Charlie was the oldest living player for three teams:Red Sox,White Sox,and Detroit.
It was with the Tigers that Charlie fittingly played most of his career as he was from Paw Paw,Michigan.
He had this unusual knack for hitting home runs on Sunday, likely the highest percentage ever hit by any player on any day of the week.

I remember him as one of the Tigers who was a Yankee-killer -- pitcher Frank Lary was another.

It might be that Maxwell was especially good at hitting home runs on Sundays because Sunday games were always day games. One thing for sure: he was a fine player.

Maxwell sure was good, & yes Frank Larry was the Yankee Killer. He owned them & a fine pitcher to boot.
RIP Charlie.

The Tigers' best season in that era was by far 1961, when they finished second. Unfortunately, they were chasing the Yankees in the year in which Maris hit 61 homers, Mantle 54, and in which Whitey Ford won 25 games. The Tigers came into Yankee Stadium as contenders for a September series, lost the Friday night game 1-0, and were swept in three. They finished eight games out despite winning 101 games.
