OT: Colonoscopy Prep

With the first rumblings down there all I can say is…

Unless you have a TV in the bathroom, be sure to bring a book.

Best sleep ever. no nausea/vomiting. wears off quickly once they stop administering it. A good anesthesiologist can taper it so you are awake to watch the very end of your procedure.
Waking up in the middle and watching/feeling him grab the polyp and rip it off was exactly what happened and why I am always going out. I can still feel it on my insides. NO THANK YOU.

Had my first colonoscopy several years ago and before the procedure I was talking with the doc… turns out his boat was a few slips away from mine at our marina. So about a week or two later I run into him at the dock and he apologized for not recognizing me. So I turned my back to him and asked if that helped. Fortunately he had a sense of humor 😅. Next time I see him I’ll ass a question about the vodka 😉

Propofol is the gold standard.

Fentanyl & Versed are the second option, but the fentanyl can give you a lot of nausea and the Versed lingers, both depending on your dose.
I had an endoscopy a year ago. I was nervous about the procedure after watching some videos.. The doctor assured me I would not feel a thing. I asked what the anesthesiologist was using so I could google side effects etc.. the reply was "He will be using what killed Michael Jackson." I knew even though very bizarre he was trying to be funny.
Obviously it was no where near the amount MJ was having administered.
I woke up feeling great. General anesthsia I get sick as a dog, but with this "twilight" no issues.

the amount had less to do with MJ dying than the fact that a cardiologist with no training gave it and not someone trained in giving it. In the state of NJ, only a person trained in anesthesia (MD or Nurse Anesthetist) or a MD who has taken a 2 week training course and passed a test can give it.

Propofol. It causes you to forget anything you might remember during the procedure. Perfect for the job.

Might be too much for a pop superstar using it to forget his interactions with young boys.

Everybody I know says that. The cleansing does make you feel super for a day or two. I insist on Demerol. They typically don't use that anymore but I had a nasty experience my first procedure and I can still remember it and the discomfort. Told him about it prior to next one and that's when he suggested it. Love the stuff. "Goodnight and good morning. How'd it go Doc?"

Propofol will get it done. Same thing. Show up. Get ready. Wake up in bed. Go home. Nothing in between.

you'd be surprised by 2 things:

1. the number of people who want NO sedation and want to be awake for the procedure

2. the number of people who want to be awake to see a little bit of their insides.

Eww,

Last time my wife went, I asked the doctor if he could put a little pesticide on the camera to try to kill the bug thats been up her a** for the last 10 years.

That didn't go over well...

I'm going to steal that one.

I had uncles on both sides of the family pass from colon cancer in their 40’s. As a result my GI doc has me on a 3-5 year plan for the next procedure.

Family history seems important to them.

Family history is very important with colon cancer. With uncle's in both sides having died young from colon cancer your colonoscopy screening should have started in your 30s. The 3-5 year plan is spot on.

As for being a proctologist... yeah, there are aspects of the job that really stink and are quite sh-tty, the job itself is really looking up.

Going in Monday morning for mine. The last time I had it done I nearly hurled trying to suck down all of the prep liquid. This time I have the pills so hopefully that will go better. Pills, water and TP - fun Sunday evening for me.

I’m 42 so likely have this to look forward to in a few years. Out of curiosity, how long after you drink the prep liquid or take the pills does the — uhhh — cleanse take to flush you out?

(IIRC) last time I did it I had to drink like a gallon of water in 8 ounce glasses every 15 mins. Stomach started to gurgle after the 2nd glass and by the 5th or 6th it just runs right thru you. I think you have to pause in the middle for a bit.
Fasting is obviously involved so best to have procedure in morning otherwise you're going close to 24hrs without eating.

It starts pretty soon after . I had prescription for a two pack of some carbonated beverage , it wasn’t that bad actually . The directions said to take one the night before and another like 5 hours before . So this was like 3 am. Basically I was up all night. I probably overdid the prep , but wanted to be 100 percent sure the prep was complete .
baby wipes help !

Wait, what? What's this baby wipe thing? We're supposed to wipe after?

But, but... but then we'd have to wash our hands, too.

After a few go rounds, a baby wipe isn't necessary. A towel, yes, but not a baby wipe...

True. In fact, as the rounds progress, later rounds clean away any remnants of the early rounds. Which is, I guess, the whole point of the escapade.

I had my first colonoscopy on the morning of New Years Eve five years ago. He told me not to drive or drink that day. I promised him I wouldn't drive.

One little small polyp and that was it.

Didn’t even realize I went out as the anesthesiologist must have given me the good stuff… *had them all laughing before the procedure.

Nurse went thru the checklist:

- What’s your birth date?
- You’re here today for a colonoscopy, correct?

* “Colonoscopy?! I’m here to get my knee done!”

Hilarity ensues and I woke up about 20 minutes later.

Prep was fine, procedure was fine, recovery was fine.

Get it done, folks! Nothing to be afraid of, nothing. This coming from a guy who is not a fan of needles (which the anesthesiologist picked up on and commented- lol).

Good move. The prep is the most challenging part of the procedure, and that is improving over time.

The end result is better health and minimizing chance of colon cancer. No one should die of colon cancer if they keep up with colonoscopies.
