OT: Favorite Pro Wrestlers for the 70's early 80's

Jonathan Peter Gold used to put on great shows in Elizabeth

We always used to get 1st or 2nd row seats

Back then, he was able to get a lot of WWF/AWA talent - I remember meeting the Road Warriors (and Precious Paul) and how nice they were.. All of the wrestlers at the shows would sign autographs and talk to fans

Anybody else go to those shows?

Enough of this basketball nonsense. A group of us after the game were talking about the upcoming Wrestling promotion at the RAC with Mick Foley and with Sgt. Slaughter last year.

Who used to watch this in the late 70's and early 80's? Used to watch after Racing from Rooservelt.

Who is you Top 10 wrestlers? I'm talking the old timers when wrestling was real...lol. Blood, salt thrown in the eyes, sleeper holds.

1.George the Animal Steele: Green tongue, ate the fuzz out of the turnbuckle pad
2. Andre the Giant : 7'4 520 lbs from Grenoble France undefeated for 13 years. Fear of snakes
3. The Grand Wizard of Wrestling: Never wrestled but was a manager for Mr. Fuji, Patt Patterson and The Iron Sheik. Famous for his wrap around sunglasses and colorful turbans.
4. Fabulous Moolah: First woman to wrestle at MSG and first woman WWF Champion. Was in feud with fellow wrestler Wendy Reicter who paired with Cindy Lauper which started the Rock n wrestling connection.
5. Jesse The Body Ventura: Flashy "villain" with the slogan Win if you can, Lose if you must, But always cheat . Was a single wrestle and WWF tag Team Champ with Adrian Adonis. Later became Governor of Minnesota
6.Brutus The Barber Beefcake: Was WWF Tag Team Champ with Greg The Hammer Valentine. After putting his opponent in a sleeper hold he would take hedge shears and cut their hair off.
7.Macho Man Randy Savage : Managed by his real life Elizabeth. Was second in power to Hulk Hogan. Used the slogan Ohhh Yeaa.
8. The Wild Samoans: Managed by Captain Lou Albano these 2 brothers Alpha and Sika wrestled as a tag team. Never spoke during interviews only grunted and known for nose picking and eating raw fish while being interviewed.
9. Mr Fuji / Prof Tanaka: managed by Grand Wizard of Wrestling. Known for throwing salt in opponents eyes
10. Billy Graham Superstar : Flamboyant with colorful capes. Was a villain and lost to "All American:" Bob Backlund. Wanted to be a good guy but Vince McMahon said no.
@herdof3 and I went to Jr. HS with Gorilla Monsoon's son IIRC.

Thx Rock, corrected. Ahh channel 9, also the home of the great Howard Stern Show.....
Benny Hill and Paul Hogan too. Great times to be a kid. Also used to watch Night Stalker, and Chiller Theater religiously. For after school entertainment: The 4:30 Movie.

Loved the Night Stalker.

Baron Miguel Sicluna from the Isle of Malta, SD Jones, Mil Mascaras, Moondogs Spot and Rex. Baron Von Rashke and the brain claw. They would put a red x over the screen and announce that it was censored because the brain claw moved the plates of the skull of the Baron's opponents. Good times. Followed by roller derby on Saturday mornings or Chiller Theater at midnight.

The killer bees, British Bulldogs , Greg "the hammer", the 4 horsemen( ole And arn), the Von Eriks down in Texas , road warriors. Always laughed when a guy would pull a weapon out of his banana hammock throw some powder in a sides face, then the good guy would drop the strap And lose the intercontinental belt

Hated "leapin" Lenny poffo, always got beat by some no name like Steve Lombardi

Every once in a while they would throw in a special event. Midget wrestling with the Haiti Kid.

While he wasn't in my favorite list, Iron Mike sharpe just passed away a couple days ago.

There was one guy who's nickname was The Atlantic City Express, forget his real name.

And of course, GLOW The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.

Y'all forget the true King...Harley Race? Lol...The killer B's B. Brian Blair, and Jumping Jim Brunzell...The ultimate Warrior....Dino Bravo...Nicolai Volkoff...Doink the Clown...aaah the memories...

The Road Warriors, Demolition, the Ultimate Warrior, Macho Man, the Heart Foundation before they became good. I lost interest in Wrestling in the 90's until a friend told me to go to the Freehold Armory with $10 and any weapon I can find (I brought a gutter downspout). That was my first ECW match. The early years of ECW were awesome.

