OT: Flawed Cuervo ad...

The new Cuervo ad, set in 1972, about the liquor fueling a Rolling Stones tour has been bugging me since I first saw it a week or two ago, as the song played in the ad is "Miss You" which came out in 1978! Do they really think people are that dumb? Lots of other inaccuracies in the ad vs. the reality of that tour, but this was the most egregious. Just wondering if the ad bugged anyone else or if y'all are too blinded by the eye candy to notice. And it's more fun than talking about how much the last two games sucked, lol.

 
Hmmm... ok I was born in 77, and I'm not a huge Stones fan, however I "am" in advertising so I'll take a stab at this, ha. I don't get the impression from watching the ad that they were intent on playing audio that was specific to the date they post. I think the idea was certainly to portray '72 visually, and then support it with audio from a Stones song that is from that era/decade but not that exact year. I just don't think it's totally necessary for the two to correspond precisely... although I DO agree that it would have made more sense to do so.

I commented on Facebook as soon as I saw it. There were plenty of tunes from '72 that would have fit, like 'Happy" from Exile on Main Street. "Miss You" was more the disco/cocaine ethos than tequila fueled romps in the early 70's.
 
The resemblance of the woman in the ad to Candy Loving (Playboy's 25th anniversary Playmate in the 70's) is uncanny.

Hmmm... ok I was born in 77, and I'm not a huge Stones fan, however I "am" in advertising so I'll take a stab at this, ha. I don't get the impression from watching the ad that they were intent on playing audio that was specific to the date they post. I think the idea was certainly to portray '72 visually, and then support it with audio from a Stones song that is from that era/decade but not that exact year. I just don't think it's totally necessary for the two to correspond precisely... although I DO agree that it would have made more sense to do so.
And i'm 63 and worked in the mid 70s disco scene as security/doorman. i agree for most preciseness was not as important as getting an catchy idea stuck in our heads to a younger demo than us. We already know what we like to drink.

I think it is pretty bad, because it is not background music. The people in the plane are all dancing to it, so they are indicating that the song is actually being played on the plane in 1972. If it was just background music, I don't think its technically wrong, but I agree.

Although advertising agencies always show stuff that makes no sense. I think they do it on purpose.

Use of popular music in commercials (and other media properties) is always subject to publishing rights. The Stones catalog through 1971 is owned by ABKCO, founded by the late Allen Klein. Most of the music from '72 onward is owned by BMG, pursuant to an agreement inked by Mick and Keith in 2013.

In making the commercial, it's very likely that BMG was more willing to deal on "Miss You" than ABKCO was re: any of the older hits.

Yeah, this too.

My personal takeaway from this ad, and others like it, is that it's absolutely fabulous that the DISCUS companies (major distillers and distiller holding companies) feel compelled to ramp up their advertising budgets. This is a direct reaction to the market share being captured by the craft industry.
