OT: Carl Edwards set to retire

Wow. Hope he is ok. Would likely have picked up a championship or two if he kept racing.

Sounds like he simply wants to be with his family more. Good for him.

For his diehard fans that's tough. I was a big Rusty Wallace fan. Would watch a lot of races as long as he was in it. Since his retirement I don't have much interest other than the Daytona 500. Unlike true team sports race fans mostly root for drivers. Once they leave it's tough to start rooting for another guy that you have been rooting against for years.

NASCAR has lost some major names the past year.

These drivers make so much money they don't need to stick around like the old timers did

Wow. Cousin Carl is retiring. Could've had a few titles, including last year, but it looks like it's not to be. Good racer, and raced hard & fair, not like some other bastards (both old & new). A lot of legends leaving in the last few years.

Lol.....that was Carl Weathers and I believe he is still alive. Besides being an actor he played for the Oakland Raiders as well

Didnt Carl Weathers get his hand bitten off by an alligator while playing golf?

I still think I ruined Bobby Labonte's career. The first race I ever watched was a win for him in Atlanta after he won the Championship.I got hooked on the sport--even bought a Bobby Labonte jacket. He hardly ever won after that and ended up leaving the #18 car and Joe Gibbs Racing. Not sure whatever happened to his son or nephew who raced in the Busch series for a while.

Justin races dirt late models in North Carolina, I think.

He was my guy too

Still watch the 4 plate races because he's still racing those.

Miss the 18 interstate batteries pontiac with fatback Mcswain

For years I just didn't get racing. I was like "Why don't people just sit on the side of the Garden State Parkway with a couple sandwiches and watch cars go by." After watching on TV,went to Pocono for several years and LOVED it. People told me you have to go to Delaware for a NASCAR race. Once I went there I never went back to Pocono. For those with a family, going to races at New Egypt or Wall is a ton of fun and very inexpensive.

Bridgeport Speedway best in NJ

Daniel Suárez is replacing Edwards.

Suárez is a real talent. He can easily steal a win or two this year.

I'm with you, big Tony Stewart fan but the past few years have been rough on him and now he is gone, too.

I've found myself following Truex Jr more and more - Jersey guy that just had a very competitive season and he should be around for a few years

I root for him as well. Knew his dad from years ago. Stories good and bad that I can't post on here.
I also keep an eye on Danica Patrick. And why wouldnt I? Hopefully some woman breaks through that barrier. But in the end nothing compared to Rusty. Loved the MGD black and gold car.
Maybe I'll jump on the new guy Suarez and see what he can do.

keselowski fan here.....also like Kurt Bush and now that they switched from Toyota to Ford will probably follow him a little more closely.

Dover is a great track to go see a race. Pocono is the absolute worst, also TV does not do the sport any justice. You have to see a race live and experience the race day atmosphere and then people appreciate it. Charlotte is a good track Talladega is probably my favorite Richmond and Martinsville are fun tracks too.

Pass on Danica. If she was a guy she'd be running at New Egypt in the dirt.

Edwards was one of my Favs. I'll miss him. Truex is a guy too with the NJ connection.

Combat Carl never retires, Combat Carl finds a way. I guess he was all talk. Never the same after losing that hand.

I was a Jeff Gordon fan. Since he retired I've switched to Truex because of the NJ connection just to give myself a rooting interest when I watch.

Big NASCAR fan. I've been to races at Dover (multiple times), Pocono, Sonoma and Phoenix. The race I attended in Phoenix last year was one of the closest ever. Edwards lost by a whisker to Harvick.

All the best to Edwards.

Yeah me too. I don't LOVE the sport but in person it's a lot of fun and kills an afternoon on TV if you have the free time.

It is on my list to go to this year along with Homestead. Tracks that I have been to are

Daytona (was a season ticket holder and should have never given them up)
Talladega
Charolette (multiple times)
Pocono (once is enough)
Dover (mulitple times)
Richmond
Texas Motor Speedway
Las Vegas

I went to the Bristol night race in 2010, it was their 100th Cup race. What a sight that coliseum is. You just can't quite grasp it how many people there are. It was a whole event, the camping the festivities, and it was LOUD. Also a really nice facility.

As for Carl, I think there is more to this story. Rumors already circulating that his sponsor Arris pushed him out because the owner Carlos Slim wanted Suarez in the car since he won the Xfinity championship last year. Danica is rumored to get the boot from Stewart after this season and Carl would fill her ride in the 10. It's a reputable source but it seems strange.
