Mike Hopkins, Boeheim's coach in waiting seemed to have had enough of waiting.

He's been hired at Washington. lol cuse

Hopkins finally realized don't want to live here. How soon does that guy money show up?

Good move for him. The Cuse may need a cleaner break from Boeheim whenever he decides to leave anyway. My take from this is that JB intends to coach a few more years.

My guess is Boeheim told him that he probably would NOT be going after next year. Hopkins has had innumerable chances to move on as a head coach but chose to hang on at Syracuse on the promise that he'd replace B. But he must have figured out that B isn't really leaving any time soon. Just a guess.

Syracuse board now trashing Hopkins..say he did them a favor..his recruiting prowess has declined..he is unproven...now they are free to get a big name coach..
Typical Cuse fans...awful..for all Hopkins did for them over the years...

Hopkins is just the latest coach in waiting finding out , sometimes the wait will be forever and he decided not to waste anymore time waiting .
This might be a great indication that Boeheim doesn't plan to step down anytime soon and that his planned retirement in 2018 was set more on quicksand then in stone

Now Syracuse is announcing Boeheim is staying beyond 2017-2018. Wasn't him leaving part of the self-imposed "penalty" for the cheating stuff?

That thread on the 'Cuse board is up to 39+ pages. I couldn't stomach their self-loathing and hate past page 4.

While there are some exceptions, being the coach in waiting generally does not work out. It is probably good for him and also good for Syracuse who can hire a proven winner now after Boeheim leaves Not sure why everyone is celebrating this. I think Syracuse caught a break here. It would be hard to leave up to the former coaches expectations.

Probably trying to hold recruits by now saying Boeheim has agreed to extension beyond 2017-2018. Will it work? Who knows. Why go there when you have a coach on the brink of retiring?

When I was at the ACC Tourney 2 weeks ago, I was speaking with a Cuse fan about Hopkins - who told me that Hopkins did not do well when he was HC last year when Boeheim was suspended - and hence there were worries about Hopkins' ability to succeed - and I'm sure this was a big factor in his decision to finally leave Cuse.

First test for Hopkins will be to see if he can keep 4 top 100 recruits that committed to Romar - however I'm sure Michael Porter (#1 recruit) will go to Mizzou - where I believe his father became an Asst Coach - under Cuonzo Martin.

Congratulations to Coach Hopkins. He certainly has deserved a head coaching job for a long time. With Boeheim and Syracuse announcing a contract extension, this is no surprise at all. Hopkins came to Syracuse from southern California in 1990 and never left. He was an icon and favorite in the Syracuse community, and I think almost everyone will wish him well. I had Syracuse season tickets back then (split with others) and remember him as a player very well. He was slow, couldn't dribble or jump or shoot, but somehow helped the team win with his effort and attitude and coaching on the floor, and he started for two years. He lead the Big East in charges and dives for loose balls, effort, etc.

In the 80s and 90s, there was a constant stream of California players coming to Syracuse including Hopkins, Jason Hart, Steven Thompson, Leron Ellis (transfer from Kentucky), Earl Duncan (later a Rutgers player), Scottie McCorkle and others.

Yes it was. Oh well just goes to show about bad news. Ignore it and sometimes it goes away.

Surprised orange is not here, probably still bothering people on Seton hall site.

Cuse is going to be at a crossroads, I have no clue as to who they would want to go after and who would go
Syracuse still is considered a top tier basketball program with the highest attendance at games .The location hasn't stopped Syracuse from attracting top tier recruits especially from the NY/NJ Metro area.Boeheim wasn't in favor of leaving the Big East because of rivalries which made the league high profile nationwide. In the ACC Syracuse doesn't get as much attention because the league is dominated by Duke and North Carolina when it comes to media attention.

Saw the Subject line and thought this was a misplaced lacrosse thread about the Blue Jays beating the Orange and getting out of town before snow canceled their flight home.

I wish Hopkins the best of luck in Washington. I fully understand how he must have gotten tired of waiting.

Boeheim only cares about Boeheim. I'm sure Hopkins was promised over and over again that Boeheim was retiring after next season. Now it appears Jimmy boy has extended that out to the 2020 season. I don't blame Hopkins at all. He had now more than quadrupled his salary. Good for him because obviously his loyalty to Jimmy B proved futile in the end.

I wouldn't say its a crossroads, Syracuse is a national program, when Boeheim leaves, their will be a national search,we will get a big named coach.

A lot of "big-name" coaches will want no part of trying to replace Jim Boeheim. Don't be so sure they get a major winner whenever he finally pries himself from his chair.

I have my doubts about Syracuse in the ACC. The old Big East days playing Georgetown, Villanova., St. Johns..big city..New York City, Philadelphia, D.C. ...they are gone.
Instead, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech... fine schools I guess, but I don't know? Just don't see it. Now always second or third fiddle to Duke and UNC. Time will tell. Scratch my head about what Syracuse has in common with most these schools.
