OT: Don't Look Up

I really enjoyed the movie. The parallel between "don't look up" and "don't test" was excellent. I enjoyed the satire on the NYTimes and morning happy talk shows as well. It kind of hit most of the things that aggravate me these days. And it's funny.

Two other movies to recommend. West Side Story, the remake. I couldn't believe there could be an actress more beautiful than Natalie Wood in the original, but Rachel Zegler comes close and might even be more attractive. Have to watch the original again to compare.

And "Yesterday" was on the other day, so watched it again. Super movie, great premise, funny, a ton of Beatles' songs and a super cameo role by Ed Sheeren.

I talked to driver from Quikrete and he said the issue there is old machinery not being able to keep up with demand.

Anecdotal, and I think it's a very difficult chore to defend Biden at this point, but there is certainly some stuff going on in terms of shortages that goes beyond the president.
Quickcrete is bagged concrete they don't make Central mix, I'm talking the stuff that comes out of Trucks and yards of it.

But if Joe incentivized young people to work in the cement-making biz by guaranteeing health care for them and offering to pay tuition for future schooling, the Ayn Rand wing of the GOP (all the GOP Senators) would cry “communism!” And Joe Manchin would ask the Koch Foundation how he should vote.
There's no product it has nothing to do with a labor shortage. We now import a lot of our cement and apparently, it's sitting on a Cargo ship off LA. This is now affecting the building industry no longer Peloton bikes for Christmas. Also incentives are not the problem. Masonry pays very well, it has to, no one wants to do this sh*t job.

No interest.
I did happen to watch the 1st episode of of the 1st year of Flight Attendant with Kaley Cuocco.
Found it extremely entertaining.

I saw an article saying that there is a labor storage in the US cement/concrete biz which is getting worse because many in the business are older and now retiring. And I do know that Joe got an agreement with the unions so the ports now work 24/7 to reduce the backlog. I’m thinking the lack of current domestic capacity may be forcing the US to import large quantities all while China has been ramping up demand for decades now.
I remember being surprised seeing a story a little while ago explaining that all the Sahara desert sand is
worthless in making cement because the wind has rounded off all the edges on the grains…and that earth is slowly running out of usable sand.

Not much but it’s a better discussion than going back and forth calling people snowflakes.
Since you are not working, you can come over, and we can watch this movie, which is a good summary current times (John Carpenter is a genius and a prophet):

Another Netflix recent release is “Tick Tick Boom” . The story is about Jonathan Larsen who wrote “Rent” and is based around his musical earlier musical of the same title as the movie. Andrew Garfield gives an Oscar worthy performance. Directed by Lin Manuel Miranda. Broadway lovers will get a kick out of the many cameos by some big names from Notables from the musical theater stage.

My neighbor and his family would go to St Phillips church in Clifton for mass each Sunday, which I found curious because he is not exactly religious himself

the only reason he went was to see Rachel sing in the choir, which must have been something when she got solos, even at her early age

as soon as she left the choir, he stopped going

as far as the movie "yesterday", Dvr'd it years ago and watched it many times..... like all movies, some were disappointed in it, I thought it was very good

Somewhat entertaining movie. The political message is ridiculous in its obvious attempt to suggest that global warming/climate change is exactly like seeing a comet hurtling toward earth.

Funny thing is, this film is itself the kind of propaganda they satirize with the phrase "Don't look up". If the viewer buys into the message of the satire they will believe all the science and models and so on regarding climate change are proven and that only by doing what the "experts" tell them to do can "save the planet" from total destruction.

I found it interesting that the film seemed to be taking a shot at Apple CEO Tim Cook. Wouldn't have thought that made sense with satirizing of the political parties they were doing.

Don't look up.

It’s interesting that one side thinks that all the satire is directed at them.

The movie takes satirical jabs at Obama and both Clintons, as well as GWB and Trump. And it takes swipes at liberal media such as the NYT and Morning Joe, not just conservative media. Jokes are made at the expense of quite a few Dems. Pretty much all politicians, media and tech titans are the targets.

The movie is anti-climate change denier. It should only be polarizing to those who don’t believe global warming is real.

I agree it and felt like it was attacking all politicians and the media. I thought it was pretty funny but not spectacular. There are definitely some really funny lines in there and I am a trump supporter and think man made climate change and the solutions being put forth to "solve" it are total BS.

I know they were going after climate change in the movie but you could apply the movie to dozens of issues.

Totally understand the church visits!

Our political division is setting us up for a significant failure of one form or another. We're broken. And I question if it's fixable.

I posted recently in another thread (or two), citing my former neighbor and his WWII exploits as a bomber pilot. My own family contributed mightly to WWII, an uncle in the Pacific (USMC), an uncle in Europe (pilot in Army Air Corp), an uncle in France/Germany (US Army), an uncle in North Africa/Italy (US Army), an uncle in France/Germany (US Army), an uncle in the Pacific (Navy). All representative of "The Greatest Generation," individuals who came together and sacraficed and did what it had to do, no questions asked. We couldn't do that now, I fear. Too much internal strife of our own making. Too much nonsense. We've jumped the shark. So be the threat a meteor, a virus, a world war, I don't think we have it in us to meet that challenge of a total commitment needed to overcome it. Sacrifice is just not part of our national character anymore. We're soft. We're divided. We're disrespectful. I see little evidence of our ability to change. Unfortunately.

I thought it was ok. I watched with my teen daughter and it killed 2 hours. I found it to be satire on both sides of the aisle so I also am surprised that so many think it was aimed at only one side.

Watched with my wife while having a few drinks thought it was decently funny. Guess the key to the humor was the drinks.

Agree with the above quote, we both said that it hits a little too close to home, as we could see both sides of the political spectrum selling out our safety for a chance at more money.

Thought this was pretty good and got a bunch of good laughs in. They seemed to poke fun at just about everyone.

Although I gotta say after it was over it felt scary knowing this movie isn’t far from the truth at all.
