OT: Great column about nonstop noise at arenas

He’s a clown
But, but, but... he's such a nice guy!!!!

Agree completely. Total 🤡

And if he's the guy responsible for The Boardwalk then he's also the guy I hold responsible for RU cutting off every other avenue from the Hinterland lots to the stadium so you are forced to walk down the bottleneck that is The Boardwalk. If people like it, that's great. I get little kids liking it and people who come from their caves out of state digging it, but if I think it's a silly clusterF that causes an annoying bottleneck on the way into the game I should be allowed to bypass it without having to feel like I'm breaking the rules and sneaking around.

And before anyone says it, yeah, I did protest with my wallet and dropped season tickets this past season for the first time since '92. Not just because of The Bottleneck, but because of all the article states and more.

Football is awful

Between the non stop music in between every single play at ear piercing levels and the train horn, it's damn near unbearable

Starting to get the feel of an NBA game - which, if you haven't been, is by far the worst of them all

The unbelievably loud music from the stadium has finally made it into the RAC this year and now you cant speak to anyone next to you. Thanks Penn State PJ

Imagine the RAC staff who have to endure the sonic onslaught all season.

If Hobbs wants to build his support across the fanbase at no cost, I suggest the following actions.

- Cancel the synthetic noise pollution.
- Upgrade the profile of the band.
- Rename the band to Sonic Onslaught from Marching Scarlet Knights.
- Improve the cheerleading. Get the coast-to-coast backflips going during breaks in the action. "188 feet" Youtube interviews with the players are great. Let's add 188 feet backflips during the timeouts.

Too funny. "Sonic Onslaught" YES; like a 90s band name.

I LOVEthe band and I LOVE the crowd noise; its more the general feeling of the PA staff seeming to think that EVERY break in action has to have some kind of blaring sound. Keep the OCD PA guy away from the audio button for god's sake. It's almost as bad as the old pro indoor lacrosse league when the music didn't actually stop when the action restarted.

Long time ago we had cheerleaders who would walk on their hands baseline to baseline

I just went to my first college basketball game outside of Rutgers and it was a cookie-cut, boring and ear-splitting experience. I felt bad for the pep band as they were basically not allowed to play with much garbage “music” (insolent noise really) drowning everything.

There are times for playing music during some timeouts that get the student section or crowd in general singing along, but they don't need every second filled with noise. Balance time for that, the band and ad reads. Likewise, the volume can be cut back by 25%... in both cases, just take a little of the fastball.

In terms of the train horn in football, it is brutally loud. For people sitting in the end zone, it is freaking ear splitting and flat out unpleasant. Cut the volume in half and it's plenty loud and gets people amped up for 3rd/4th downs. There's no need to throw a Gavin Wimsatt missile to a receiver 5 yards away.

Sat next to a VA Tech fan at the women’s game this weekend. He had two complaints about the game day- time it took to get into the stadium and the horn

That sucks...you missed a great year.

For football, love the horn and love the music for the most part, especially as I don't like marching bands. No issue with the volume either.

For basketball, I think they have the mix of music and the pep band about right (I like pep bands), plus the cheerleaders do the end-to-end tumbling once a game. I don't like that they've cut down on dance/cheer appearances overall, though (it used to be every media timeout).

Maybe some of you need to take your Metamucil more regularly, so you'd be less cranky, lol.

I think we notice it in football more because the games are longer and there can be many more lengthy stoppages in play - particularly with the Big 10 Network TV breaks. I have no issue with the basketball environment. I think it's a good mix.

I am also thankful that the atmosphere is what it is these days. We all remember many dark days there and the games are now an event that you don't want to miss.

The pregame “music” at the RAC often runs 105-110 decibels. As a scientist are you ok with that?

I doubt it's that loud, as 110 dB is as loud as some rock concerts and there's just no way it's that loud, having been to 1000+ concerts, almost all of which have been much louder than any RU hoops pre-game/game I've ever been to (and I've been to almost every game at home for decades). Also, I love loud music, obviously, so I'm fine with the occasional moderately loud music at the RAC, from a safety perspective, which is far less exposure than a 2 hour continuous concert. Keep in mind those phone dB measurements can be inaccurate, especially on Android devices, which don't have standard hardware (relative to iPhones).

Hit 111 on my app for the LIUgame, 110 for Illinois. Steady between 95 and 105. And this is 15 minutes before the game. I’ve been to many, many concerts and never plugged my ears. Now I do it for parts of the pre-game. It’s stupid loud. Louder than the game volume.
