OT: Gavin Griffith in Portal again

Going to save a poster for getting killed.......taking one for the team

Maybe Pike should give him a 2nd chance. We are going to need scoring now that Ace and Dylan are gone. I think he can be a good shooter and he is 4 stars. Also he will be motivated after 2 disappointing years and I think he will hit the gym hard.
Rutgersal, is that you?

Well . . . he does hit the portal pretty hard.

The kid doesn't have an ounce of aggression/passion in his game. I watched their game against rivals Creighton, and his few minutes were just embarrassing.

A deer in the headlights.

I’m not at all opposed to it. He’s worth a flyer at the end of the bench.

I watched him a couple of times early in the season when he was getting some minutes at Nebraska. He actually looked worse than when he was with us. I particularly remember one play where he got the ball at the foul line extended and the defender ripped the ball from him, he fell like a rag doll and reached for the defender from the floor while on his back and his man went for a layup. Reminded me of those youth scenarios where the coach’s son plays no matter what even though he’s in way over his head. Of course, in this case, the coach’s son is an ok player and rightfully plays over Griffiths. Hard pass on a reunion.

it's an interesting question.

without the RU history: on paper would it make sense if we could get the kid REALLY cheap and see what happens? yeah I think so if: he was the last-kid in and the rest of the transfer class was really strong - and we are taking a flyer on a way-under-performing former 4-star. in that scenario bringing in a kid like him would make tons of sense.

but, in reality, he has the history he has with Rutgers. and right now Pike is under-the-gun. Gavin is a prime example of Pike's many recent mistakes. Based on that I would think the kid is Rutgers cryponite.

Why on earth would you want him even as a bench warmer?

He was a 4 star HS recruit almost entirely based on his physical build and perimeter shooting ability in high school. The 3 point line is closer in high school and there is now two full years of data that say Griffith is a 27.5% collegiate perimeter shooter who was scouted specifically for shooting. The 3 point line is further back in college. You can’t look at his HS data as potentially predictive of anything at this point. As Chop has pointed out many times look how much better Caleb shot the ball as a frosh when the college line was closer in.

Gavin’s overall FG% over 2 seasons is 32.7%. Not only is that awful, but this is supposed to be his strength. He’s horrible at literally everything else. I’d rather have a walk on than add him to the roster even as a practice body.

Wait till you see what we get from the portal .

We need 4 more players from the portal, wait till you see what the last 2 look like.

We already have 9 players. Knight is campaigning for the rest of the staff to agree to make Francis the 10th. That group combined is not costing us more than $2M (whether we take Francis or not).

This means we have over $2M available which guarantees that we have enough money to fill a roster of 12–13 scholarships with all players I’d rather take a chance on than a player with 2 years of data saying he can’t shoot or play D. The fact that he played on major conference teams is meaningless as the bulk of his PT overall has come against mid-majors and in garbage time. As I said, I’d rather give the schollie to a walk on.

fair points.

I am hardly advocating for him - just the opposite. in reality there is NO WAY Pike should consider him based on his RU history alone

in the abstract and in in the scenario I painted (i.e. where Gavin did NOT have his RU history AND we had an otherwise very solid transfer class) - taking a CHEAP flyer on a former 4 star. why not? you can only play so many kids. so if the former 4 star remains on the bench = no harm. but if he somehow blossoms = hidden treasure. but to be clear, again, this is an academic argument under a scenario that doenst exist LOL

His dad whines about PT and how his kid is used. He’d be the last kid to add at the end of the bench anywhere. Gavin should transfer to a low major and hope to compete there.

Not disagreeing at all. I was really talking about a “Gavin type” on paper - but not him specifically. As I said the kid is Rutgers cryponite. Pike would be nuts to consider

To be honest, I want to fill out the end of the roster will the best defensive players we could find. I don’t think we should be aiming for finesse types even as back ups. I wouldn’t want Jaden Jones either.

I hear ya.

I only laughed at the Jaden Jones reference.

Had anyone ever gone back to a school after transferring out?
Jon McDaniel of Elizabeth did it. Transferred to Seton Hall and came back to RU.

Best of Luck,
Groz

He will end up at Penn playing for Fran. And in Rutgers style, Gavin comes in with Penn early in the season and drops 28 points on us, much to the chagrin of posters to this board.
Pikiell should be fired immediately if that happens

GG back to RU?!
And there’s people who are on the side that it should happen or even considering it for longer than 3 seconds?
There’s just no way that’s true.
GG has 99.9% chance of dropping down 1-2 levels. No high major wants him and he/his team would have to be insane to even consider that level if he wants PT in 2025-2026. Somebody said it already, the dude is going to end up at a low level northeast school like I don’t know, Albany, Vermont, Maine (please please go to Maine!!), Fairfield.

When he lands at his 3rd school in 3 years I wish he would repeat his best line ever…. About how he’s never going to transfer, no matter how hard it gets, it’s not who he is.
😂
