Apparently New Zealand is voting for a new flag:

All Black? Fern leaf? Voting starts for New Zealand flag

Here are the choices:

And here's the current flag:

According to the video linked - they will have a three week voting period to pick rank those five, then next year the winner will go against the current flag. I suspect current flag will end up winning because there will be enough people who might want a change, but dont want whatever the winner of the first round of voting is

I think the 3rd choice is the best.

That Red Peak is horrible. I can't read the numbers, and it should be called Salmon Peak.

I like the silver fern red white and blue one with the southern cross. I wish Australia would get rid of that union jack as well.

Got my ballot in the mail yesterday!

Geezers are strongly behind keeping current flag under the argument that guys fought and died under it. I don't buy that argument, and I'm not wild about the current flag as it looks too much like the Aussie flag and who would want to be associated with those rat bags?

I actually made a submission on the contest, but was rejected because I did a cut and paste on a silver fern (rather than draw my own), and therefore there were copyright issues. It emphasises the link to UK via stylised Union Jack, the Southern Cross, and the emblamatic silver fern of the All Blacks. Also, black and white are really the "national colors" of New Zealand. Needs a bit of touching up, but I thought it was pretty cool. Of the flags available, I don't like the two with the red stars. I'll probably vote for the koru and then the silver fern. The hot item right now is the "red peak" flag. BTW, colors (on my computer at any rate) aren't as nice as the real ones.

Silver Fern (Black, White and Blue) (Upper Left)

And yes I've seen the Southern Cross.

Upper Middle (Koru) is only if the Maori take over.

Go All Blacks!

Cali,

With regard to pulling out of the Commonwealth, no. We like our association with GB most of the time. As a dual citizen, I'm a loyal subject of the crown!

The flag thing is a somewhat misbegotten effort of our Prime Minister to engage in a feel good activity. He thought it would be a huge hit with the populace. When it was found out that it was going to cost about $20 million or so to have this vote, it got a lot less popular (understand, that's $5 a person, and you could buy a flat white with that).

My guess is that the red peak flag will win the first vote and that the second vote will go 60-40 to keep the old flag. I'll vote for a new flag probably no matter which one it is.

The current one is by far the best. The flags with the fern just look silly.

Of those, I'd go with the silver fern (red white and blue), but I'd just keep their current one over any of those.

Downside of the current one is that it was kind of foisted on us by the Brits and is way too similar to the Aussie flag. I was honestly disappointed with the choices the panel came up with. The red peak one was added by popular demand, and it may well win the first round. If there were a "go back and get better choices" option, I think that would win!

I actually like your design, either in black and white or incorporating some of the colors of the original flag.

That's unfortunate. I don't believe in the Commonwealth. It cheapens otherwise perfectly fine countries.

respect your views very much, but I'm getting to be an old geezer so I'll go with the current flag. Of the alternatives, I prefer the fern/red white & blue, but I think that's just because I'm an American and used to red, white & blue. The black and white fern would be my next choice.

No, just a minority of whiny Kiwi's.
Actually, our right wing Prime Minister thought this would be the "feel good hit of the year" by changing the flag. But Kiwis are above all else, economical, and this vote cost $26 million, and the Kiwis are generally not amused!

Moms Skillethead and I were disappointed with the five options. There were better options in the initial list. Furthermore, three of the choices are variations on a single theme, so not wild about that.

But don't be too upset over being wrong as usual t, because the koru flag did very poorly as you predicted, even though it was the one that Moms Skillethead and I voted for (simply because it was the coolest).

Hey Law Prof,

I'm thinking I'm as old if not older than you! Taught at RU for 29 years and in my 11th here at Otago!

Older kiwis tend toward the current flag, and I'm guessing it will win by a landslide. Three reasons here: 1. tradition and the fact that people fought under that flag (think Gallipoli), 2. the desire to stick it to the PM for spending so much money on this event, 3. the alternative looks like a product logo and is generally kind of "meh."

BUT, there are two good reasons to vote for the new flag. First, the current flag was imposed upon us by the Brits, and not Commonwealth country likes England. Just zero. Second, it's practically identical to the one used by the ratbag Aussies, and it would be good to differentiate from them.

Looks like Moms is voting for the current flag, and I'll be voting for the new one. My prediction is that the current flag wins by about 2 to 1.

Yes, you are probably older than I am. The Gallipoli argument weighs heavily with me; I've read about that campaign and how it was horrible it was for the Anzac troops under incompetent British command. (Kemal Atartuk once remarked that three nations were made at Gallipoli -- Australia, New Zealand and Turkey). Imagine not even landing the Anzac forces on the correct beach!

I did look at the flags, and yes, there is not enough differentiation between N.Z. and the "ratbags." (As I recall my limited history, English colonists of New Zealand were voluntary, whereas Australia was the result of exiling those in English jails.) So maybe I'd vote differently if I were a Kiwi. BTW, one of my law school colleagues is definitely a Kiwi -- accent and all.

Kiwis will tell you the difference between a Kiwi and an Aussie is that the Kiwi family "paid their way" to the antipodes. At the same time, there is an incredibly strong bond between Kiwis and Aussies, forged at Gallipoli, and believe it or not, with the Turks as well. Kiwis always get great treatment in Turkey! Tell your colleague kia ora for me. (key OR uh). Maori version of aloha.

My colleague wishes all of us that at his annual party for Waitangi Day.