Harley Race was the neighbor I was referring to in my earlier post. Forgot to emotion him by name. A character.

no love for Crazy Luke Graham?

remember Chief Jay won some made up thing like most popular wrestler and Crazy and Captain
Lou busted the trophy over his head..

the Mongols were another part of early Albano stable...

Channel 47 used to have to mess with the antenna to get it to work...the stupid cat logo...

Snuka, the best matches I saw were the steel cage match against Don Moracho and a tag team match with Snuka and Andre against two of the Wild Somoans.

I'll never forget when I was a senior in high school, my brother and I got front row tix for the WWF at Piscataway High's gym. I bought the tix from a young girl in our neighborhood who was a student at Our Lady of Fatima. The event was a fundraiser for the school. She went door-to-door selling the tickets. I couldn't believe it when she said she had first row tix for sale. What a night! The place was packed. Bob Backlund beat Greg "The Hammer" Valentine to retain his WWF title. Never thought I would be watching the future governor of Minnesota -- Jesse "The Body" Ventura -- that night!

03/11/1982 WWF - Piscataway, NJ
Rick McGraw drew Larry Sharpe
Frank Williams drew Steve King
Rick McGraw & Steve Travis def Johnny Rodz & Jose Estrada
Pedro Morales drew Jesse Ventura
Bob Backlund def Greg Valentine

Johnny Rodz and Jose Estrada. Boring matches. They never won.

Anyone remember the referee who got knocked out and his twin brother was brought in by a villain to continue. They eventually had both in the ring and the good guy I think Hulk Hogan had to figure out who was the real ref.

Snuka off the top of the cage against Muraco was indubitably the most memorable wrestling moment ever.

Add Pedro Morales.

Some of you have to help me out here, but about 25 years ago I was in Atlantic City when there was a big wrestlemania-type event. I was in a casino bar with my wife when some guy walks in with a blond babe on one arm and a black girl on the other arm. He's dressed in white: white hat, shirt, jacket, tie, socks and shoes. In seconds he's besieged with autograph hounds. I'm curious so I ask for an autograph but I can't read it. I find out later he's The Hipster, or tipster, or something. He was a manager or something like that. Who was he?

No mention of Gorgeous George in this thread?

Stan "The Man" Stasiak, Eric the Red, Torquemada, Stan Hanson, Dominic Dinucci, Nicolai Volkoff

This thread is awesome. Bringing back some great memories from kidhood with my younger brother. We used to turn on Channel 9 about the time the last harness race at Roosevelt? started. "And they're off!" Couldn't wait for it to be over. Then came wrestling.
When they ran a slow mo replay, they would stop the tape just when the fist or foot was about to "make contact" with someone's head.
One night Vince was so high he could hardly speak. The second announcer had to take over, but Vince kept jumping in slurring his words. Eyes glazed over.
On another night, can't remember the star. But he dropped kicked his no name opponent coming of the ropes. Problem is the no name guy didn't stop running in time, and got hammered in the head for real. He was out before he hit the carpet. Real medics came out to attend to him, then they switched to commercial. Vince and company had "oh $hit" looks on their faces. Anyone else remember it?

THAT'S IT. I was told by others there he was the Slickster.

Slick is permanently etched in my brain, after his "I TOLD YOU, I TOLD YOU, I WAS GONNA GET...A BAM BAM A BIGELOW!!" quip.

Ah yes - Saturday mornings, wrestling, and Ch 9.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned two of my favorite wrestlers, Argentina Appolo, and Bobo Brazile!! Yeh, I'm old!

Johnny Rodz and Jose Estrada. Boring matches. They never won.

Anyone remember the referee who got knocked out and his twin brother was brought in by a villain to continue. They eventually had both in the ring and the good guy I think Hulk Hogan had to figure out who was the real ref.

The most famous ref was Dick Wurly and the time keeper at the bell was Charlie Daniels!

Dick Wurly always got knocked out while SD Jones was about to pin a heel. Then he'd get reversed and Dick would wake up just in time to count SD Jones down.

Coco Beware.

Always like the old foot on the rope trick to get out of a pin. Also the manager distracting the ref just as he was about to pound his hand 3.Animal Steele always had a object in his trunks that he would take out and jab his opponent in the throat.
