Sounds like a lovely couple expecting their first child. Yikes!

FIU's Jonnu Smith out for season after suffering multiple burns
12:48 PM ET

Florida International senior tight end Jonnu Smith is out for the season after his girlfriend reportedly poured boiling water on him, causing burns to multiple parts of his body.

The Miami Herald reported that Mary Gaspar has been charged with aggravated battery. She is five months pregnant with their child.

According to the arrest affidavit obtained by the Herald, Gaspar and Smith argued about how much attention he was giving her last month. She boiled a pot of water in his dorm room and then poured it on him. Still upset, she then started hitting him with her hands.

Smith, a four-year starter, suffered burns on his head, neck, back, shoulder and arm. He ends his career with 175 receptions for 1,936 yards and 17 touchdown catches.

Wharton has second degree burns.:sunglasses:

You can't really throw a woman who is five-months pregnant in jail can you?

A good lawyer will say that she was preparing a cup of tea for him and accidentally spilled the water on him when he tripped her.

She was mad about being ignored, he was ignoring her anger. So she really poured it on.

A burns like that are very serious and very painful. If not taken care of properly in the hospital the wounds can get infected.

I guess im in the minority here but nothing about this is funny to me. And i'm not sure why jokes are being made. Burn wounds never heal without scarring, and if he is burned to the point where his season is over, then he is now horribly disfigured for the rest of his life. And this is on top of having his NFL prospect status wrecked.

Anyone want to tell me how THIS is not Attempted murder??? Not even a Domestic Violence charge??? Of course since its a female, its ok that all she did was go Medea on the football player.

Imagine if it was the other way around??? Dude wouldve been kicked off campus or even have a decent job for the rest of his life.

Each to his own. I find it odd that people can't separate humor from seriousness about things like this.

Those of us making jokes here doesn't mean we approve of what happened. It doesn't mean we're not sympathetic towards the guy. It just means that we deal with all kinds of stuff, including the shit life throws at us, with humor.

I really can't imagine a life without constant laughter. I'm sure I would hate it.

The fact she's pregnant makes this even worse. There goes another child that won't have parents that have a positive relationship. And now the player's entire career and earning potential may be destroyed. This woman may have ruined three lives with her selfishness.

How do you know that they won't get back together ? Time heals all wounds.

I am with the few that see no humor in this at all...it goes to show who doesn't understand these are normal humans.
If it was one of our players then the people who find it funny may understand. Or maybe not, people are desensitized.

the thing is, you're making fun at something bad and very unfortunate that happened to somebody else..not you. and not like the guy tripped going into the end zone or something like that..but a serious injury to a person. That's the difference this time to me my friend.

and I am all for humor and especially sarcasm .. JMHO.

Is a different way of thinking about things, I guess. I joke about moving her furniture around to my mother who is blind from macular degeneration. Years ago, when my dad had cancer eating away at one of his kidneys and was having surgery in early January, we gave him a ginger-bread cookie at Christmas dinner with a kidney shaped hole in it.

My fondest hope is that when my time comes, I go out with a totally inappropriate joke as my final words.

It's just how I live life. It's not that I lack sympathy or empathy; pretty sure my friends (@RU848789, if he's paying attention) would tell you I'm caring, loving, kind and generous. It's just that I use humor to make things, especially horrible things, bearable.

OTOH, I don't deny that I'm all kinds of douche bag. So that might have something to do with it too. :D

They will never admit it, but lots of otherwise normal women have trouble controlling their emotions and need anger managment counseling.

Only mental midgets find humor in a story like this. You can make a joke about something when it happens to you, but I doubt you would find some of the comments above humorous if this had happened to a family member.

This mental midget will take a life filled with laughter over a life spent being outraged, humorless and crying over spilled milk.

Burn marks never go away. Because of past injustices men in the U.S. are being expected to endure disrespect in the workplace, view physical violence by women as a non-punishable crime. Then have men themselves joke about the incident.

Several years ago a Mary Winkler gunned down her husband and only served 1year in prison. She claimed years of DV but there was no history of violence, no hospital reports and no 911 calls. This woman should have been sentenced to a much stiffer sentence but with three young children and 10 women and 2 men on the jury she basically beat a 1st degree murder charge.

Then we wonder how & why Donald Trump won this election.

Saw a picture of her.. She's terrible looking. Ugly face and no body.. If a chick is gonna ruin your life- atleast let her be pretty

Lol happened to singer AL Green while taking a bath his wife poured hot grits on him while he was taking a bath. So let me get this straight, your girl is 5 months pregnant, y'all are arguing because you ain't paying enough attention to her, and while your behind is asleep, she decides to make you the hot dog. Yeah bottom line is that the article didn't say he was visiting the necessary. lol
