OT: How do I cut Belly Fat?

The key to losing weight is expressed in the simple diagram that follows:

do not be this guy --->[banana]
sexytime.gif
<--- but be this guy instead

It's known as the adverse voyeurism constant and is well known as the single most important factor in a healthy weight loss program.

The important thing about exercise is to do something you LIKE to do. I found happiness in mountain biking. Have a great set of trails with lots of uphill in Hartshorne Woods close to my house. I really look forward to my weekend morning rides, especially with the forest changing colors and the occasional deer or fox encounter on the trails. It's nice to get away from everything and focus on 45-60 minutes of riding hard.
So we are like neighbors.

Very much agree on doing something you enjoy. I was sort of big into mtn biking at hartshorne for a bit, but have tapered drastically over the last year+. Now it's hockey, love it.

I lift a little, eat pretty well, but need to cut my boozing. If I could lose 10 lb's(or convert it) I'd be in really good shape.

It was me. I lost 204lbs total.
Lots of protein, fiber, walking, but I did a ton of yoga. Yoga, whole cutting calories and eating protein, will build a lot of lean muscle, which will help melt the fat right off.

Yea, congrats. That is awesome.

I would second yoga. Specifically power yoga. I haven't touched a weight in years and am probably as strong as I have ever been, and much more flexible. It helps my surfing a ton too, which is also great exercise to burn fat while building lean muscle.

Beyond that, it is running, tennis once a week, and the occasional outing on the lax field. Keep it moving and eat right. It ain't rocket science.

I work in Midtown, and great eats like Carmines, Tonys, and Shake Shack have proven to be too tempting. add in juniors cheescake, rootbeer floats and a daily mexican coke and other sodas, and I've added 60 lbs in the past three years. I don't think I look fat overall, but i do have a disproportionately fat belly, if that makes any sense.

I'm trying to lose weight and part of my strategy has been to eat CHOPT salad most days, rather than the aforementioned, while splurging on Fridays. I'm also trying to drink water more than soda, which is a continuing battle. I have also joined the YMCA, and now swim a mile and run a mile every weekday.

are there additional strategies I can use to cut Belly Fat?
Al, what's in your salad? Just because it's a salad doesn't mean it's healthy.

Use weights. I'm back to lifting heavy weights. That burns fat much better than aerobic stuff and the stomach goes away quicker. Hard to believe but true

The Concept2 rowing machine provides a great total body workout. It's the same type of machines used in Crossfit gyms. It breaks the monotony of using elliptical and treadmills. It's akin to doing hundreds of light weight squats/ deadlifts/ rows per workout. A pretty good home model can be purchased for about $900.

Lots of good advice here and the truth is that there are many ways to get there.

As far as dieting I second the concepts of -
1) Lots of meat (mostly chicken and fish)
2) Lots of vegtables (the rawer and greener the better)
3) Minimize added sugar.
4) Eliminate juice only eat whole fruit.
5) Low Glycemic Index foods when not eating green vegetables and meat (this will take care of most carbs that are not fiber)
6) Good fats like those in evoo, nuts etc. You can eat as much as you want without thinking twice.
7) Eliminate or at least minimize artificial sweetners and processed foods.
8) Lots of water
9) Eliminate white bread and limit any bread to multigrain.
10) Eat less.

When it comes to working out you have to decide if you want to be skinny or become an age group athlete. If you want to be an athlete again the biggest thing is working out hard an with purpose. If you go to the gym and you are not sweaty and exhausted when you are done you wasted your time.

Personally my typical week might look like this -
1) 8 mile run done at my half marathon pace.
2) A Kettle bell/core HIIT workout with 32 one minute intervals with 20 seconds rest that includes pushups, sit ups, dips, planks, rows, dead lifts, shoulder presses, pull ups, box jumps etc. (ie hit all major groups)
3) Hill intervals
4) 1 mile swim broken into 100 yard intervals
5) Sports Day (tennis, golf, basketball, soccer)
6) Yoga
7) Active rest day

But it took me over 2 years to get to this point from my come to Jesus moment 30 lbs ago. But it works. Just finished in the top 9% of all men in the Socal Spartan and 3rd in my age group in a recent 5k.

CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) + Coconut Butter + Low Carb Diet - burns belly fat like crazy. You can buy CLA at Rite Aid - Shoprite carries Rohan Marley's Coconut Butter and cut out carbs for 2 weeks - ive done it works great - guys will lose a boat load of weight especially off your waist.

But like anything else you get diminishing returns as you do more cycles as your body adjust's...so make your first bottle count & just eat the CB raw - do a tablespoon raw (tastes like hell) everytime you take a pill - i found GNC brand works well and try and keep carbs low as possible.

