OT: Greenstein says Kelly ought to go

I'm not a fan of Kelly as a human being(at least from the perception of him) however these fan bases need to relax. Yes they are under performing but he won 10 games last year and was in the NC game two years ago. The idea that every team and coach has to win 10 plus games a year is ludicrous. I also disagree that they end up with 5 wins

Yeah, I know we have our own problems at the moment. Still nice to see bad things happening to bad people.

It's time for Brian Kelly and Notre Dame to go their separate ways

Yeap, I brought this subject up a few weeks ago just after they lost to Duke. I felt his seat had to be getting hot. Then the loss to N.C State. His seat just keeps getting hotter. With only 3 away games this year, he at least needed to make a Bowl to smooth things out which I doubt will happen. I never saw them winning 6 games this year and 5 right now is a stretch. They have Stanford at home this week and are 3 point favorites and the schedule does not get any easier. Don't know if Stanford has their 2 starting cornerbacks back yet, but if they do, I don't see them winning that game. The wheels are starting to come off the Domer truck and with a loss this week (having lost 3 in a row) this truck will need a new motor.

I don't have a problem with Kelly as a coach or recruiter (there was a time I would have loved to have him at RU). I just can't stand his sideline demeanor and the way he publicly throws his players under the bus. I can't honestly remember him ever saying anything was his fault.

If ND gets rid of Kelly they are asking for another decade of football mediocrity. I agree, the guys behavior on the sidelines leaves very little to be desired. As a head coach I think he is borderline genius. JMHO

Notre Dame is currently ranked 66th in the Nation (per CBS sportsline). A far cry from a pre season #10. If he really is a genius he will have his chance to prove it. He will have to figure out how to win 3 to 4 of the remaining games to go bowling. It won't be easy to do that. Here they are. Stanford (ranked #34), Miami (ranked #14), At Navy (ranked #32), Army (ranked #68), VA Tech (ranked #16), At USC (ranked #33. I just can't see him winning 3 or 4 of those games.

he took blame on Saturday. He doesn't think any differently from other coaches...he simply is one of the few to verbalize it.

Part of the problem with being a ND HC is the lazy media consistently rates them higher than they deserve pre season. It creates undeserved expectations and makes almost any loss an upset.

ND is one of those schools that has no worries about money, recruiting or national perception. But, this all comes at a very high price when you need to be in the national championship picture to be considered a success EVERY year!
We all go crazy when a four star recruit commits to RU. At ND, this may well bring derisive comments from the fan base that they lost out on the 5 star guy.
Kelly appears to be a guy that most of us would not want to share a beer with. But, he has proven that he can coach. The real question is can he do it at the highest level of the sport when he is constantly in the spotlight. This is not Cincy.

ND's prior three coaches(who actually coached a game)
Bob Davie: 35-25
Tyrone Willingham: 21-15
Charlie Weiss: 35-27

Kelly: 57-27

How many times you gonna pull the trigger before giving a guy a real chance to grow his program?

Did you see the weather that game was played in? I was thinking RU may have been able to hang with Ohio State or Michigan in that downpour.

Yeap, saw the weather and watched the entire game. N.C. State played on the same field in that same weather and just executed better. No excuses! I still can't see them winning 3 or 4 more games. They dropped 56 spots in the rankings since the preseason polls for a reason. Some people out there must seem to believe they are just not that good. Can they turn it around? Maybe? Let's see how the season plays out. I still say no bowling for the Irish.

They won't fire him unless they have a sure fire guy ready to slid in.

The Charlie Weis doldrums have left a black mark on many ND souls. They know better now.

I was listening to the francesa show and Gary Danielson was on. They mentioned that alums are not happy with the way Kelly acts on the sidelines.

Haven't followed much but if this were last year, he was fired and we had an opening I'd hope we hire him in a heartbeat. Isn't this the same guy who'd kick our butts at Cinci? Notre Dame usually has a tough schedule. They lost to Dook? Dook has improved in the last few years though not a great first half at 3-3 this year.

You can argue that Notre Dame shouldn't lose to them but unless you get into demographics hard to find fault with Dook (as a Carolina grad I can..) University. NC State is 4-1 with an apparently not so good loss to a traditionally decent ECU (Rivalry type game -at least for ECU kind of considered the dregs of schools in NC).

LSU just fired someone 112-32...the trigger happy nature of ADs is impressive!

Executed better? The difference in the game was a blocked punt. Based on the highlights I saw, neither team was able to execute. The weather conditions played a role in determining the outcome of the game.

Sure the weather conditions played a big part in the outcome of that game. In most cases it does! It could be 120 degrees down on the field one game, but both teams have to endure it and the one who makes more plays that day will win it. N.C. State blocked a punt and it was the difference in that game. Give them credit for executing that play in the rain and mud. Notre Dame just did not make enough plays to win. On another day Notre Dame might win that game, but you play the cards that are dealt to you.

Dook, NC State + Michigan State and Texas teams whose season highlights are ... beating an overrated Notre Dame team before dropping off the cloud and reeling into mediocrity. And that might have been the easy half of the schedule. They did beat Syracuse and Nevada, though, so there's that. And Army's coming up, that should be a tough-fought win.

Yes, Army is not going to be an easy win this year (even at home) and they are the lowest ranked team that is left on their schedule. Everyone else is ranked higher than N.D. If they lose to #34 ranked Stanford this week at home, I believe it's over for them. They will have dropped 3 in a row. The wheels will be coming off and South Bend will be irate.
