I get what your saying to a degree. But you are highlighting aspects of a "system" that had specific aspects, checks/balances etc. NYC is becoming a failed state. The two party system is gone. Traditional Dems are gone too. NYC (among others) has been bucking the federal system. Its being run into the ground by the same lunatics who wrecked Venezuela. The party is over for NYC

I'm saying if the were residents as opposed to non-resident owners they would be a moderating influence.

The bad news continues:

Retail rents plummet across New York City, as America’s glitzy shopping districts turn into ghost towns
  • America’s glitziest and most expensive shopping districts are losing tenants, and rents are in a free fall.
  • “In the U.S., certainly you will see that what was once perceived as a luxury block ... is no longer exclusively luxury,” said Naveen Jaggi, the president of commercial real estate services firm JLL’s Retail Advisory team.
  • Average asking rents along 16 major retail corridors in Manhattan declined for the eleventh consecutive quarter, falling to $688 per square foot in the second quarter, according to CBRE.
  • The drop marked in Manhattan retail rent was the first time since 2011 that prices dropped below $700.

Hope Libs stay there, but, they should move out asap

I know, they go fast and the last one they bid full price and another couple bid $20k more than asking. Where the hell are all the people that are supposed to move out of NJ according to this board? Even during the Great Recession, prices didn’t fall much.
What towns? Bergen County is an interesting place. You can drive through 3 towns in 10 minutes - one is affordable, the next isn't, and the next one has celebrities on an acre+ of land.

Well this is not good news, as it will have an impact on the national economy as well. But coming from the NYT, it basically provides a devastating counterpoint to the rosy scenario "NYC is just fine, thank you" posts earlier in this thread. And people ARE leaving.
How many close in a given year normally? Plenty of small businesses have been going out for a long time anyway, as the big names have been taking over all the country. How many small businesses in other places are going out? Some people are leaving and plenty are still coming. Many of those who left, will be back in the fall or next year.

anyone even remotely gleeful in NYC's problems needs some serious therapy--NYC's failures will be on all our doorsteps

It’s a constant cycle, people loose money on their real estate investment in NYC and some pull up anchor to better things or locations some try to stick it out. People buy and move in at reduced price thinking that everything will turn around and they will make out investment wise , then the mayor of the city lays a turd and the same thing happens, eventually you’ll have a city similar to California and there is no Batman my friends.

The Hudson Valley is interesting. Lot of people moving upstate from NYC. Real estate prices have been pretty stable but the City of Albany has had more shooting deaths in 2020 than the past two years.
