OT: Colonoscopy Prep

Get the pill-based prep. The liquid based preps are nauseatingly nasty tasting.

Uh, I mean, pass that along to the friend. Absolute worst part of the entire process is having to drink that nasty crap. But now that they have pills, I'll make my doc prescribe those instead (or I'll get another doc).

Is vodka considered a "clear liquid"?

Asking for a friend.
Also, see if you can smuggle out some of whatever sedative they give us. Can use it for some upcoming tailgates. I don't know what they use, but I always feel great after waking up.

Hm... unless it's having a camera jammed up my butt that makes me feel so great, not that there's anything wrong with that.

The concern isn't the prep solution. It's really about the limitation to consume only clear liquids the day prior to the procedure, which disrupts my... er, uh.. my friend's daily routine.. Whiskey isn't clear. Vodka is.

as someone who ran a GI center I can say, technically, yes, it's a clear liquid. But you don't want to get too drunk before you finish your prep.

pills or not, you still need to have only clear liquids the day before your procedure and nothing the day of otherwise your prep won't work and you will have starved yourself for nothing because you will be FOS and the procedure will not be able to be completed.

I suppose using Vodka might alleviate the need to sedate you for the procedure.

I have no problem having nothing but water all day. I don't even mind the resulting cleaning out of my GI tract from the prep.

I just cannot stand the prep liquids I've had to drink.

I should also point out that no matter how much prep I drink, or how much water I drink for however long, I'll still always be FOS. 😃

You give the impression you do these often like maybe annually. I thought it was like once every 10 years or something like that

It’s weird this is a topic today…I literally dropped my wife before 9:30 this morning for her colonoscopy…last night and early this morning everything went well so far…she was nervous but no issues…

If I never see another bowl of chicken broth it will be too soon. The miralax mixed in gatorade was easy. Wear a diaper to bed too. I mean, tell your friend

Done it a couple of times. Hated the pills, but that was about 10 years ago, so maybe its different now. Drinking that much fluid was brutal.

The second time it was the mix, which was only like 2 12 ounce glasses.

No big deal with the procedure. 2nd time I went to work right after...

The procedure is a breeze - you're unconscious. It's the prep that sucks.

The whole prep scene is almost (but not quite) worth it for those few seconds after taking the twilight 😴

10 years ago it was every 5 years. Then insurance companies got involved and said if your first colonoscopy had no polyps you had to wait 10 years. My words of advice, having run a GI center for 5 years: DO NOT WAIT 10 YEARS
I always tell people my story: first colonoscopy: no polyps. No history. no family history of anything. 5 years later I'm running the GI center and seeing way too many people with colon cancers so I have another one done (you just have to tell the doc something that will allow them to give you the procedure). This time I have a polyp that was big enough, had I waited 5 more years it would have been colon cancer. Don't ever wait 10 years.

Thanks for sharing.

I mean you could have said you had a friend or a patient that had that happen.

Hey everyone, @MrsScrew had a big polyp!!! Oy.

My doc found a polyp or two a couple colonoscopies ago. Removed them. And I had to go back after 3 years instead of the usual 5. All that was fine. What was slightly irritating was how my medical insurance treated it for my last procedure (the one that came after they found/removed the polyps).

Under my medical insurance, colonoscopies are usually covered 100% as a preventative care procedure. But because the prior procedure had found polyps, the insurance company declared the next procedure a "medical procedure", not "preventative care" and so I had a co-pay and it applied to my deductible and all.

I didn't really GAF about the money so much as the principle. Felt like telling the insurance rep "at least the Gastroenterologist gave me some Propofol when F-ing me, you guys are doing it with no anesthetic at all".

beaced recalls that takin g the liquid was not the problem. It was the never ending result oi taking the liquid.POOP FOREVER.

also, if there is family history you need to have one done more frequently. depending on what kind of history it may be as frequent as every 3 years.
If you have a parent/sibling with colon cancer you should have your first scope 10 years before they were diagnosed ( i.e. dad had colon cancer at 40 your first scope should be at age 30) or starting at age 40

They recently changed the age for everyone's first colonoscopy from age 50 to age 45......
