Udoka for the upcoming season

I was going to post about this but thought it might get sidetracked.

Am I allowed to say I don't really understand what's happening?
Was the woman on the actual coaching staff - making Udoka her boss?
Or was she just on the Celtics staff - making the GM(?) or someone else her boss?

Maybe because it's an affair it is causing for a weird working environment.
I'm just confused all the way around.

Note - my wife and I both work for the same company and also even in partner groups at one point with the same 2nd level manager. Everyone knew what I joined the company (and frankly already knowing all her coworkers and the leaders helped me eventually get hired into the company).

There’s a twitter rumor that he had an affair with an owner or executives wife. Not sure if that’s a different woman or the same.

I’m hoping he leaves Celtics and Nets hire him.
I also don’t understand the punishment based on what’s known.

He''ll join a group that will buy the Phoenix Suns , fire their HC and hire himself.
No matter what he does,he'll be coaching an NBA team next year.whether it's Boston or
somewhere else.
If the Celtics fired him instead of handing down the suspension, he'd probably would be working the next day.
Ass it stands, if Bosto fires him during the upcoming season Udoka will have plenty of offers to chose from to run a team that will fire their HC to get him.

Is the NBA still a thing?

Thats Good Robert Deniro GIF

He violated a company policy. There is obviously some/a lot we don't know, but I think Ryen Russillo had a good take on this - why the suspension? If he violated team rules in such an egregious manner, he should have been fired. Or, he should just be allowed to continue coaching. The specific penalty is odd.

Bro you post the same sh*t over and over under any NBA thread. We get it, you’re not a fan — that’s fine. But plenty of people still enjoy the NBA (by all metrics it’s growing, both in the US and internationally). Let us enjoy it lol
Only if Ron is in the league.

I’m not a Stephen A fan, but I think he has a point re race in this case…just fire him, unless Celts are worried he’d quickly get a job. To do this just before training camp opens doesn’t feel like a coincidence either.

Dan Majerle and Kevin Johnson are retired. Who would play $4,000,000,000

The Suns are one of the NBA's better teams. They were in the Finals the season before last. Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton, and Mikael Bridges are 3 of the league's best young players. Arizona loves the NBA, and there is no shortage of Silicon Valley billionaires who would be interested in buying the team.

It is confusing. This was egregious enough to suspend him for a whole season, but not egregious enough to just fire him?

Philly is also very good in the MRDA

Yes, I think the policy was clear based on reports and he screwed up. He’s not the first and won’t be the last to let his little head make bad decisions for him.

What is wrong with you guys? He should be fired. He is the head coach of the Boston Celtics having sexual relations with a female person in the organization. Regardless of where she works within the organization he holds all the power and has tremendous influence. You have women trying to break through in the nba and this one women is having sex with the head coach. How can this be a fair playing field with other women in the organization? Whether she wanted to use it to get ahead or not it creates a big problem. This is not the same at two nobodies in the organization hooking up. It is the head coach.

on top of that from the Celtics point of view all this woman has to say “sexual harassment” and “the GM knew” and the nba would be forced to investigate the issue and it would be front page news in 2022.

He is extremely lucky and not many people would get the opportunity to keep their job

I agree with Pancho on this - he probably should have been fired.

Some more info has been published, though I didn't find it particularly edifying.

So, according to your first paragraph, coworkers dating is an offense and worthy of termination if they are not on the exact same level within the organization?

Can't say if suspension the right move or firing deserved.
Seems like the full story hasn't come out yet, so without all the facts , what punishment I feel is deserved could be less or more that it should be.
But I do feel his Celtic days will be over soon.
When the firing starts some NBA team will ask for permission to talk to him and Boston will let him go without asking for compensation.
Or something so small it would be like nothing asked for.

I don’t think he’ll coach another game with the Celtics again

he will be head coach in NBA again, elsewhere, within 5 years -5000000

Ray Lewis was an accomplice to a double murder and didn't miss a game

Seems like a PR decision not to fire him, since he just took them to Game 6 of the NBA Finals in his first season as a head coach in the NBA.

This way if he leaves on his own the team can say they sent a strong message that even a consensual affair involving their head coach and a team staffer will not be tolerated.

And they can say they were willing to give him a second chance but he decided to pursue his career elsewhere.

I am not sure the hierarchy of an nba basketball organization but I would assume the head coach is 3rd in command outside of the owner and GM. The head coach holds influence over 99% of the organization and can make or break someone’s career. So yes when the head coach is banging people on staff that is very different than two staff people banging.

I'm not a big NBA fan, but the Suns are going to sell for over $4B. Maybe close to $5B..........so yeah.

Reports are they are going to hit $4b!!
Crazy.

Surprisingly not some California tech guy who can make quick trips back and forth.
Another mortgage guy (like Cavs owner Dan Gilbert).

Rutgers/Big Ten related - he was a walk on for the 2000 MSU championship team.

I don't think folks realize the Suns are one of the eight (8) most valuable franchises in the NBA. Warm weather market, short private jet flight from massive US wealth in the LA/SF market. Sarver bought the Suns for $400MM in 2004. 10x on $400MM. Crazy.