You will get good results - initially.

Thx everyone, for all the terrific feedback, which I'm going to incorporate into my daily routine! I'm floored by the response. Thx once again!

Was thinking about starting yoga. Any good tips on picking out a place?
DDP Yoga is a good yoga workout for men. The guy who does it is Diamond Dallas Page, a former pro wrestler from Point Pleasant, NJ. He is a little bit corny, but he has many testimonials on how people's lives changed by following his program. One of the most famous is Jake the Snake, another former pro wrestler.

Another good yoga workout is Bob Harper's yoga workout.

While it is not Yoga, it uses a lot of body weight and plank moves and light dumbells, this workout is outstanding:
50 minutes, and you are drained:

Great machine, and you can do high intensity intervals on it too.

I may have run into on the trails. I remember having a discussion about Scarlet Nation with someone out on the trails. I literally ran into Mike Rice right after he got fired. Hartshorne Woods is like Subway on Easton. Thankfully for me, I don't drink, so cutting booze is not an issue.

I cut into Hartshorne through Claypit Creek from Rumson. Ride up the back hill to the main parking area, and up the two huge hills to the water tower. It is brutal, but I push myself harder each time to ride faster up the hills. The ride down Portland Road and over the Sandy Hook bridge is what I call the reward. The beauty and variety of the river, the woods, the elevation and the ocean/beach cannot be matched, except perhaps in California.

The two most important concepts for me have been...

1. You crave what you eat.
If you eat pizza l, French fries fatty food, etc. you will always want to eat that, even if you eat it just one day a week. If you eat fish, meat, non processed food you will crave that. When I first started I ate as much as I wanted, I just made sure everything was healthy. Eventually I didn't crave unhealthy food anynore. As time went on I cut my intake down. I've recently gone gluten free and am to the point where I no longer crave bread, wheat, pasta

2. The purpose of food is to nourish the body not to provide pleasure. Keeping this frame of mind has helped me tremendously from even wanting to eat bad food and to pig out to the point I couldn't move.

I have gone from 205 to 180 in about 4 months. And having gone gluten free have more energy than ever.

It is ok to enjoy food!

You don't have to 100% cut anything out forever.

Diets do not work long term.

What you have to do is something that you can do for the rest of your life or you will ulimately gain it all back and then some.

I would advise people to eat healthier versions of the foods they like and for the really bad stuff that should be only eaten as a special treat once in a blue moon aka once a month or once every few months or once a year. Even then never pig out.

Moderation is the key.

Also engage in more physical activity. That can be anything that you like. Don't just join a gym unless you love going to the gym. Find out what you like and something that you can do on a regular basis for the rest of your life.

It is all about a lifestyle change a permanent lifestyle change.

Also eat more veggies. They are the only food you can pig out on and not gain weight doing. But only if you EAT them not drink them.

Same with fruit. EAT fruit don't drink them. Eating fruit will not make you gain weight but drinking juice will.

Sugar and Carbs (which turn into sugar) are the enemy. My sugar (150) and cholesterol (230) were high, so my doc suggested cutting out all bread, potatoes and pasta, along with all high sugar and carb foods. In 6 months my sugar was at 110 and cholesterol was at 200 and I dropped 15 lbs. At 1 year I had lost 25 lbs. All this while I ate anything else I wanted in any quantity. I do work out 4-5 days for 45 minute doing 100 sit ups, 100 push ups and 20 minutes on a stair master.

I get the not drinking fruit (its okay when it keeps the fiber like in a ninja or nutribullet, but not in a masticating or centrifugal juicer it is all sugar straight you your system), but why not drink vegetables in addition to eating them?

Reduce sugars and alcohol drastically

This is very accurate. I developed gout in February mostly due to my children buying me an ice cream maker for Christmas which triggered my compulsion to make perfect a new skill. Because I had not completed my goal, I stopped all consumption of alcohol and only consumed sucrose. (While high fructose corn syrup is just as fattening, the fat from this sweetener tends to create more belly fat because of the way it is metabolized. Also, because so many products use HFCS instead of sugar, eliminating it from the diet will reduce sugar intake). I maintained this change in diet after completing my goal in March. Since that time I have lost 3 inches off my waist and have dropped 35 pounds without increasing my exercise regimen.

