OT: Electric vehicles

“The whole Musk thing just shows how silly we have become politically in this country.” The other side might have some equally compelling examples of how silly things had become that led us here. I won’t derail the thread with them, hopefully you can identify a few. When we realize both sides have become equally silly, we can hopefully meet in the middle. Neither side shows much promise in this regard but fingers crossed
I didn't read the original quote as having a side. In fact, if Im reading it correctly, it's an indictment of both sides, or at least those on those sides who flip-flop Musk as villain or messiah based on his (perhaps perceived) political leanings of the day).

This is fair. But is it also fair to question the optimism around Tesla here based on Politics given the news of sagging sales in China due to competition from BYD as well as 49% drop in Europe.
Absolutely fair to question that and I’ve said I think Musk has gone a bit too far with some of this. I won’t bet against him righting the ship though

This I would absolutely agree with

So the (theoretical) first Chinese automaker to break into the US market after decades is going to put the entire US auto industry out of business? Because throngs of Americans are going to embrace Chinese cars immediately?
Yes. There is a reason we have tariffs of 25% to 100% on Chinese EVs.

My point was both sides are silly at this point. The battle over Musk just highlights the absurdity of it all. The drill baby drill crowd that called EVs jokes and Musk was a wacky climate change guy now can't get enough of Tesla and Musk. The left has also done a 180 on him and now thinks he's a scourge. It's all just bizarre and weird but completely highlights the silliness that politics has morphed into in this country.

We have a neighbor, good dude but wacky. You have to steer clear of political discussions with him as he goes deep into the weeds when politics comes up. He thought I was a fool when I got my EV last year. He just placed and order for a Model 3 last week. His wife, who is hilarious, is openly mocking him over his flip and it's funny. This country has gone loco.

Question for people who actually know this stuff. Daughter away at school, doesn’t drive very far, charging stations on campus, and the idea of no maintenance For her makes a Tesla seem like a logical choice with the deals they are offering. But I’m concerned about the performance. Are they that fast? Last thing I want is to hand over a rocket to a teenager.

Yes, rocket ships. Think Six Flags roller coaster after they buckle you in fast, electric whine and all.

The maintenance free part of the equation is legit. But having access to a charge is a concern. I would look at the chargers app (whether Tesla, Chargepoint or whatever) to see how available it actually is. Sometimes they are packed and it becomes a pain. Also, you don't want to overstay your welcome because you get charged after you're full so you have to managed plugging in, charging to desired level, unplugging and moving at the public chargers. That concern doesn't exist at home obviously.

Had the same concern. I bought an ID4 instead because it’s not a rocket ship and it was a lot cheaper at the time. The only other factor you have to consider is that if the school is far away, it will take you additional time (hrs) to drive it there or back.

Is there not some parental controls or something, where you can moderate acceleration?

Great trade opportunity. Not sure yet it was a great investment opportunity. Need to see what deliveries and sales are for this qtr.

And as @jtung230 mentions above, still way off it's highs, one of the worst S&P performers ytd.

I actually made a few bucks on a short of TSLA. It was pretty predictable TSLA was gonna drop as Musk took PR hits for his various idiotic moves. But equally predictable was a surge after he got an infomercial on the White House lawn.

FWIW there are cheaper EV options if cost is a major driver in your decision making process.

They are that fast, yes. However, it’s almost impossible rollover a Tesla. You can set a speed limit on the car through the app and can track her driving through the app as well. If she’s a responsible person, this could be a great choice. Impressive safety scores on Teslas.

What were the idiot moves?

Usage is up, advertisers are back and people are lining up to buy the debt in secondary. xAi alone is worth twice what he paid for X. Hard to say it’s turned out to be anything but a good acquisition despite all of the noise at the time saying otherwise. I was told X would be offline and Facebook threads would have taken over by now.
Any comment on the xAI buying X at 33 billion? Fastest mark down of 11 billion I ever seen.
