OT: Cooper Flagg says he's returning to Duke next year

The odds are not zero he comes back. But they're close to zero. It's not about the $$s for one season. It's about being able to get out of the "rookie contract" and on to a "max contract" (Certainly likely in Flagg's case) at a younger age, thus ensuring maximum earnings power for more years. And we all know that in today's NBA, the difference of a year or two could literally mean $100 Million pre-tax. How many kids/families, after they really take a hard look at the numbers, are gonna say, "I'll give that up because I like it here in college"? The answer is somewhere between "very few" and "nobody". And I haven't even brought up injury risk, which everyone already knows.

Bad financial decision by Cooper. Must come from money. If Harper or Ace was my kid they are going pro and I love Rutgers. Why come back and risk an injury. It’s not like they are appreciated by the fanbase. They get bashed just like everyone else.

You can make $1-3 million now in college as a star player. If your family needs help that’s more than enough. Also, if you’re really enjoying it, I can understand why someone would stay even if it means you might push back getting out of your rookie deal for one year.

The list of bball players who were injured in college and were locks to be pros is like zero. The cautionary tale is Jason Williams but he was already a pro.

By the time these guys get to a max contract, they’re looking at 100 mil+/year.

I don’t disagree. I understand why they want to get to a max. At the same time, is there really a generational wealth difference between making $750 million vs. $850 million over the course of your career because you stayed in college one extra year?

To be clear — I think all 3 leave this year but NIL has solved the aged old justification that they need to take care of family.

Wouldn't be surprised if Harper comes back, would be if Ace did.

Why wouldn't you be surprised if Harper came back?
Literally nobody in the history of the NBA Draft has returned with a Top 3 projection.
Nobody with even a Top 15 projection has returned.

1 player with just a 1st round projection has recently returned - Kyle Filipowski.
He ended up a 2nd rounder the next year and has some weird catfish thing going on.
It's roundly considered a huge mistake.

Wow. Good for him. I seriously doubt Ace or Harper stay another year, and if so, you can bet it won’t be here.

You have to be pretty silly to come back unless there's a monetary reason and NIL money is not one. Now if his family felt he wasn't mature enough ,that's one thing, but in the case of Harper his Dad has many who would help protect him. He already has Ron's agent standing by at most games.

Unfinished business. And has a real connection to RU. You don't know what personal connections there may be under the surface. Not saying I would bet on it, only that I wouldn't be surprised. Just a gut.

Another year here under Pike is just wasting his time.

Injury risk is bogus argument. They could and have been injured this year.

Catfish?

I know there was a girlfriend

Who would you rather have back if you could only have one.? My pick is Ace. I think he will develop more between this year and next, especially physically.

No Shot that Flagg, Harper or Bailey are back at any college next year. The Money and the allure of playing the best competition in the NBA is the carrot.

Wouldn't any sort of an NIL compensation package for such returning players include an insurance policy against BB-related injuries to cover lost draft $$$?

He'll be returning to Duke on an off day to watch a game next year. No way in hell he's playing another college season.

The rumor is he's getting $6 million in NIL this year. The rookie contract alone pays more than that and he'll also have more endorsement opportunities in the NBA.

I’d be surprised. But you’re absolutely right.

Chances are they will ever get close to NBA max deals. Just going by statistics here. Tons of talent in every draft.

What statistics?

Just a quick look at the top 2021 draft picks - eligible for rookie extensions this past summer.

All Top 5 and 6 of the Top 8 picks got extensions.

3 of the Top 4 picks got a max: 5y/$224m
The rest ranged from 3y/$105m to 5/y$150m.

Remember most on here said Dylan should be taking #1 over Cooper. And that Cooper was a NBA role player -- Andrei Kirilenko level player. Maybe he read this board, and decided he wasn't ready lol

Class of 2021 was a major outlier.

Why risk lowering your almost guaranteed top 5 status?

He’s a year younger, if I recall correctly. Reclassed to enter college earlier.

He’s going to be great though.

It’s not football, but bball players tear ACLs just the same. You can’t pass up that kind of money.