Would add:

"Hack"cercise. Gamify any activity -- especially necessary/productive ones -- to burn extra calories. Some examples:
  • If you take the train in, park further from the platform (bonus: your car will likely be less exposed to nicks and dings since it's unlikely anyone else will park that far).
  • Instead of taking the nearest subway, walk to the next station and take it from there.
  • Instead of using the dryer, dry them halfway then line hang (bonus: your clothes will actually last longer and be less wrinkled this way)
  • View vacuuming as an exercise. You will burn about 100-150 calories just vacuuming. And your house will be cleaner!
  • If you're watching sports at home, create punishments/rewards (ie: every time opponent scores, 10 push-ups).
  • Every time you go to the bathroom, X push-ups. Put a pull-up bar in the doorway to add variation to the activity. If your g/f or wife doesn't like the look, put it in a secondary bathroom. As an added bonus, you probably have to walk further to it.
Believe that the smallest changes can make a difference. If you did all of the above today, you'd easily burn 500+ calories, have nicer clothes, and a cleaner home. And it cost you nothing.

Stop counting calories, Eat more healthy, organic food and trust your hunger. Eat Grass-Fed versus Grain-fed Meat - Grass Fed meat provides more nutrients and fewer toxins than grain fed meats. MOM was right - EAT more vegetables! Eat Wild Caught Fish rather than Farm Raised Fish.

knightsfan: just curious -- as a percentage, approximately how much do you think you spend more for premium groceries..?

It is 100% ok if you do both just beware of prepackage veggie drinks which are loaded with salt and sugar. But if people who are overweight only drink veggies, that is not going to fill them up and they will end up eating more to make up for it.

The key is to try to not drink too many extra calories, it is the easiest way to add on extra calories and not feel like you added extra calories.

I couldn't tell you, I just started this diet about a month ago and I now shop only at Whole Foods & Trader Joe's. My wife has been away for a month and will be getting back tomorrow, she usually shops at Shop Rite, I never really kept track on what the cost difference in the Food was. I will say, eating healthier and the diet and I work out 3 days a week, I have lost 12 lbs. in the month. I use to way 202 and now I am down to 190, I would like to be at 175 if I can, that's my goal. But eating healthy, I feel like I have more energy, I use to drink a pot of coffee everyday and now I am down to 1 cup of coffee, cut out all sugar, alcohol ( except that glass of wine or scotch once in a while ).

knightsfan: That's awesome. You and I are in the same boat. Over the past year: 201 --> 167 --> 175. Been maintaining (+/- 2lbs) for several months now. Started and stopped a short weight lifting routine which is why I've gone back up. Really hard to fit it in commuting into the city and having a toddler running around.

I count calories & walk 2-3 miles a day. Port Authority to Grand Central is almost exactly 1 mile. Do that to and from along with whatever I feel like during lunch.

Counting calories definitely doesn't work for everyone, but for the obsessive/compulsive analytical type like myself, it's been very effective.

That's great Mike, Keep it up! You have to make a change and keep to the change, I travel a lot and it's difficult to maintain and always eat right and organic and fresh, nothing processed, no grains, I wish I would have learned earlier on in my life, it's never too late to change! Just like I hope our head coach learns not to be stubborn and be more flexible!

To the OP:

Add 1 once of organic coconut oil per day to your day, and you will lose most of your gut in 8 weeks.

It's been seven months and figured I would resurrect the thread.

How has everyone who had been looking to lose weight been doing? I've just reached my initial personal weight loss goal and am making some adjustments and moving forward towards a healthier lifestyle.

Make sure your knife is really sharp?

Can't believe no one else in this sarcastic group came up with this.....

if you are serious about cutting fat and being healthy...reduce the amount of alcohol you drink drastically. Sure you can indulge every so often at a tailgate but you bettter even cut back then because 7 weeks of drinking and eating fattening foods is just going to derail any progress, not to mention you go right into Thankgiving and XMas and now you know why the average RU fan is overweight. You either want to be fat or you dont. If you want to indulge go ahead no one is stopping you but dont plan on generally being healthy and fit

its pretty easy to eat right where it becomes an everyday part of your life and you certainly can eat your faves in moderation but I think people do not understand what moderation means..it doesnt mean every weekend for 20 weeks during football season, that will not cut it if you are TRULY serious

I didn't plan on losing weight but had my physical and Doctor said I was pre diabetes in late Nov before the holidays. I lost 35 pounds about 5 years earlier and gain 15 pounds back over the last 5 years to 207 pounds 5'9. I started my new diet before Thanksgiving and the holidays but just reduced my eating for the holidays. The rest of the diet, which wasn't strict, was oatmeal for breakfast, salad and healthy choice dinner for lunch, and smaller portion for dinner watching for no carbs. After 4 months around March lost 27 pounds to 180, total loss 47 pounds over the 5 years, 32-33 waist. I always ate very small portions after the first diet 5 years ago but I stop eating my bags of potato chips and diet soda and it came off. I just had to be disciplined. Almost no exercising even though I use to jog 1.5 miles a day.

Might go down to 170 but everybody was saying I was getting too skinny but would like to get into 30 waist jeans like HS.
